Trent has chosen to keep his life more private. But today he opens up about his experience being hard of hearing and getting the cochlear implant. We were surprised to find out that once you get the cochlear implant it can take months and sometimes years to learn how to hear! But it is definitely worth the hard work if you want to do it. Trent loves his cochlear implants and this is his story! :) From now on I will make sure all of my videos have closed captions. It might take 24 hours or so to process after I upload, but I assure you that I am paying to have all of my videos captioned properly from now on. Thanks for watching!

I've noticed a lot of hearing individuals aren't aware of this. I've been told that it's normal for hearing people to speak louder instead of clearer and also clearer doesn't mean slowerer. just more ununciated. not slower. not louder. it's actually relatively rude to those who are hard of hearing or deaf.

Yes! I’m HH (deaf in right ear) and although I wasn’t taught to read lips, I naturally do it to make sure I know what someone is saying. And to add to that, looking at someone when you’re talking is really important. Specially for individuals like myself.

There's a couple that come into my restaurant a couple times a month. The rest of my co-workers get pissed off with them and have me server them. I love serving this couple. They point to what they want and write down like "no tomato's" or any special request they have. I once looked up "how is your food" and "have a great day" to sign to them. They smiled so much cause they were happy a hearing person was willing to take the time and communicate with them in their own language. She even helped me fix the words that I had messed up. And (not that it was the reason I did it) she gave me a tip double the check amount. She wrote "thank you for trying, it makes me feel so welcome. You're a good person". Im starting asl courses at community college next semester and couldn't be more excited

My mom, dad, brothers and sisters are deaf. I am the only hearing child in my family. My twin brothers Oskar and Oliver are profoundly deaf, my big brother Carson has cochlear implants. My twin sisters are both severely deaf and are mute. My other 2 sisters are also mute. I have one more adopted brother who is a mute. My mom is profoundly deaf and my dad is also mute. When they found out I wasn’t deaf they were really confused. After 7 deaf children, they were shocked! I choose not to speak when I’m home. I don’t have friends over because it can intimidate my siblings, and it can frustrate my parents. No-one really understands what I’m going through, at home. I have another new baby sister, she’s in the process of her hearing tests. My mom is sure that she is hearing, so that is good for me. I know how he’s your brother and you obviously have to care for him but the way you treat him is so sweet! Go Trent, you’re awesome!

I'm in Australia so theres probably a time difference as a nurse I have spoken to a few people like you and there are ways to help you, it's not your fault you were born able to hear honey. If you don't want to contact me you could talk to an audiologist who may give you some suggestions about how you need your friends over and would like to tell your family you are not trying to hurt their feelings in anyway. I'm deaf with a cochlear implant too, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you will be captioning your videos! I feel like I miss out on so many good videos because youtube massacres captioning when a person talks fast or when multiple people are talking. I love that Trent talked about his experiences in your video, and hope to see more of him in the future! :)
@KatzWorldOfficial
@KatzWorldOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Accidentally Abby what you can do as well is try slowing the playback on the video I do that for the captions cause at night I can't have nothing loud so I watch KZbin and Netflix on a slower playback so I can catch up with the captions and I read fast
@emoliver80
@emoliver80 6 жыл бұрын
I can't even imagine how frustrating and discouraging that must be at times. When you mentioned " or when multiple people talk" I realized that vlogs must be especially difficult to watch bc there's typically families and groups of friends etc that are all talking and people in the background talking that you aren't seeing on screen, which means you also aren't able to read lips. So if captioning isn't picking it up properly you *really* won't know what's going on. Wow, things I never thought about. I wonder why more deaf/hard of hearing people aren't complaining about this though?! I don't think I've ever seen or heard any complaints anywhere. Thanks for opening my eyes to something that's never crossed my mind.

My father got the cochlear implants as well when he lost his hearing, and he said the same thing about how different the sound starts off weird. He kept saying we all sounded like robots until his brain could adjust better to the new input. He had so many appointments to have everything adjusted for it to work for him properly, and it still needs adjusting over time. He's the same as well with having a really hard time unless he can see people's lips moving to connect the visual with the sound. Waitresses have given him a hard time weirdly enough and will instead talk to me to have me rely it which is weird cuz I speak the same as anyone else. It was great to see they have had similar experiences with the cochlear implants.

It would be more widely taught if it were more common. There is an island where so many people are deaf that sign language is a main language. But in America, for example, it's much more necessary to teach students Spanish now because it has more Spanish speaking people than Mexico now. But I see what you mean.

I can speak English and German pretty fluently and growing up in California we speak a lot of Spanish but I always mess up and throw in some random German word for some reason and idk why but it keeps me from fully learning Spanish. I know a few words in ASL but I find that I do the same thing there. I'll literally say something and then some freaking German word pops up and for a split second I think "I don't know how to sign that" and THEN I realize it's because it's German. Lol even my German is slipping now, too. Lol But I'll alway do my best to communicate with anyone, even if it means bringing up a clear text note on my phone to type it out or bringing up a translator (I understand Spanish so it can be spoken to me but I'm not sure what words are correct so Google translate has helped me have a lot of great conversations) ❤️

I work in fast food and yesterday I had two different deaf people come in and they were able to order by either writing their order down or pointing at things. When they were done ordering they would say thank you in sign language, and it made me upset that I didn't know how to say "you're welcome" or "have a nice day." After seeing this video I'm definitely going to make an effort to at least learn some basic signs so I can better communicate with people that are hard of hearing.

I worked at Whataburger (fast-food burger place) and I always encountered the same thing. My brother is partially deaf so I knew how to say "thank you" and "you're welcome" but since I was barely learning at the time, it was frustrating to me not to be able to say more than just that. They usually just wrote down their order for me thought, I think they were used to it.

I second that there really isn't a way to say " you're welcome" in asl but there are many free resources to learn. I work with special needs children and use ASL very often in my classrooms. It's fun to incorporate into your life and can make communication easier in crowded or loud rooms too for those of us that are hearing. It has so many benefits I could go on forever xD but yeah! Learn to sign!

I relate to this a lot. My mom is hard of hearing as well. She lost 75% hearing in one ear and 65% hearing in the other. She lost her hearing due to an allergy from medicine. (i forget what exactly) But im always patient and repeat things more clearly when she asks me what ive said. She reads lips so whenever somebody talks to her, they have to look at her. Shes tried hearing aids when she was young, but it hurt her ears, it just really didnt work well. but one of my best friends are also hard of hearing in both ears and he has a hearing aid. So this video hits close to home, and i absolutely love this. i dont think Colleen would see this comment but thanks for this video. Some people can be so rude and take advantage of people hard of hearing, and who are deaf.

I’m a year late but who cares. One of my best friends, Willow, is deaf. She’s teaching me and another friend sign so we can talk to each other. But she has like a hearing aide and mic thing that each teacher can wear (wear the mic) so she can hear. Our school started an ASL (American Sign Language) club so more people can learn sign. Our school is becoming extremely accepting of deaf, blind, and mute kids. It’s amazing seeing this story and knowing my friends story and it’s just awesome seeing so many more things about deaf people! (and blind and mute and more!)

I know this isn’t the same but I watched a show called switched at birth and one of the girls was deaf along with most of her friends and their families. This made me really interested in deaf people because I think that it is amazing how bearing and deaf people can communicate so well. There are so many people that go through the same thing and I think it is so cool how there is a whole deaf community and I actually started to learn some sign language in case I ever met someone who couldn’t hear so I do understand some sign language mostly just picking it up from watching the show for so long! :))

My mum is deaf in both ears and has been since 18 months old. Even with a hearing aid in the left ear that she still has small amount of hearing ability left in, she still can’t hear the like rest of us can, just tones of sound. My nana never had my mum learn sign language but recently she got her diploma In Auslan (Australian sign language) I’ve been taking classes too and am close to fluent so I can communicate with her better. Having a hearing aid can be stressful because it’s not the same as having natural hearing. It’s artificial and you can’t block out nosies or focus in on certain noises like hearing people can, it’s just everything at the same time. Very stressful. I love my mum so much and feel blessed to have her in my life and be able to be on this journey with her.

I was born deaf but then later on I started hearing in one ear because idk I was too little to remember but my mom tells me I had to go through some surgery. anyways, it sucks. Not that I'm deaf. But that people are always judging you and thinking that you can't do anything, but really is deaf people are as normal as anyone who can hear. but for me if you want to know how it feels, it's like more of a whisper ..And then sometimes in the middle of a sentence that somebody is speaking it sounds like their not saying anything at all. but honestly I'm very happy with myself and my life. I hope to become a journalist one day:)) and ik I will get there 💗💗 but trent, you're honestly a huge inspiration to me. Thank you for posting this. It made my day to know that somebody actually understands. ❤

I can't imagine what Trent has been through in his life! Seeing his face light up talking about hearing the Mario music for the first time really shows that this is real because that's what he enjoys. He can't even hear The Hug Song! It gives me chills everytime I hear it. Trent and the rest of your family has been strong during this whole situation. Thank you for making this video.

The hug song is amazing! i'm hard of hearing as well, i wear hearing aids and can hear for the most part, but without them i'd be hopeless aha. I understand when Trent says that he cant understand what is being said, he means that no matter how loud, phrases or words just don't process inside our head, the reason we lip-read is to piece together information we may have missed, and our brain goes through this process of picking suitable words until it matches (and hope for the best... doesn't always work, hence why we may be slow when responding if we ask to repeat yourself) so when i listen to new songs on the radio, i hear the beat and the tune as well as the singer, but the words just don't process as words... if that makes sense? (typically why we need lyrics or subtitles for certain things) hope i can help others with this response :) sorry if you thought i came across as correcting you, but i just thought i should clarify what he meant by not understanding it :) (who knows maybe he was making a joke about the song being random )

My husband is hard of hearing, and I wear glasses. When we first started dating we spent a lot of time in the car, and I was usually unfamiliar with the areas we were driving in. He had to give me directions and we would laugh because it sounded something like this: Him: Turn right up there Me: At the light? Him: What? Me: At the light? Turn at the light? Him: No before the light, right up here... Me: Where? Him: What?? You missed the turn...
