What role does Psychology play when it comes to dealing with challenges from an Islamic perspective? We had the pleasure of interviewing Haleh Banani. She has a Masters of Clinical Psychology with 20 years of experience within the field of Islam and Psychology. She is also the host of her own TV show, “With Haleh” which combines principles of psychology and Islam to help people reach their potential.

At about 3:26 you ask a very helpful question: What is the the Islamic basis that Ms. Banani brings to the table when addressing issues? In responding to this, I like how she invokes aqidah and fiqh, explaining it is important to understand one's obligations within Islam, but she doesn't get bogged down defining and explaining these. Rather, she focuses on her area of expertise and urges one to find inspiration in the principles of Islam. "To live and love for a higher purpose." Mashallah. Thank you. It's easy to just hear the words of this interview, but seems very worthwile to reflect on this idea of giving ourselves over to relationship as a path to understanding Love in the highest sense. ... While many of the examples in this video suggest clients in crisis, I don't think we need to be in a difficult psychological state to benefit from what Ms. Banani points towards.

Very interesting I must admit. The methodologies I have found in counselling is that if you come across an event in your life, you'll get counselled or treated for it by either forgetting/removing it or 'overcoming' it. It does not become about accepting it and/or learning from it. So the fact that you can even learn something from abuse you may have experienced brings more meaning into one's life. This sort of psychology can teach you that your life is more meaningful than you think. I am glad there are people in the psychology field thinking this way, thank you.

Astaghfirullah, forgive me if I say anything wrong. "Then ask those who possess the Message if you do not know." [Al-Qu'ran 21:7 and 16:43] I think even though in first instance and original context, this refers to the people who possess the knowledge of the book of Allah (swt) But in modern day, it can also point at people who, by applying the book of Allah (swt) and the sunnah of the Prophet (saws) in modern knowledge about the human psyche, can help you understand more about yourself and your struggles. Offcourse it is Allah (swt) who gives tranquillity, just as He (swt) provides for everything in our lives, but that does not mean that we should not look or do an effort in finding what we need. Couldn't it be that Allah (swt) is helping the Ummah by giving this people the knowledge to help others in finding peace? Just as when you have a headache and take medication to help it, it will be Allah (swt) that decides if it will cure you, but you still need to take the medication...

felix the Cat this type of psychology actually leaves out the bad parts of western psychology. so if the theory or type of therapy doesn't agree with Quran or sunnah it is not used. like for example Freud believes the ego id and super ego controls us. we as muslims know this is untrue Freud also believes we are sexually driven which also goes against the teachings of the Quran so we learn about these theories but don't apply them because it is not what Allah teaches us to be true.

Thana Aquilah dear there's no halal or haram psychology and im telling you this as a muslim psychologist when you're a psychologist ,when working,you have to get rid of every religious and ideological judgement when dealing with scientific researches ,theories or working with a clinical case so you can understand people in the best way possible if you're a psychologist that lets religion interfere with your profession then you should just find another job and no there's no "oh a new theory?let me check this in my book of faith" thing in this kind of field

so when counselling a Muslim client do you include our Deen? maybe i worded this wrong. its more so learning what theories or parts of theories disagree with Islamic teachings. in order to address the whole Muslim you can't leave out Islam or you are denying them the connection with our creator. like she said if the Muslim is depressed what does their deen look like? do you have cognitive dissonance when you aren't properly worshipping Allah? i know i do. its not the blatant denial of the work that has been done it is understanding how that fits in with Quran and Sunnah. i learn all of the secular knowledge but i understand the way it fits in regards to our religion

"so when counselling a Muslim client do you include our Deen?"no also in psychological consueling the client is the one that is active and not the opposite, like alot of people tend to believe , what is intresting is the subjective point of view of the client you may guide him to interpret what he's going through but not interpet at his place or answer in his place..if the client is in a quest of spirituality and he have to find ansewrs you may guide him to that in an objective sense and not in a sense of an islamic scholar as you said it's a very secular field which changes your whole way of dealing with people in work or outside the workplace. PS:im talking about the whole field in general and basics of its deonthology code when working with all kinds of people

Message to Anouar M It's now 20200508 and I've only now found your comment. Let's not quibble about disease verses disorder. So are you saying (or implying) that if a billion + people say they believe in Allah that it means they believe in an imaginary Allah. Or are you saying that 1 billion + people know (as a fact) that Allah exists? Because KNOWLEDGE is personal, while knowledge in books is only a recording of someone else's claim to possess knowledge - this means only one THING. That Allah remains IMAGINARY. But you say if it is a fact that a billion + people believe in an imaginary Allah then Allah must exist in REALITY because of the numbers? So when Muhammad only had 100 followers, Allah didn't exist. Yet I can say in reply that a Billion + people (alive today) believe Allah is imaginary and that MEANS Allah is not detectable in Reality. This FACT also applies to fairies at the bottom of my garden. Anything that is postulated as possibly existing in REALITY that can not be detected has to be assumed does not exist. In other words, no judgement can be made one way or the other. I can eat an apple in my hand but I can not eat a magical apple that I also can not see. Do I need to believe the magical apple anyway exists? Yes. IF I WERE DESPIRATE. Or if I were deluded and believing in magical apples because they were a part of my delusion. Magical pears don't form a part of my delusion because I haven't got around to include them, or my delusion excludes thinking about pears. I would put that down to the fact that our BRAINS are not infinite in capacity. So delusions have to have a limit. That doesn't mean you can not include pears. I would never try to suppress your delusions. You are free to think. And not think. And probably because there is no way for me to control what you think. And say. But I expect I'm not free under Islam.

The Messiah (as) was speaking to a people who were astray and in a time of confusion concerning the faith. It was through him that people were led back to knowing Allah, the tenants of faith, and having hope in His Compassion and Mercy by implementing that goodness to others. Overtime, the people of the book lost that way again. Allah then sent His last and final Prophet and Messenger (Muhammad [saws]) into the world, as a mercy, with the Qur’an to all peoples to show them the way to salvation. We Muslims are taught to not make rivals of the prophets as they were all upon the same mission.

Being worried and/or anxious is not a difficult problem to deal with. So what this discussion is about is religion and preaching. They are not talking about psychological diseases. Therefore this video in not about psychology and Islam It is only about Islam, Yes, of course a delusional person can be treated with delusion. And so can anyone who wants to believe in Allah, which is a delusion, can be convinced Allah exists. That's because doing so is the easy way out. The hard way is to face reality. Acceptance of your Reality, the World you were born into, who your parents are and the society in which you live, are all a part of your Reality. And if you suffer a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, hyper religiosity is a typical symptom of that disease. While praying to an imaginary God/Allah 17 times a day is simply a symptom of brainwashing that starts as a child. But even when we open Pandora's box and all the Evil of the World escapes, in the box there is still HOPE. I find HOPE in the fact that despite the many forms of religious brainwashing that afflict a large percentage of the 7 billion people alive today, very few can be brainwashed to the point that they wil jump from a high building or cliff to certain death, with a faith in god/Allah so strong they are prepared to believe god/Allah will save them, and not let them die. But people can be persuaded to kill in the name of God/Allah.
@anouarm8891

A delusion is classifying a religion that is followed by a billion people as a delusion, and another delusion is having made up your mind about life and "reality" based on very shallow ideas that you have blindly accepted because they are more suitable for your own personal life, without even having a single clue or doing any research on the matter. At least do a bit of research before calling people delusional, you don't even know how many times muslims pray a day, and it's not called a "psychological disease" it's called a mental disorder. At least go read a quran translation so you would be more knowledgeable of the subject, and see at the islamic prespective, and have an idea about what a billion other people think, If you're really into reality and have intellectual integrity.
