This song is his most well known off his album Good Kid MAAd City, this album is what gave him his place as a top rapper since this showed his ability to storytell while still making them hits. This album is his story growing up in Compton and how it shaped him. It has “interludes” between songs that have extra story telling pieces, if you listen from beginning to end it is honestly crazy. You should definitely react to more from this album.

Pirus is a gang that originates from Compton, they wore red before the bloods were formed and even had a short alliance with the crips. But after fights over territory over drugs and money the piru and crips became enemies and joined the bloods when they formed. The piru gang got split up after years of internal conflict. Kendrick grew up in a piru neighborhood the west side piru. He mentions another rapper that comes from a clique called the tree top piru (yg who is another artist who is amazing).

Pirus are pirus they wear burgundy (not red) they say blood and are in conflict with crips and say Brompton which u should never say in compton unless you're a piru. but they are NOT bloods. It's a little more complicated than that. You got Brims, damu, pirus, and then you got bloods. A piru could be walking down the street and come across a blood and bang on him like if he were a crip (some don't get along) Example: there's southsiders and sureños (completely different). We have Maravillas and sureños. Maravilla is just that maravilla they're not sureños even tho they say Ese, Southside, and from los angeles (birth of sureños) they're not Sureños but they are southsiders. Sureño is a gang/mafia southsiders are more of their geographic location. Lowell street gang of Los Angeles are southsiders but NOT sureños

Kendrick didn’t intentionally lace his marijuana. Someone else laced it and didn’t tell him (I’m assuming the drug dealer). As he said in the song, it’s the reason he hardly smokes anymore because of his first experience with marijuana being laced.

Once you listen to each song on this album, you should sit down on your own time and listen to the entire album from start to finish. For some context, it's a story album and this song transitions into another song you listened to already, Swimming Pools (Drank). That's what the voicemails at the end or beginning of each song are for.
@Dud3itsj3ff2 жыл бұрын
"If Pirus and Crips all got along, They'd probably gun me down by the end of this song" Piru "Bloods" and Compton "Crips" The comptom part is simple enough, but Piru is a street. The original set of bloods, as far as I know.

Long but important history from an Angelino: The Crips came before the Prius. But the first documented Black gang was formed in the 1840s by runaway slaves as a means to protect themselves from white violence. During Jim Crow/sharecropping/ urban migration, they started to get involved w petty organized crime bc it was the only legitimately viable way for 90% of the community to generate income. Only Du Bois’ “talented tenth” had other options. The Crips were formed in 1969 by two teens who tried to join the Boy Scouts but were rejected bc of their race. It was originally an after school club and youth alternative to the Black Panthers. The name is an acronym for “Community Revolution in Progress.” They then decided to link up w gangbangers from their area as a means to protect themselves from other gangs, who were rising in numbers after segregation was made illegal and “white flight” started to happen. This is bc those parts of the city started to degrade without the privileges, rights, and wealth of the white people. Community development stopped entirely. This lead to an increased demand in income from gangs, then the rivalry and turf wars began bc of competition, much like we see in other gangs like Mafias. The Pirus were formed out of self defense from the Crips in 1969. The Crips jumped two teens at Cenntenial HS (Kendrick’s alma mater). The name came from the Compton’s Piru St. Before all this, non-Crip areas in SLA called each other “blood” as a type of slang. After a few years, in 1973, the Prius formed an alliance with other gangs like the Brims, who were all being overpowered by the Crips. They took on the name “blood” bc the non-Crip slang united them. The more you know 🌈

The deep voice you hear at the beginning is someone gang banging on him. They ask where his grandma lives because where he grows up and where his grandma lives usually means he knows everyone in that street/hood/gang and he himself hangs with them making him a rival if he answers the wrong streets to the people that's banging on him they could kill him. Basically they're affiliating/labeling him when he might not be a gang member. A piru is just that a piru/gang. People call them bloods but they're not bloods. They say blood, and wear "red" In this case burgundy but they're not bloods. Blood is another gang in compton so you have bloods, Crips, pirus. All rivals The question when he asks if you believe if he killed someone at 16 is just that a question. If you see him walking down the street would you think he's a killer and this tough gang member. Or would you say na he's not a threat he's just a kid. He's just kendrick. What would you see
