This video gets even deeper when you realize that every pair (parent and children) wears the flag’s colors of the countries bordering Rwanda, where his father was killed during the genocide. Stromae and the boy themselves are wearing Rwanda’s flag colors.

When Stromae was little, his father got killed and his mother couldn't handle telling him that, so she told him his father was just 'away'. Only years later he found out about the truth. So the song is not completely biographic but he took elements of his real life for writing this song. Stromae's "Tous les memes" is also amazing, but "Quand c'est" will grab you by the throat and will give you chills.

The title Papaoutai uses a form of abstract pun called a trumpet. This invented word plays between the two senses: "Papa, where are you?" And “empapaouter” meaning “to fool someone” in slang, thus recalling the fickle attitude of the father and the sufferings of the son.

Stromae didn't get to grow up with his father around because he died during the conflict in Rwanda I believe, hence why the boy is with a mannequin because his actual father is dead. I couldn't help but think of Michael Jackson when looking at the father and son in the yellow suits, where the father seemed to be punishing his son for not doing something right, and that's why at the end the boy seems to appreciate that without a father he also doesn't have that authoritarian figure telling him how to be, like the kids shown with their parents, where they are doing the same as the parent. In the beginning the boy was envious of them but he seems to have a better outlook towards the end which is so deep
