if you listen carefully. the first verse is her jumping and the second verse is her in the water. after jumping off the bridge she tried to scream but her head was under water. after people realize she'd tried to take her life, they called her weak like she's not somebody's daughter (the exact same way people call suicide victims weak or selfish for attempting or taking their lives without having a care in the world what the victim themselves might actually be going through)

It took them like a year to make this song. Different verses were written at different times. Billie has had bouts of depression (and it seems she still does). She even had thoughts of suicide several years ago. In her own words: “I think about this one time I was in Berlin, and I was alone in my hotel, and I remember there was, like, a window right there. I remember crying because I was thinking about how the way that I was going to die was, I was going to do it." She felt isolated and alone. She was starting to get well known and “famous.” Most of her friends, unable to relate to Billie's new “pop-star” status, had drifted away. Luckily things have changed since then. She does still deal with bouts of depression. Even as recent as last January. She said she was kind of in a dark place last January and that the Barbie song her and Finneas made for the Barbie soundtrack took her out of that funk she was in. Ps: there’s a lot of things in the video by the way. Little hidden things. In the beginning, the lights on the towers in the background light up on time with the piano keys, and then the lights on the street post on the windshield go by in rhythm with the beat. And when she talks about the Golden Gate Bridge (as you noticed), the scenery out the window does change to a bridge. That is her brother in the car with her. PPS: she directed this video herself.

Overall I think the song is getting at how all of Billies hopes for her music career have come true but that didn’t guarantee happiness for her, and in many ways may have brought unhappiness (the lyrics “I had a dream, I got everything I wanted, but it might have been a nightmare”). She has said in interviews that she was struggling with suicidal ideation and that’s what prompted the song. But her and Fineas turned it into a song more focused on supporting someone in that depression rather than focusing solely on the depression/suicidal thoughts she was having.

Big BiFi fan here. Really enjoyed your reaction to my favorite song by Billie & Finneas. You are so right, she seems to be saying she had a nightmare of jumping and no one cared about her. They won a Grammy for it and it wasn't on any album release. Notice how the backgrounds moving by at beginning match the beats?! Thanks Terell!!

Her brother saved her so many times she said his was dedicated to him now for me this song is deep because my brother saved me as well when I was at rock bottom I was 15 when he was born I was about to commit suicide I asked God for a sign my brother ended up being born I saw his face and it changed my outlook on life I love for his sake now I’m happy and live for me but at the time it was for him now I’m saving him from that same darkness his 9 and has told me I’m the only person who’s keeping him from hurting himself I’m trying to fight for custody since my mom is unfit and our dad is bipolar schizophrenic there divorcing I’m helping my dad out since his not as bad as my mom but I’m hoping I get custody and I’ll take him to see our dad whenever he wants because our mom won’t she said herself she doesn’t care about my brothers mental health so me and my bestie are all he gots left our God mom passed 4yrs ago and our cousin 1yr ago so I’m his safe haven his gotten so attached to me because I raised him and take him away from the abuse we save each other every time just like Finneas and Billie do

What if maybe going into the depths, under water, was in reference to the deep, sometimes f’d up, depths of your own personal mind once you get sucked into the rabbit hole of fame. It’s a train that takes control of you; you don’t get to control the train. And you are a human every morning, and every night when you fall asleep. No matter where you go, there you are… but be REALLY glad if you aren’t by yourself in the depths, with the weight of the ocean pushing down on you while you just look at it like, “Oh cool. Look. The ocean is above us now.” BUT I do feel that it’s multifaceted. Think of a young teenage girls self esteem with all the hateful media. Like her brother trying to comfort her by saying ‘They don’t deserve you.’ “If I knew it all then would I do it again? If they knew what they said would go straight to my head what would they say instead?” But, when she was a little girl she had a DREAM, then she got everything she wanted? You never know where you really are until you get there. SHE will NEVER have to be there ALONE. (I’m jealous.)
