That implicit laugh at 1:39
Psychologist Dr. Karen Fletcher has a session with Barry about the incident at work in order to bring Dennis' personality forward and talk about Kevin's safety. Dennis claims that Kevin is too weak, and can't realize how powerful they can be.
Dr. Karen doesn't believe that The Beast is his 24th identity and persuades Dennis, that it's just a fantasy.
Clip from the movie Split, starring James McAvoy. His acting is
overwhelming and leaves the audience completely speechless.

I don't think Dennis was pretending to be Barry. In fact, in the switch from Barry to Dennis, which i also loved because of McAvoy´s acting( perhaps one of my favorite acting in a scene of all time), I'm pretty sure that for that brief moment, Kevin became to light ,just before becoming Dennis. You can realize that because of the sadness of his eyes. It makes sense because Dennis is the most protector of all Kevin´s personalities. He is the one that makes him equanimous, and here he manages to reveal himself in order to keep Kevin safe and not exposed.
@brettzforeman
@brettzforeman 5 жыл бұрын
@@mariozavalaaldana88 That sadness - just short of tears - was still Dennis. He was overwhelmed by the doctor's show of sympathy. She knew he would be on guard against her calculations and brittle to being disrespected, so she made a detailed show of understanding his higher motives, suggested his courses of action weren't without reason, and pointed out that neither of them wanted to hurt Kevin. Remember, Dennis lost ALL of the other personalities as allies when he chose to follow Patricia, desiring the protection of the Beast to keep Kevin safe. At this point, Patricia and Hedwig are his only allies and he feels isolated, judged and desperate. He went into the doctor's office hoping to keep the heat off for awhile longer, but was unprepared for her to be three steps ahead of him but welcome him with open arms anyway. This scene sets up his heartbreak over later events. I love it for the iron conviction that sets in when Dennis speaks with his own voice. "They keep calling use the Horde..........the others, you know? Miss Patricia and I, we are *ridiculed.* Now we're not perfect, but....we don't deserve to be ridiculed. We're all struggling, they have to *admit* that." The constant wariness of others' perceptions, of others' mockery. That forceful suggestion of what others *have* to admit. Dennis is terrifying.

@MuffinMcFluffin
@MuffinMcFluffin 5 жыл бұрын
@@colin-campbell It's not just that, not even close. It's his breathing pattern, his eye movement, and overall a radical behavioral transition when he sends nonverbal responses to the things she says. He goes from being choked up to an ultimate sense of composure almost instantaneously, which as anybody knows it's very difficult to conceal sadness evoked through tears. The camera doesn't cut away, which was a very nice touch. While we can't credit McAvoy for the change in the characters' dialogue, we can for the change in his dialect (and outside of the accent he has a completely altered his tone and flow of speech). He does it in a slightly exaggerated caricature sort of way as to differentiate the identities and provide a sort of cinematic presence (if you will), but they are all believable people. It's easy to imitate Trump or something, but it's a completely different task to take on Paul Smethers from Altoona, Iowa. It's the nuances that makes every character stick. I'm seeing the exact same white-skinned, head-buzzed male doing these things, but for some reason when first watching this I never said: "That's somebody doing an impression." Instead, I'm saying: "That's Dennis. ... That's Barry." Things like that. Him being a woman or a child is significantly more noticeable, but this scene would have been demoed for Oscar contention easily. And sure, he does shift his posture and furrow his brow. More than I can do, anyway. I'll take that, on top of the twenty other people he portrayed going into Glass.

Well to be fair to her there's 23 indentities to keep track of and find out about and she clearly has intimate knowledge of their personalities she knew it was Dennis because she noticed his OCD and she clearly knows Barry very well to easily spot it wasn't him. Also we have fore knowledge of what the Dennis and Patricia have done the doctor doesn't she knows the other identities are under stress and she's trying to find out. I think eventually one of them would have told her thats why Dennis went to the appointment as Barry.

"I know you're someone who cares for Kevin. You're not evil to me... You were necessary". I feel like this line describes Dennis perfectly. Keep in mind that Dennis was the first alter that had surfaced in Kevin's head. He had been with him the longest and understood his purpose was to act as Guardian. His OCD was a method to protect Kevin from further abuse by his mother. Dennis cares so much about keeping him safe that he became the second most dangerous alter, behind the beast.

One thing I appreciate about the character of Dr. Flechter is how she treats them (the personalities) with some kind of respect. She knows that Kevin is a patient but she doesn’t see him as ‘crazy’...others in her profession would have suggested he be taken to an asylum, given pills etc, but her compassion (shown with her wiping her tears) enables her to understand him and offer some kind of advice.

He was the protective father figure who killed the terrible mom. The fact that James McAvoy didn't get an Oscar is just criminally heartbreaking because that facial change from Barry to Dennis is just fucking amazing!!! After learning about DID and then coming back to this movie is mind blowing. After understanding you see this movie completely different

James deserved an Oscar he was phenomenal!! DID is a fascinating topic, they done an a couple of episodes covering it in Criminal Minds and it wasn't as good as James McAvoy but it was a brilliant performance. James Van Der Beek played the UnSub with DID and he was pretty accurate too

McAvoy did a beautiful job of this scene, he even portrayed (even if unintentionally) the mild dissociation that can sometimes occur in moments of emotional confusion, it seemed a very visible and gradual switch from Barry to Dennis, and even if it was dennis the whole time, that's even more impressive, a character acting out a different character
@GregJamesMusic

Something you can catch on rewatch - when you see the "real" Barry later on, in the video on Kevin's computer, he's much more subdued than Dennis's impersonation of him. Dr. Fletcher knows the "real" Barry well enough to know that something's wrong, and she knows enough about the other alters to guess what's happened.

The fact when we first saw Barry, it was really not James playing Barry, but James playing Dennis playing Barry. The best part from this scene is without a doubt when Dennis drops the act. His facial features seem to change completely in a matter of seconds, brilliant acting
