The lyrics “Like a priest behind confession walls, I judge myself. Kneeling on a metal grater. Bloody like a body that has died, and it’s myself, tangled in my own intestines” slapped me so hard in the face, gut, & heart with relatability to the point I couldn’t breathe. Melanie is a gift and deserves way more credit than she gets.

Here's the thing about Melanie's music: yes there is a story that runs through the 3 albums.. but it's very loose and spread out. It's not like every song leads into the next to create one linear storyline; the songs do stand alone. But the character of Crybaby's life (and death) is told across three albums. Album 1 is about different moments in her childhood (the world has touches of fantasy), album 2 is about her high school experience, album 3 is about her transition from one life to the next, reviewing her life as Crybaby. You can listen in any order technically, but the overall picture is better painted from album 1-2-3. P.S. the majority of her first album is told from the perspective of her character, not about her own life. The second album has more broad themes about the world in general. The third album is very much Melanie's own personal experiences

So I actually became a fan fairly recently, 2020ish was when I finally sat down and listened to her entire discography and all her videos/the K-12 film. Personally I think you should go back and watch every video/listen to every song in order, that's really how you're going to get her story. You're doing great with what you've got but there's SO much more and her first album, Crybaby, really does an amazing job of showing you who this character is in her heart. I think it would elevate your appreciation of this album and what's happened to her.

To fully grasp the intricacies of Melanie Martinez's musical narrative, I concur with those who suggest beginning from the very start. Her songs, when listened to in sequence, weave together a captivating tale, with each album serving as a distinct chapter. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that I've yet to come across a subpar track in Martinez's discography. Her music can be both hauntingly relatable and melancholic, yet each song possesses its own distinct power and can stand alone as a singular masterpiece.

I agree with what others have said! Whikst the album by it's self is easy to digest and relatable, you get an even fuller and richer understanding of it all if you go back from the start Starting with the Crybaby album, which I recommend you do album reacts to catch up on them lol, but also, do watch the music videos Crybaby is a character that Melanie created for her music, its used to represent things she went through, witnessed or even things that just have a large impact on her and her feelings on things, like you'll see imagry patterns like the rabbit headed creatures throughout her stuff which represents her own traumatic experience, there's many other's too, but yeah, Crybaby album first (in order) she's got a lot of music videos for it too! (She performed on the voice before her albums came out if you want to see her covers of "Crazy" and "Toxic" befire she became famous) after the Crybaby album, then theres the k-12 album, which she also made into a movie on youtube if you want to react to it, that comes next (and follows Crybaby's story) and then theres her after school EP which is super good, but Portals is in relation the K-12 film (after it) its also hinted at all the way through the film :) Please react to more of her stuff, possibly a few videos at a time *or* entire albums so we can watch your reactions ^_^

@@ReactionTherapyOfficial great, in that case, when (or if) you get to k-12, I would recommend watching the film itself (those music videos that belong to k-12 that she has on the channel are fragments from this film), in the film itself reveals other characters and raises some issues that are not reflected in the music videos. there are references to the crybaby album, and you can also see the connection between k-12 and portals in some of the dialogue.
@Nevermind-ng7lr Жыл бұрын
@@ReactionTherapyOfficial and yes, the after school EP does not refer to the character and the universe, in it she talks about personal experience directly (in the albums she does this indirectly, since the character is based on herself, but is not a complete reflection of herself).

I’m so happy you’re reacting to Melanie’s music! I love hearing your insights and I got so excited when I saw this video come up on my suggested haha. Little fun fact about this song that makes me love it even more - this was the first song Melanie has produced on her own. She wrote, sang and produced Void which I find very inspiring! If you want to understand the full story of the character Melanie has created (Crybaby) then I would definitely start from her first album “Crybaby”, then the film k-12 and then her newest album Portals. The After School EP, Crybaby Deluxe bonus songs, Fire Drill and the three bonus tracks on the Portals deluxe edition aren’t supposed to fit into Crybaby’s story but they all are honestly some of my favourite songs she has ever made so I highly recommend listening to them as well if possible. They all have messages to unpack in them as well even if they don’t 100% fit into the story. In my personal opinion, Melanie has not put out one bad song and everything in her discography speaks to my soul in one way or another haha. Everything she does is pure magic to me. I was 14 when I started listening to her music and it has truly been so healing for me. Thank you for your awesome videos and I can’t wait to see what other songs you’ll be listening to coming up! 😊

So the reason you’re getting mixed replies is because Melanie’s songs are good as stand alone songs and if you don’t want to become a serious fan or you just want to enjoy a few of her songs, but not really get to know more about her, then the order of how you listen doesn’t matter. However, if you like movies, shows, books, and stories, then watching and listening to these songs out of order is like getting snippets, teasers, and trailers to a saga or series of movies, books, or episodes. A taste without the full package. If you are interested in learning more about Melanie Martinez and you like stories, I highly recommend listening and watching in order. First: Melanie’s music is dark, creepy, and meant a lot for therapy towards people who have suffered trauma. They cuss a lot and use adult words in general, including just a huge range of vocabulary that people may not always know. (Seems like Melanie’s a reader, lol) This is just a warning, in case these are things you don’t want to hear. She hasn’t experienced everything she sings about, but she makes her music to hopefully help people who have been through those occurrences (she has been through some of those things, but not traumatic until her last toxic relationship). I recommend going in order. Regardless of whether you read the book, watch the music videos, or do both, I suggest starting with the album “Crybaby” in order: Crybaby, DOLLHOUSE, Sippy Cup, Carousel, Alphabet Boy, Soap and Training Wheels double feature, Pity Party, Tag You’re It and Milk and Cookies double feature, Pacify Her, Mrs. Potato Head, and Mad Hatter. After this, watch the K-12 movie. This will include the K-12 album. The next album is the one Melanie just dropped, “Portals.” Much like the last album, Melanie will be releasing a movie for Portals next year. Crybaby is about a character named Crybaby going through a rough childhood and coming to terms with who she is and accepting herself as she is. K-12 is about Crybaby’s school life and social life. Portals is about Crybaby dying and reincarnating as a fairy. Hope this helps.

Unpopular opinion here. He doesn’t NEED to start from the beginning. Stop undermining Melanie and her talent like this. Her writing is so good that he understood nearly everything Melanie was writing about simply from this one song. Does he know the backstory? No. Does he get this was about finding herself and leaving behind her old persona. 100%! He didn’t need to listen to two other albums and watch a movie to understand the message of the song. You insult Melanie (and him) when you imply you have to have heard everything to understand it. This isn’t a Marvel movie. Also can we please stop with idea that art only has one meaning and no other interpretations are allowed? Songs are written poetically for reason. They can mean different things to people regardless of what they actually mean to the songwriter. The reason Melanie has so many adoring fans is because she sings about things they can relate to themselves. None of us have lived Melonie’s life but we all understand what it means to be someone society expects us to be and how unhappy that can make us. She nails that with this ONE song. Don’t steal that thunder. Yes being familiar with her previous work adds to the deeper understanding but stop saying someone has to know it to understand her genius.

The unhappy eyes always related to us as looking at yourself in suicidal ideation. This is a feeling we've had a LOT. We call it "the dress-up game" because basically how it looks to us is like one of those Home Design Makeover games, where you have to pick how you want the room to be designed, but instead it's just placing our body in different rooms, with different "decorations" of blood on walls and writing, and different methods of death. The "trying to find a doorway" right before that makes it feel like that feeling we have where we'll literally be staring at our own cold corpse, and we'll be staring at our face, and our eyes are still open. Trying to find a doorway, through suicide. Through your own dead eyes. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. But when we feel like we're a burden to others, sometimes that discomfort is easier to tolerate. -⚖️/🪤
