Psychopath vs Sociopath - What's The Difference?

Did you know that there’s a difference between a psychopath and a sociopath? Both psychopathy and sociopathy are classified as antisocial personality disorders, and these terms are often being used interchangeably. However, they are not the exact same mental illness.
While psychopaths and sociopaths share many similar characteristics, there are number of traits that manifest in different ways. When it comes to understanding the psychology of a psychopath vs sociopath, it’s important to look at the dissimilarities between their brains, conscience, emotional stability, social interactions, relationships and criminal tendencies.

Depends. Empathy is useful for knowing what others are thinking and feeling. How you might use that information is more of an indicator as to whether you're a potential conqueror. All a psychopath is, is a person less able to process information and acting based on the data they have. If you can be empathic and yet not care, that's where you get human monsters. Or surgeons.

I can tell you that many years ago I accused my wife of being a sociopath, I was wrong, however. It would later turn out she is an aspie - or even a high-functioning autist. I was mistaking what I saw as a total absence of empathy. Aspies and autists feel excessive amounts of empathy, yet often have difficulty expressing it appropriately. They, too, have to observe and imitate 'human behaviors' and too frequently are left feeling like social outcasts....which is a tragedy. They are far from disabled. They are extra-abled. As for myself, I always displayed superficial charm. (I didn't know that until recently) and although very likeable, super-sociable, genuinely affable and extremely empathetic...believe it or not, I was professionally diagnosed as possessing a psychopathic personality. Yeah psychopaths are more likely to have a higher kill count. Mostly because sociopaths want to hurt people around them. If both let’s say were to be murders the sociopath would kill family and friends while the psychopath goes around and just does it with anyone that won’t grow enough attention. Statistically you are more likely to be killed by family and friend than by strangers and that’s why psychopaths are so good at it and some never even get caught. Sociopaths want to kill the people that hurt them the most. It’s sad because people always describe sociopaths worse than psychopaths but sociopaths mostly get the way they are by having a serious abuse history from parents while psychopaths are born to just be like that. As a person with asperger's, I've always struggled maintaining eye contact with others, but I have tried to work on it. Much like those on the spectrum, people with psychopathy will not initially make eye contact but they are able to learn these behaviours and can effortlessly appear quite "normal" by making a good level of eye contact. It doesn't feel natural to them, either, but they are able to mimic the behaviours of the general population and blend in easily. This frightens the shit out of me. No amount of practice will get me to perfect this, but it shows how psychopaths can be like chameleons and blend into their surroundings.

As a 16 with a diagnosis of major depression and anxiety, one of the most concerning is that I’m also seen to have psychopathic traits. I can’t really be diagnosed with anything like ASPD since I need to at least be age 18. But what more is how people immediately assume we can’t try to live normally. This has very informative.. I had been with someone for a couple of years, eventually finding out that he ticked all the traits of a psychopath! I went thru hell physically and emotionally. This vid is good as I couldn't work out at the time if he was sociopath or the former. Thank you for giving me further clarification. Please keep these signs in mind when meeting someone new. It's not worth going through hell.

Although sociopaths are able to maintain a relationship, it may be an unhealthy one. Thus, bad break-ups are more towards psychopaths because it’s so ONE-SIDED. If a sociopath were to end a relationship, the feelings would be mutual with their partner and the breakup won’t feel as bad or sad.
