You should do a full kendrick album from start to finish. Including songs you have already done. Picking a song like this is like taking a book and reading a random chapter. With that being said, still a great reaction to the song itself.

kungfu kenny albums is beautiful rap. i think Damn also can be played in reverse. In Yah he says "I'm an Israelite, don't call me black no more". In Israel, they read books from the back to front and read right to left on the page. Makes so much more sense as to why it would be played backwards, haven't heard anyone mention this

I'm a social service assistant in IHS for adolescent substance abuse. There are things we learn about empathy when dealing with our kids, like eye contact. The layer in this video, starting when kendrick starts "expressing" himself to his therapist, her facial reactions, and then ultimately at the end losing eye contact when he says "if I didn't learn to love myself forgive myself a hundred times, dawg" she looks down, saddened (cardinal rule i believe to not show these kinds of expressions or break eye contact so hard while helping a patient). To me that signified that she simply didn't have a rebuttal or couldn't find the words to help Kendrick, with him ultimately turning his back to the therapist, and then an angel putting his arm around him, a metaphor that maybe he feels only god and music* has his back. As a black man (and I'm not trying to make this racial at all, forgive me, statistically black men loathe the idea of therapy) I always feared therapy, up until maybe 2 years ago I started seeking help. I am currently on my 4th therapist. This video made me cry the first time I watched, and almost any other time. Sometimes I feel like I am alone in this, that there is a lot of pressure and guilt on me to be the man, be there for my family, be proud when I know I should. I was having a hard time today, cried on my lunch break, but I'm feeling better especially after watching your reaction, it really helped me. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

It seems significant that in order to play the piano he has to turn his back on the therapist, like he doesn't feel like he has the time for self evaluating while he's working.

also significant that the angel only shows up once he turns his back on the therapist and turns to music instead. I wouldn't interpret that as lacking the time for self evaluation.. more that therapy could have one role in his life (dealing with himself honestly), while music plays another role (getting closer to God). And in this instance, he seeks to get closer to God just after facing himself through therapy. I'm personally not a believer at all, but this is how I'm reading it for Kendrick. Also of note that in the album version of this song there's the line "anytime I couldn't find God, I still could find myself through song", so there's definitely interplay here throughout, regarding therapy, self-reflection, music, and spirituality.

The best thing abt the video is how towards the end kendrick turns back to the piano showing that music is his therapy even tho he has a therapist to vent to he still chooses to release his stress with music and singing.

I am a die-hard Kendrick Lamar fan and this is in my top three probably my number one favorite Kendrick Lamar song because I relate so much to it so much. It's like I wrote it every time I listen to it. It breaks me down and by the time it gets to the end of it, it's like I'm built back up. Anyway, I stumbled upon your channel channel because I was searching for breakdown of this song. And I got to tell you I've listened to this song damn near everyday since the moment the CD came out. I just want to tell you what an excellent, perfect job you've done breaking this song down. Lots of clarity now. And I also subscribe to you now. Thank you

When he realizes the angel-like kid is kendrick's inner child. He was giving wings as a child becux of his talent n was praised for it. So he does things that made other people happy and always chasing something he could never find But he realizes it now that he was going thru something (issues n trauma), which if not deal with could potential mess with his life and loved ones. In the end, you can see his inner child consoling and being there for him. It's like an acknowledgment and forgiveness of Kendrick and his wrongs😢🤧

I’m a therapist in training who’s attempting to simultaneously heal from trauma that extended over a long period of time. I loved this song when I first heard it and it was so healing and cathartic for me, but I just experienced the music video today for the first time. When I tell you I cried my eyes out and appreciated this song more than I thought I already could. My BA is in English and experiencing the symbolism in this video was amazing. Watching it and experiencing the music helped me release pain I hadn’t recognized I had still been holding on to. Kendrick has been my favorite rapper for years, and I’m happy he’s willing to be authentic and vulnerable with his audience. Vulnerability can be a difficult thing to embody after we’ve learned that being open and close to others isn’t safe. The beautiful thing about music is that each person can feel it through their subjective experiences, it’s up to interpretation and that’s what’s so powerful about this to me.

7:27 I interpreted this as a healed inner child, in companionship with the adult self present day. At the beginning of the video, this inner child limped into the scene, appearing injured or “hurt”. The immediate camera switch to the adult self was for the effect of how the hurt inner child can erupt to the surface in a >:( situation.

I got everything I’ve ever wanted from working hard and it’s almost like I’m just empty. I think I’ve put so much into this career that I’ve lost precious moments, people constantly needing me, and I have so much weight on my shoulders. I used to feel like I could put that weight on and charge on. Put my head down and persist. It worked but at what cost? That’s where I’m at.

Kendrick is saying that he is in the wrong and has done more harm to the world than good. because the industry build him up and tear him apart so hes morality is dust. "even tho he is a good person and knew at some levels what was happening and going on, he still lost himself in the sauce of it all. And now hes trying to fix it and be honest about it. Thats what he is referring to in the song, and also share and help the world thru therapy in his music, beeing honest and sharing sensitive personal stuff, in hopes of inspiring and making room for others too do the same. Alot of men is under the false impression of being sensitive is a sign of weakness. When in reality its true strength, and also transmute the negative into positive. And in doing so gives you more love, freedom and peace. In other words he is saying that what you alt want and percieve as happiness, like success and idols and people you look up too in the industry is not idols and people you should look up too for the most part. its a false idea of happiness and its the blind leading the blind. Thats what he is saying with the "its rare when some1 takes your dreams back". The dream you all want is not it, its not happiness and in reality. The rich people are poor in spirit and the poor are actually the rich persons in many ways because Money and success is not what life is about. But too walk in the image of jesus chist and too live a moral life gives you more than money could ever buy you. and all this false praise and perception of happiness is all just bullshit. And its done so much more harm to the world than good.

It would’ve been better for you to watch a video with the lyrics on it. Lines like “I care too much, wanna share too much In my head too much, I shut down too ain’t there too much , ima complex soul They layered me up, then broke me down The morality’s dust , I lack in trust” I really relate to those words. He’s been said he’s not our savior but as a human, I really feel/felt the same way he does.

He is representing The Devil, Lucifer, fallen angel.... Hence the therapist asked him why did he text her at 02:00 in the morning(witching hour aka devil's hour) saying that he feels like he was falling. Then the scene cuts to an angel in red with a sad face, then the angel grows up with his wings clipped. (also while they are laughing about him taking the parking spot, she says you and he responds NO. I take that to mean that it wasn't the devil but Kendricks ego... -Some put it on the Devil when they fall short I put it on my ego, lord of all lords, Sometimes I fall for her, dawg-) The devil is a liar and deceiver REVELATION 12:9: And the great dragon was cast out - that serpent of old called the Devil and Satan, who (deceiveth) the whole world. He was cast out onto the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. The devil comes to steal kill and destroy John 10:10-29: 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. He stole the ladies parking space, he lied about stealing her parking space and said he felt decent about, and all throughout the video his life was being destroyed and he was dead(in the sense of eternal death separation from God.) Also notice how in the verse he listing all the things that people blame on the devil (this video is supposed to be showing sympathy for the devil), which is why he says he puts his downfalls on his ego lord of all lords but even that is a lie. Kendrick is actually telling us without telling us that he sold his soul and he has to play the game(you have to read in-between the lines) The devil is actually pride(ego)... "Pride comes before the fall" In this life you either follow God or the Devil(to chose to follow yourself and do what you want carnally is following the devil.) Following God is actually dying to yourself. I hope this helps someone in the name of Jesus Christ... I like Kendrick and his artistry(but like he said he is not your savior) be careful of the idols you worship... Which is most likely how Kendrick got into this situation God bless by the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus name. Amen

This was a good analysis with all the Bible verses but I don't believe that it is saying that Kendrick sold his Soul, I think it is more so conveying the message that even he falls short and falls into traps set by the Devil by acting in certain ways such as stealing the parking spot or lying. Him saying his downfall is because of his Ego emphasizes the idea that, despite his image, he is flawed as well. This then obviously leads to the same message that you already made clear which is don't worship other people (especially celebrities in our day and age) because they too are flawed and humans just like any other.

It’s ok to be imperfect. We feel we have to be perfect to be valued but that’s not true. None of us are perfect. We all have that internal fight and dialogue along with the tendency to be very critical of ourselves. That’s a good thing because it forces us to look in the mirror at who we truly are and then we can choose to change paths or stay where we are. It’s also bad because it can be exhausting to constantly question ourselves. Every time I watch that video I gain another aspect. The time running out, the being proud of our wrong action or laughing at our missteps and imperfections, the self reflection, how others put us on a pedestal then let us down or forget us, how we are humbled, how we go from sad childhood to a sad adulthood, how we struggle with who we are or accept who we are…all of that but the truth is that we are still worthy. And for those who do believe in a greater power, you see the correlation to how we view ourselves and how God views us or how the angels still protect us. I just love Kendrick for always giving us things to think about and for the thoughtful visuals.
