There are plenty groups that are actively trying to kill US soldiers in the middle East which is where most of our combat deployments are. (Almost) everyone pulls guard at some point. The bases get shot at. Landmines exist. You can get ambushed driving to the local town, or drive over a landmine, etc. Few people will get out of doing that in active duty, and most people don't want out of it anyway. It's good pay and there's a big culture surrounding it in the military...you're not a real soldier till you deploy kinda thing (which isn't necessarily true, but it's how a lot of people feel)
