not sure if anyone commented this yet but the song essentially shows appreciation to her brother finneas, who is the man sitting beside her, and has been her co-writer and producer since the beginning of her career. the lyrics 'I had a dream I got everything I wanted' references a dream billie had in which she jumped off the golden gate bridge and her loved ones in the dream were unfazed, glad she was gone (a thought of hers that we see recurring in her documentary too, where she gets frustrated and emotional over the fact that her friends and loved ones at home 'stop missing' her when she goes on tour and feels as though they stop caring for her when she leaves). after waking from this nightmare, her brother, her supporter since day 1, consoles her; 'as long as I'm here no one can hurt you', 'they don't deserve you'.. etc. the music video is also packed with metaphors and symbolism, most of which you picked up on. underrated and incredibly talented, finneas also has a lot of heartbreaking songs that would make for good reactions. 'I lost a friend', 'only a lifetime', 'love is pain' and 'break my heart again' make me emotional every time I hear them. also to note that both finneas and billie are very pro-therapy and encourage people to seek help if they have the means, which I think is a very important message to convey to their audiences.

This song is about a dream Billie had where she killed herself (“stepped off the Golden [Gate Bridge]”) & nobody cared or noticed. They called her “weak”, instead of helping. Billie wakes from the dream to find her brother & partner in music Finneas next to her & he comforts her - “as long as I’m here no-one can hurt you [...] they don’t deserve you”. This song is dedicated to their relationship & how Finneas is her constant friend, protector & emotional support person. Its quite a wholesome song really. Thanks for the great reaction, love Billie Eilish & your interpretations

I realise this is months late lol. She was feeling suicidal when she originally wrote the first (unreleased) version of this. "Everything I wanted" = death. It was literally all she wanted at the time. I don't know if she made any attempts, but she was certainly self-harming regularly, particularly after she read things that trolls posted about her ("If they knew what they said would go straight to my head"). The version you are watching is the second version after she recovered, and she added the chorus. Her family used to take it in turns to stay with her overnight when she was feeling particularly suicidal. The chorus is from her brother's viewpoint, and is a summary of the many long conversations that he used to have with her in the middle of the night when she feeling at her worst (note that the chorus is the only time he sings harmony in this song). This song is her way of thanking her brother for helping her get through it. She likes to leave her songs open to interpretation as much as possible, deliberately introducing ambiguity. "Listen before I go" is very intense, pretty much her suicide note, without any glimmer of hope. I can't listen to it when I'm feeling vulnerable in that way, whereas this track always has the underlying redemption of the chorus.

@hunted by ghosts +1! AND my 13 months of severe insomnia is getting better thanks Billie and Finneas. I can finally get some rest, because for the first time in 10+ years someone else describing their anxiety, fear and pain actually helps me! Usually when someone try to explain their feelings I listen and try to understand, but it always makes me feel even worse and ugly inside, since I'm always, always, always "worse" in everybody else's eyes. And I'm so tired of this Olympics in traumas, depressions, anxiety; the fucking NUMBER of different diagnoses! And all I want is some sleep, someone who just sees me for me and not my mental health, comforting music and literature, and maybe this channel and fellow commentators like you. 🖤

She started directing her own videos a couple years ago. She purposely leave some blank screen at the end so KZbin ads don’t cover the end of her videos. And the song is about a dream Billie had where she jumped of the Golden Gate (Thought I could fly, so I stepped off the Golden). She and her brother are super close and he’s her person who is always there for her. That was him in the video. They write all their music together.

Thank you for your reaction and analysis! Coincidentally, looking for new Billie Eilish stuff this evening, the channel I clicked on (right now) is DASDING [March 29, 2019] "Billie Eilish- Why she was so embarrassed she could cry" and after the interviewer shares with Billie how some of her videos are scary for people, at 5'13" she asks Billie, "I bet there are some things that you are personally scared of" and Billie shares, "yes, the OCEAN" and "water freaks me out dude" - she was conquering her fear of water in the "Happier Than Ever" music video, swimming under water to come up on the roof top. It was a coincidence that I saw this after watching your reaction!

A lot of her songs and videos are definitely open to interpretation, and a lot of them do tend to be a bit darker. I think the thing that has always terrified me the most about this video is that the only way out is to open the windows, but that's not a guaranteed escape. Whatever they do to get out is going to be HARD, and there's no way to guarantee an escape. The ending for "Happier than Ever" never felt ambiguous to me. I saw the water as representative of her emotions, not the relationship, so her standing in the rain and jumping in the water at the end was her accepting and feeling her emotions. Hard to do, not necessarily pretty, but ultimately positive. If you'd like a more upbeat, positive song from her, check out "My Future," or possibly "Therefore I Am." I think "Therefore I am" is more fun and upbeat, but maybe less deep in interpretation.

At the time she wrote this, "everything Billie wanted" was to die. However, in her dream (which actually happened, btw) committing suicide turned into a "nightmare," not because she regretted dying, but because nobody noticed her jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, ("Thought I could fly, so I jumped off the golden..." ) and nobody cared. Billie is now largely over her suicidal thoughts. Just to complete the loop, though, I would love to see you react to her singing her suicide note live at age 17 in "Listen Before I Go." It is simply stunning. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5aVialomalkeMk

Billie has always been very forthcoming about her struggle with depression and how it's affected her life. She's also been very pro-therapy throughout, and therapy versus medication or self-medicating. Family means everything to her and her brother. You can really see her struggle through her music and you can tell when she starts getting better, her depression improves, and she gains her confidence. She's so much stronger these days, and it's amazing to see.

I agree with one of your earlier suppositions, that Billie’s burgeoning fame coupled with the crappy relationship she sings about later in Happier Than Ever, are akin to being underwater and overwhelmed. The bright side is that Billie recognizes that her older brother, Finneas, will always be there to help her through the ocean of emotions. To me, pushing on the gas pedal is a good thing. It symbolizes moving forward. Instead of sitting there, drowning under the crush of water, she and her brother will hold hands and drive through it together. Just found your channel. I’m enjoying your insight. Thanks.

It's also about how she loves her brother how is the guy you see in the video who have helped her soo MUCH like helped her out of killing her self (when she was 16 she tryed to kill her self by almost jumping out of a vindo but her familie stopped her) yes all her songs end like that. Im sure someone said already but Billie and her bro Finneas are two sides of the same coin, he helps produce/write all the music, hes sorta the unsung hero of her stardom. They grew up extremely close and i personally think this song is her contemplating where she has ended up along with her bro, but he’s had a completely different experience. And the chorus “as long as im here, no one can hurt you” i always thought it was finneas reassuring her. Either way its easily one of Billies best songs! 💜

To me “if they knew what they said would go straight to my head what would they say instead” means being aware that some people walk on eggshells with the way they talk to you and hating that they know they have to be careful what they say because they know how broken i am and how i will go off the handle based on my overthought perception of what they say. For me sometimes i will overthink something someone says and attribute it to something completely unrelated in my life which can trigger a breakdown and all the person said was something harmless and that had nothing to do with what my brain immediately related it to. Sometimes its only part of what a person said to me too like my brain just goes other places and people dont know how to approach me because i may breakdown over something unrelated so if theyre not careful it could be something they say or their tone of voice that sets me off.

Today is a sad day for me 😔 I was following some news about a kid who fell down a 32 meters well and was stuck there for 4 days, rescue teams had to excavate a hole near the well cause they couldn't do it from above... Huge apparatus but when they got to the kid he didn't survive the injuries 😔...

At 20 years of age now, she seems to be and says she is in a much better place now. Fame was thrust upon her at a much too early age. Please watch her concert on Disney + called Happier Than Ever, with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra and Children's Choir. Such beautiful and emotional music I have never heard before in my more than 50 years of listening to music.

She singing particulars to make it universal, but you are trying to find her particular problem against a background of clients and knowledge about afflictions. Yes that will create unresolved issues. BTW, she did several interviews about this song and its significance. In the documentary about her life, her mother interrupts her while she's writing this very song and there's a parent-child exchange that I never thought I'd ever see.

She’s basically just saying how after everything, her doubting her self and all the hate from the game and stress, he was there to comfort her. She says “when I wake up I see you with me and you say” she’s basically telling you what her brother tells her to make her feel better, such as “u wouldn’t wonder why they don’t deserve you” and “as long as I’m here, no one can hurt u”

Ya gotta respect the ABSTRACT, right? For me, what this identifies with me, is: My dads death and everywhere in my life I’ve been since. He was the only person I ever truly had. He died at the same exact week I told him I was getting a divorce from a 14 year marriage with 2 small children. He was NOT OKAY with my decision at first. He was terrified for me and my kids. He died about a week later. My decision flipped the world upside down. -->> And I think subconsciously, I have been stuck for years, because I miss my dad so much that I think I might have wanted to go with him when he died, and I feel like no one on this planet gets me or loves me like he did, or ever will. All is true! BUT, the problem is, sure, when my life is on fire and exploding, I can lay with his ghost, BUT THAT ONLY MAKES ME DEAD TOO. I seem to have been trying pretty hard to flush my life down the toilet since he died. - It doesn’t make me any less dead, and it doesn’t make him any more alive. SO UNDER THE SEA I SHALL BE? Good psychology subject. Trust me. Took me over ten years to be able to figure out why on earth I would feel the need to start smoking again after having quit for nine year, RIGHT AS MY FATHER WAS DYING OF LUNG CANCER. 1000% illogical, irresponsible, and knowingly cruel to my own kids if it means them having to lose me early like I lost him early. You can’t let go if it’s all you ever had. HE KNEW I WAS SPECIAL. EVERYONE ELSE KNOWS I SUCK. Maybe when she says …”but when I wake up, I see you here with me.” Maybe it has to do with like (bear with me) like as if when someone was hammering my dads casket shut while i I was hugging it goodbye, my shoulder sleeve got nailed in with the wood as it was being lowered (…?) I’m almost over it. Except now my children are almost all grown up, my kitchen is still a mess, and I have no desire to ever get into a relationship again. I need my space while I glare out of windows and lose my car key’s repetitively. It was bad enough when my husband (x) would watch me and judge and critique my style of falling apart. Lol! It’s true. He did not deserve me. I was way too good for him, and to him. I would rather die alone than live with someone who doesn’t even like me. SO, maybe I’ll just hang out here on the mother-ship until I end up somewhere else, and hopefully my dad is there too. Sure, if I ended up having a crush on somebody and they felt the same way, GREAT, as long as they don’t touch my stuff, try to tell me what to do, or shake their head when I speak.

It was said that her brother (in the car) is her co-writer, and her producer, so she is with him constantly and he is her supporter. The symbolism then, is that she took him with her on this 'ride'... that she feels guilty for her darkness and how the fame has overtaken both of their lives. She's both grateful for him being there for her, and a little ashamed of how he's had to be 'under water' with her.

She's a very honest songwriter with her brother. You should try some of Demi Lovato's music. Like "Warrior" "Father" "Stone Cold" "Sober" "Anyone" & "Dance with the Devil". I always feel like those are a path to how she got to where she is and was. Also I wonder about songs about sexuality...why aren't you covering the question about when a woman reaches a certain age & starts feeling in touch with herself then writes a song about it... the woman artist can be vilified occasionally for finding her own home in her own skin (usually in her 20's). So like Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman" "God is a Woman" Demi Lovato "Body Say" -but she's written a song about finding herself in every album though her earliest albums were clean-written. Billie Eilish did it with "Billie's Bossa Nova" which is a style of music that you hear in a lot of jazz clubs (at least where I did as a kid) and they did it EXACTLY right. I remember listening to a CD of my parents' favorite local jazz singer bossa nova and it was awesome.

Thank you for acknowledging that some people are mostly alone. I haven't seen any other therapist say that, and it needs to be said. The optimistic "you are never alone if you reach out" trope is a lie for so many people who do reach out and find nothing. I know you didn't mean it that simply, but it is true for so many.
