This song is about the glorification of suicide. Tyler is very specific to not say the word "suicide" a single time, because he doesn't want to glorify it. He says things like "IT doesn't get glorified" and "we glorify those even more when they..." but he never says the word itself.

While TOP leaves their songs open to different interpretations, I've always felt like this was about how society has come to accept suicide as normal and how it resonates to impressionable youth as a convenient way out of a tough time. Also if you dig into the DEMA lore, the bishops build neon gravestones and practice vialism as their religion.

The neon gravestones are smartphones, left by those who die in this generation; the most intimate possession left behind to their loved ones. That is why the circle of rectangles in the video. Many of the lyrics are about the evils of social media, where troll bullies get children and teens to commit suicide. This song is a real indictment against smartphone addiction.

To me, I see it as "communicating further engraving an earlier grave is an optional way, no" as him saying that because of all the attention suicide gets and the almost celebrity status someone will get over a tragic suicide leads young people to think more towards suicide as a valid way to escape whatever may be going on in their life instead of seeking the help they need first.

Another song about battling the suicidal urges. I hear the allure of suicide calling out to me like flashing neon signs, though I know it's the selfish coward's way out. I don't feel enough love and I hope that maybe they'll all love me more when I'm gone (as people often glorify the dead, no matter how they died). But the principled part of me says "No. Don't waste your energy on me if I lose this battle with myself and give up on life and on you. I want to earn redemption by becoming the hero of my own story - defeating all my demons and becoming the best version of myself, rather than giving up the fight.

Interesting interpretation, but yeah, I agree and see a way stronger message that relates to the suicide and death. Neon gravestones being a symbol that attracts attention. Gravestones are usually bland in color; thus, we may not pay attention as much, but what if the gravestone was made out of or decorated with neon? All of the sudden it gets way more attention. And gravestone is a symbol for death (or an attribute of it). "Earlier grave is an optional way"- sucide is an option. While it is, it's a very hurtful one especially for the people around the person who has committed suicide... And if we focus on suicide, rising numbers in sales/titles and everything, it might even inspire some people to go out this way because not just that they'd be escaping endless suffering, but also gain some sort of attention/validation (even though they'd already be dead). It's a tough topic, but they make some very good points... Celebrate life, focus on something that's still alive, how can we improve that, how can we make life worth living, and even if someone dies, how do we talk about it in a form of "it's unfortunate" rather than a glorification "Oh, what a person he was, oh how good their stuff is, oh what a legacy" so that the suicide is not associated with those glorious aspects of the person's life.

To add on to these comments and cement it further; Exactly. He could sellout to death, and the flashy bright grave is calling for him. The grave that glows and stands out. Attention grabbing. Making young people think that, maybe, "an earlier grave is an optional way". And lastly, if he does try to give in to a flashy death, he's telling us, the listeners, NOT to glorify it. "But they won't get them". I won't give in. We should celebrate life, not death. Everything you say in this video is bang on about selling out except its selling out to death. Maybe I just stated the obvious but seeing those connections get me very excited :)

Suicide they sing a lot about it. The glorifi action is the neon gravestone calling you toward it. People will talk all about you and glorify you. He thought about it often and sings about it. He is trying to save people from doing it. He also talks about how he had those thought and the songs are often anti suicide.

I think many people look for more meaning in TOP songs than there is and that's okay. I think Tyler is okay with people interpreting his words in the way that comforts them most or inspires them most. That said, Tyler's lyrics are often incredibly straight forward, blunt and direct. And I think for some songs, Tyler wants us to pick up on that and understand his lyrics are about one thing and one thing only. This is one of those songs. Tyler is talking about the glorification of suicide. Specifically when someone famous or seen as a cultural idol becomes a victim of suicide.

This is a whole other point of view to Neon Gravestones and I love it. Truth is, this song is about suicide being glorified. Famous people committing suicide in order to be 'remembered' . Tyler once said this song almost didn't make it to the album because music industry people were really concerned about the message getting twisted, Therefore he decided to add that line 'I'm not desrespecting what was left behind, Just pleading that IT does not get glorified'. There are so many disingenuous reaction channels out there that research the material before reacting. They pretend to catch every intention and double meaning of every lyric as if they were some kind of savant. I honestly appreciate true reactions such as yours. Yes, you’ll get tons of responses how you got it wrong, but honest reactions are a needed void in this medium. I didn’t read all the comments, but I feel the ones I read were half right. Several years ago there were a string of celebrity suicides, and each garnered much attention followed by a celebration of their lives. These were the “neon gravestones”. TØP has always been messaged towards the suicidal, and especially the suicidal youth. “I’ll mourn for a kid, but won’t cry for a king”…that’s basically the extended title. Keep up with your vids….needed content.

I think other comment have talked about the meaning of the song enough so I'll just recommend a couple other probably less known bands with incredibly thoughtful lyrics: As It Is: The End is very similar to Neon Gravestones but also their New album I Went To Hell And Back is talking about the struggles they've been going through during the pandemic, other songs talk about anxiety, depression, feeling left out/left behind, good stuff Trash Boat: Incredibly honest lyrics about their singer's struggle with an injury he had and the things that came from it like chronic pain and addiction but also talking about anxiety, existential dread and all that good stuff Movements: their singer is writing about his life with BPD so a lot of incredibly real lyrics about what he's going through even though their most popular song Daylily is quite positive and talking about how he hopes his girlfriend will be doing better soon Boston Manor: they're talking a lot about the struggles they go through coming from one of the poorest parts of the UK, the existential dread, the need to leave, the discrimination they face for being from where they are from etc

It seems as though you are interested in getting into the lore. I figured I’d give you a little breakdown (as simple as I understand it without spoilers.) Blurryface Album: Theme colors are black and red. Blurryface is Tyler’s alter ego. He represents Tyler’s insecurities and mental illness. You will notice that Tyler’s neck and hands are painted black representing his insecurities with his voice and writing. Blurryface is also know as Nicolas Bourbaki (aka Nico). Nico is the head of the 9 bishops in control of Dema. (Blurryface album cover has 9 circles on it). Little trivia - Nicolas Bourbaki was a real life group of mathematicians in the 1930s who invented the symbol ø. Which is the symbol for influence. But also is the symbol used in twenty øne piløts. Dema is a place where people are stuck within their mental illness. The bishops worship “fake light”. And lie to people everywhere that everything is perfect and just follow us and you’ll be happy. There is another character Clancy (not sure if it is another alter ego of Tyler or not) who is trying to reveal the truth about Dema and expose their evil ways. (Clancy was part of an online puzzle/scavenger hunt the 21 pilots had before the release of Blurryface) Trench: Theme colors Yellow. Yellow represents hope and peace and real light. There are a group of rebels led by Josh who are called the Banditos. They represent twenty one pilots fans who help Tyler with his mental illness. They give him hope and peace and protect him from Nico and the Nine bishops. Yellow (hope and peace and real light) is like Kryptonite to the bishops. Keep an eye out in the trench videos for the color yellow. Scaled and Icy Theme colors are blue and pink. Everything is poppy and happy. Dema has control of Tyler and josh and are forcing them to put out propaganda music. But like most people they only listen to the beats and not to the lyrics. The lyrics paint a different story. As well Scaled and Icy is a anagram for Clancy is Dead. Which could be a lie or a secret message that Tyler is trying to let us know he’s been captured by Dema. As well in the graphics of the Christmas song they released back in December it said that “scaled and icy is propaganda”. And finally Scaled and Icy. Take the first letters of each word spells SAI. Which is the symbol for the album. Also a sai is the weapon Raphael uses as a ninja turtle. Lol Hope that helps. The lore is complicated so it is the best understanding as I know it. Finally. There is a quadriology of videos that you can do in order. Order: 1) Heavy Dirty Soul 2) Jumpsuit 3) Nico & the Niners 4) Levitate

In fact the neon, or the leds, represent something of wrong and they are the symbols of Dema , that it is a sort of representation of bad vibes of Tyler . Your interpretation does make sense but the actual message of the song is speaking out again glorifying celebrity suicide - people become more famous and we tend to celebrate people after they take their lives and in turn people see the act of suicide being attractive because of all the attention - he talks about how he realizes it would be great for his band if he would take his own life - he's saying instead let's celebrate life and the people who have been strong enough to push through (grandparents) I think if you listen again with that background then you might catch a few other things - you're doing great though and love top!

this song feels even more important now, since it's about the glorification of suicidality and depression, and the band, tyler especially, have been facing criticism about how they're not as depressed any more, even with people explicitly saying "i hope tyler stays depressed so that he keeps making this music" which. no!! the entire band was built on making a family of survivors, and about fighting, and about healing, but as a side effect of wanting to reach out to people along multiple stages of healing is that some people feel a little left behind. but yeah the song is very literally about actual graves and the way fame and suicide intersect the neon is also a part of an arg that the band has been running for a while now!! there's a lot to it but it's cool to see people noticing those elements without the full context; it really gives a cool angle

YAY for another Twenty One Pilots song! 😁 I enjoyed your perspective on this song Tom. My view on the meaning of this song is the recognition and praises people give AFTER someone has passed away specifically when it’s famous people who commit suicide. Their gravestone is in the lights rather than the person being celebrated while they were alive. “Communicating, further engraving An earlier grave is an optional way, No.” Tyler is saying that suicide isn’t the way to get glory or attention and it shouldn’t be an option. And to me; throughout the song he is having that inner conversation with himself about staying alive and not giving into the “glorification”of taking his life. “If I lose to myself” to me is indicative of suicide. But the “neon gravestones try to call for my bones …no they won’t get them.” He isn’t going to give into suicidal thoughts. He talks about “rise in awareness”, “beating a stigma that no longer scares us” and “could we give this some room for a new point of view?” Encouraging everyone to be more open to talking about mental health. At the end he talks about respecting those who paved the way and “to life they were dedicated. Now THAT should be celebrated.” Those who lived before us had hard times too but they stayed and lived and that’s where we should put our focus. Tøp is a deep, emotional, meaningful band and that’s why I love them so much! These are all my interpretation of the song. I hope you react to more Tøp; specifically, “Kitchen Sink.”

i personally think the neon gravestones are metaphorical for how s*icide is glorified and seems like "an optional way". the fact that the gravestones have been made to be neon and bright and colourful is a refrence to it being glamorized in that sense. it could also be that in a pit of complete darkness and mental illness, the gravestones being neon and lit up could paint a picture of it being the only thing in sight in that otherwise pitch black place, symbolizing it seeming like the only option left.

the part about selling out, is actually im pretty sure their record label wanted them to remove this song from the album, but they refused. its because it talks about the glorification of suicide, and how the media glorifies it. its a direct call out. and to him selling out would be just not talking about it to avoid any stigma that would come with it. and the "promise me this, if i lose to myself you wont morn a day and youll move on to someone else" is him talking in a literal sense about committing suicide. hes saying that if he was to lose to himself and kill himself, he doesnt want people to morn or glorify it, and instead move on to someone else by helping people not make the same mistake he would by ending it. i know these paragraphs have been long but i just really wanted to give my perspective on it :))

@@RyanBoddy1 all of their songs are about depression and anxiety and suicide, so if that's what you're into, enjoy! a lot of tyler's solo work from before they started the band is really good as well, and definitely miserable morph, guns for hands, and never take it are also very good; levitate and heavydirtysoul if you like rap; good day and no chances if you like cheerful and vaguely creepy stuff

I suggested this one a couple weeks ago and man I’m so excited to see this reaction! I think your interpretation is pretty good. The way I see it is the neon gravestones are the flashiness of the fake that comes after you die. Specifically, after you commit suicide or fall to overdose or some untimely death. The last verses really resonate with me because they talk about breaking the stigma of talking about suicide but also not glorifying the idea of it. Saying it’s okay to have these feelings but it’s also not okay to continue to truly feel them in a sense.

Hi :) I really like your interpretation of this song 😄 The way I see the song is that Tyler is talking about the glorification of suicide, especially among celebrities If a celebrity commits suicide they will get famous, it will be all over the news and they will most likely gain fans now that they are dead (like Chester from Linkin Park or Robin Williams) "I could go out with a bang, they would know my name, they would host and post a celebration" is what Tyler says in the song. In my opinion he also talks about how suicide can be used as a way to because famous and get recognition or to get back at people. "Promise me this, if I lose to myself you won't mourn a day and you'll move on to someone else" I think here he is telling the fans that if he commits suicide he doesn't want the act to be glorified, he doesn't want to gain fame from it. "maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high" I think here it could mean that Tyler wants the people that have lived through life and haven't given up (like grandparents) be praised and celebrated rather than someone who commits suicide I really love your channel, stay safe and healthy 💕 |-/

Great song. Remember that it is part of a larger concept album “Trench” so it has meaning within the Twenty One Pilots lore of Dema. But all of the songs do also stand alone and open to interpretation for everyone. Tyler is trying to escape Dema and the Bishops of Vialism which is a religion that ultimately leads to suicide. He keeps trying to escape but can’t quite get past Trench and the cycle of doubt and depression allows Nico (his bishop) to regain control of him and bring him back to Dema. The Trench Trilogy videos are well produced mini films that show the struggles. Those songs are “Jumpsuit”, “Nico and the Niners”, and “Levitate”. I don’t think I have anything away, just a basic overview. The songs have many specific details on the lyrics far deeper than what i mentioned. But if you want a list for the story if Twenty One Pilots “Ode to Sleep” official video. Vital to hit first “Lane Boy” official video. Vital to explaining their motivation. Then hit some more from Blurryface like “Ride”, actually every song on Blurryface. I was looking at the song list and you have to do them all, really. “Fairly Local” is my favorite. Also “Goner” is up there with “Trees” for me but DO THE Live at Fox Theater version of that (So impactful). Also get to “Holding on to You” and “House of Gold” from Vessel. When you do “Holding on to You” do the official video for all of the symbolic stuff, then the Live at Fox for the greatest live performance of a song you will maybe ever see.

Thank you for doing this song! As a person that has battled depression and anxiety.. And a mother of three that has helped her children through depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts... This song hit home. It was absolutely beautiful to see them perform this song live with two of my kids. The entire audience screaming the last line of the song about talking to someone of age to life they were dedicated and that should be celebrated. Still gives me chills. TOP has given hope to a lot of us that felt we were down and there was no hope. Someone could finally put into words what I have felt all of my life, but not in a depressing way!

As someone who has struggled with major depressive disorder and suicidal ideation for over 20 years, I mean it when I say that this song actually changed the way I live my life (for the better). It comes down to Tyler's explanation- "The idea of self-harm, depression, suicide…I’d like to believe that there are multiple ways to approach it and talk about it. This angle that ‘Neon Gravestones’ is talking about is one that I haven’t heard much of and wanted because I know that’s what I’d respond to as a challenge. I think at some point, ‘We hear you and we are here for you and we understand you’…There’s a point where that doesn’t help. And what’s the opposite of that? That’s a challenge to step up and defeat something. To win. I am hopeful that people know what I’m trying to say, because it’s potentially hurtful, potentially harmful, potentially offensive. I’m singing what I would want to hear and what I do need to hear. And I feel like there is a group of people like me who will respond to challenge and respond with a little bit of conflict and a win/loss mentality." My next top suggestion? Redecorate 😊

Dude, the other comments on here are for the most part being so soft on you. This song is one hundred percent about the glorification of celebrity suicide and Tyler's own struggle to resist the temptation of becoming another soul lost too soon. Yeesss!!!!! I was just go inns to bed (it’s 3am in Scotland!) and got a notification you’d uploaded lol! So got to check it out before I go to sleep! Ha ha!!! Great reaction Tom, my fav band! This is a really emotional song about glorifying suicide - mostly in the media. It’s not belittling or disrespecting people who go through this but the way it’s treated in our modern day culture. Your interpretation of Tyler not wanting to sell out would work too, that’s the thing about tøp - their lyrics can be taken in many different ways. There are layers depending how ‘invested’ you want to be in the story and world Tyler has created. I’ll try and be briefer than normal lol - The last 3 top albums are ‘concept’ albums (although the music can be enjoyed on its own, without any of the ‘storyline’). So, a number of years ago, Tyler created a world ‘Dema’ to feel a sense of control and to vocalise his internal struggles and the pain he and many others have gone through in the form of depression, anxiety etc. He created characters - ‘Blurryface’ who you saw at the end of ‘Stressed Out’ with the red eyes and deep electronic type of voice. Then the ‘Bishops’ who are in control of Dema. Trench is the place between Dema and normal life, Tyler has had multiple escape attempts from Dema over the years but tends to keep going back - a lot of top concepts are cyclical, I.e. anxiety/depression - then a period of better mental health or in between stage - normal life - back to Dema etc. The neon gravestones in Dema are actual grave markers that the bishops make from neon light tubes (I.e. artificial, jarring, bright light that signifies fame/fortune to many but Tyler dislikes these concepts). We see this playing out in the track ‘Nico and the Niners’ (Nico is Tyler’s Bishop - purpose is to mess with Tyler’s mental health and encourage suicidal thoughts). Tyler is telling the Bishops they won’t get what they want. So, with lots of top tracks you have the literal meaning, ie suicide prevention or your ‘selling out’ theory and then the meaning within the ‘lore’ of Dema if you want to go down that road and then there’s the fact that it’s just good music! Lol! It’s essentially very similar to George Orwell’s 1984 - I’m convinced there is some mirroring of the themes throughout Tyler’s music! 100K here we come!!! I predict Monday - or Tuesday by the latest!!!👍
