I think a video on the psychology of addiction could be a great addition to your channel and the world of KZbin in general. Particular attention to the current opioid epidemic would be great and might help some effected people.

There is a documentary on Netflix called The Witness about the murder of Kitty Genovese made by her brother. It really is about this story of nobody helping and it turns out it isn't true, people did help her, the newspapers really spun this story to sell headlines. It is a brilliant film, heartbreaking but very interesting. Everyone has heard of this story but the documentary really makes you feel that people really aren't that uncaring and you can't believe everything you read in the papers.

emotional abuse was suggested in a comment once, and i was late but said that a video about parental emotional abuse would be amazing because it's not talked about. everyone thinks child abuse is just beating or starving your kids and it's so much more complex than that.

Hey Sara do you know the movie "Die Welle"? It's a german movie, it's about a teacher that wants to show his class that "normal people" would join cults/extreme groups these days. They don't believe him and so he starts an experiment with his class. In the end, his point is proven and it all goes wrong, and the movie has a bitter ending. Very good movie !

There is actually a really interesting documentary on Netflix called Witness that follows Kitty's brother hunting down all the living witnesses to her murder & ends up pretty much debunking the bystander effect by the end. You should definitely give it a watch!
@ghosties4502
@ghosties4502 7 жыл бұрын
Gabrielle It doesn't "debunk" the bystander effect - that is a very real phenomena. But it does debunk the myth around Kitty's murder. The original story of the event is super shocking and extreme so it's commonly used in psych textbooks, but hopefully that will change after the new information. But the bystander effect is very real, which is why in any CPR or safety training you are always told now to point directly to a person and tell them to call for help.

I thought about the bystander effect this week. my. boyfriend heard a woman screaming outside at 2:30am like bloody murder screaming and she kept screamig and it looked like she was being beaten and chased. so he told me to call 911 so I did. I don't know what happened but the police came and drew their guns and stuff and they took the people away. well, anyway, I was thinking about what if they were just playing or something and I fucked up by calling the police? but then I thought, well that's better than a woman being murdered and NOBODY DOING ANYTHING. so regardless of what was happening I did the right thing.
@ala4935
@ala4935 7 жыл бұрын
N E i was in a similar but slightly less dramatic situation. this couple was fighting ON my front porch for some reason. the woman was literally pushing the guy into my wall and i called 911. i don't know if anyone else saw or cared, and the element of female and male domestic abuse is so downplayed that i knew i had to make sure something was done about it.

These are great videos, and I think that they're a really effective way of getting people interested in psychology! I do take a bit of issue with what was said at 8:25 though. While all of these concepts and phenomena do tend to be true for the majority of individuals, it should be noted that not everyone is susceptible, or equally susceptible to any of the effects. Since the majority of analyses in psychology research are done with an array of null hypothesis significance testing techniques, there's necessarily a big flaw associated with the results (which researchers tend to just be okay with). They're largely based off of an assumption of a normal distribution/bell curve, so there are individuals that exist in the extremes for a given independent variable ("susceptibility", for example) - so there are individuals that are HIGHLY susceptible, and there are individuals that are not susceptible in the slightest. However, since these analyses are done using samples of a population, that type of distribution or gradation may not be present in the sample. While of course, Sarah didn't expressly say "these are true for every single individual", I think that stating "...and even if you say that you do [like being an outcast], you probably don't..." is a little misleading and presumptive. People are, by their very nature, extremely different and diverse, and can exhibit different traits at varying levels. So saying something like "this tends to be true for the majority of people" can still get across the same point while being mindful of the flaws associated with null hypothesis testing. This is not meant to discredit or otherwise be reductionist towards these videos, because I think they're an absolutely wonderful tool for people that might be interested in pursuing Psychology, and they're really well done. :) As a background, I was a Psych major, with a minor in Statistics, and I'm currently a PhD student in I/O Psych doing research in diversity.

In my class they said that the bystander effect is one of the most re-created experiments and one of the most "proven" phenomenon out there. Which I think is kind of scary, to think that it's almost a fact that the more people there are, the less would help you. But ever since I've learned about this I always choose the emptier compartement when I go on a train. :)

Did a test in my high school. Class of about 15-20, one person was picked to be a "bully" and another a "victim" but only they knew who was who. The teacher in charge told us to all walk around in a circle together and the bully to pick on the victim. We (the students) didn't do anything to help the victim (I didn't even realize who was the bully). Although one of the teachers who was in the circle, and only got the same instruction as the rest of us, did step in and stop the bully. It lasted for about a minute, him acting in about 20 seconds The teacher running it said he has seen it go on for minutes with no one doing anything.

I'm a psych major and I'm not the most intelligent person ever but I consider myself to be pretty smart. I was drawn into a Christian cult at the age of 14 and recently left at 27. There were a lot of intelligent people there. Unfortunately all misguided. Everyone is at risk of joining a cult not just unintelligent people because cults specialize in manipulation, mind control, and prey on your weaknesses. Every one is susceptible to it.
