I first heard Zeitlin on the radio when I was 14 - it was his fantastic version of "Soon" off of his debut recording on Columbia, "Cathexis". I wondered, "who is THIS" - it was so sophisticated and advanced and immediately recognizable as an individual sound. I immediately sought out the record and was blown away when I discovered that he was, while simultaneously working as a jazz pianist, also studying to be a psychiatrist. The guy is obviously Focused (with a capital F).

I enjoyed these observations, which apply to so many areas of life and art: "Working with this capacity for attunement and respect... and being able at times to give up control and at other times take it when it's appropriate. To have that kind of trust, that allows people to express their innermost selves... "

Man, this is awesome. I majored in philosophy and religious studies and always am intriqued by how the convergence of separate discliplines give us a better understanding holistically. Of it could be I'm just living vicariously since I never learned HOW to play an instrument but know HOW to listen to an instrument. :)

thanks so much for this one, Brett! I've been a Zeitlin fan since the 60's,so it's really great to see this. I've seen him a number of times, tho not in recent years.

Playing music, and jazz in particular, has many things in common with a therapy indeed. It enables us to express all our hidden emotions, feelings, and sometimes extract the evil ones... Release the stress, liberate the unspeakeable. Provided you do it with the right sparing partners. Like love in fact.

This guys shows some inspiration for me. I going into a law program next year and I want to be a lawyer. But I want to be a musician and a composer too. If this guy could be a psychiatrist and composer at the same time, I can do both of my dreams. :)

Thank you for doing what you do. This video was intresting for me because I am a medical student and a jazz listener at the same time. Some profound thoughts here. Nicely done!

Interesting - I first heard a Denny Zeitlin record some 25 years ago, but I never knew he was a psychiatrist! I always knew though he was an incredible piano player......

I'm just discovering Denny and Pat Martino very recently this year (what a wonderful year for me musically!) Does anyone know if the two of them have collaborated in some project before? If not, somebody please get this two legends together and have them record an album ASAP! :o
