To give some context, this song was in part a response to Fox News's Geraldo Rivera commenting about Kendrick's song "Alright" and saying on tv that hip hop such as Kendrick has been doing more damage to young African American's in recent years than racism has. This was Kendrick calling them out for that, essentially saying that this is what his rap is. It's his life, his DNA, and they can not take that away from him, and can't put him down because the things he raps about in this song are what make him who he is, and has shaped his life.

Exactly, the whole “DAMN” album is a reflection of Kendricks raw thoughts on certain topics/feelings ie “Feel,Humble,God,Pride,Lust,Love,Fear etc.” and throughout the album it is up for you to decide if with his upbringing is his outlook on life based on wickedness or weakness within himself.

"Helaldo" is and always has been a Media hoe. So what. His word means nothing. Hasn't since the 90's. Every watch his show? SMH
@nygroover397 Жыл бұрын
He's basically describing what it means to be BLK (American Black) Of African/Hebrew descent we may be...but we are not African American. That's who the P.T.B. want Us to be it makes them feel "safer". Smdh This is who we are. Everything we are, were, could be. Good...Bad...Evil...Right and Wrong, Just and Criminal, Academic...ad Artist...Protector and Destroyer and everything in between. That's the point of it. But didn't I just describe being...oh I don't know... HUMAN?! He's describing human nature. The song is asking...Why is our humanity such a Dmn threat?! 😞 Gotta actually Be BLK to read between those lines. That's why most folks miss it. Real Rap is poetry. And as we all know from English class poetry is more than just the actual text. If you research the time period, culture, artist and break down the lyrics like in poetry in English class. Come at it from that perspective and it gets easier to get past the portrayed images to the intent behind the text. P.s.: "Helaldo" is a Media hoe/hypocrite who jumps on the bandwagon of whatever issue to attempt to revive his relevancy - which has been on "life support" since his b.s. tv show way back when. He is a media mercenary basically. ☮️

Fun fact: kendrick lists 23 things "in his DNA" which is how many chromosomes make up the human body, aka made of DNA, aka your genes.

FUN FACT: On this track as well as others on the album, Kendrick is speaking as a character named Kung Fu Kenny. Hence, the appearance of Don Cheadle, the OG Kung Fu Kenny in the Rush Hour movies. Awesome video. I'm a fan of what you're doing. Keep up the great work! 🤗

“He must have lived this”…. Brutha I love your reactions but we all love this for the most part. I’m the oldest of 4 and I’m half black / white , shit was crazy when I was young. I was born and raised in Oakland helping take care of 3 kids starting when I was 4 years old. It was STILL my job to make it to college to set an example … even though no one from either side had made it that far yet. Then when I eventually made it there and was making deans list no one was willing to help. I grew up in hotel rooms and family houses that were willing to take us in. I had to go with my mother to the food bank so that my siblings could eat properly. I can’t describe how good cheap bbQ meat taste when you haven’t PROPERLY eaten for 4 days……. ……..it was what it was brutha …. Still got my advanced degree in marine ecology though lol

Don Cleadle's character is a "Black" police detective, working for the racist justice system, . He starts the conversation with a degrading DNA remark and chuckles, but once he hits the lie detector machine he is suddenly transformed. Kendrick drains his energy with the back of and forth, indicating that he shares some of the same feelings as Kendrick, but has been trying to supress them. Defeated, he releases Kendrick and Kendrick reunites with his crew. They are his protectors from whatever! That's hood life frfr.

This made me so happy. Now that we're on Kendrick, please. PLEASE do Ab-Soul. Has a song called the book of soul where he draws comparisons to the book of Job. As a Christian I think Tom would appreciate it, but! My recommendation is "Ab-Soul - Pineal Gland".

Tom it would be the most amazing thing if you react to one of ab-soul's album, whether 'Control System,' 'Long-Term mentality' or even 'Do What Thou Wilt' which is his latest and most popular Album. He has a album coming out this year. If you have a hard time processing Kendrick Lamar then your in for a treat with Ab-Soul. The way Ab-Soul manipulate English language is astonishing. His word play is perhaps the best in the world in my opinion. Hope you do one for this interesting channel. Thank you.

Understand this: He's talking about his ancestry and being Black in America. As Don Cheadle goes in on the song in the beginning, he's waking up to the fact that he, too, is Black in America. He goes into convulsions because he's having a hard time accepting it This is depicting the kind of reaction Clarence Thomas, Tim Scott, Byron Donalds, or any other sell out might have in struggling with the dichotomy of being Black in America and dealing with the delusion that they cannot be white no matter how hard they try. I encourage you to consider this context and listen to the song again. Like another commenter said, there's a whole lot to unpack here. Peace.
