Winner of a video, been searching for "work on a cruise ship summer" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Jiyrianna Peyadelyn Plan - (do a search on google )? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.

This is EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!!!!! Very honest & thoughtful. You just saved your viewers from incredible shock & disappointment. Glad I can consider all these factors before changing careers. All the other ship life videos are superficial or don't cover these issues in detail. This video is exactly what i was looking for and answered my questions. I had been wondering if you work non stop during a contract. I read online that you do not work during port days or that you have a few hours off. I worked retail during college so i think i can handle guests but idk about working non-stop, by nature i love to unwind. THANK YOU!

cherishdeb Thanks for watching! And yes I am glad this helped you with a little more depth. It is my main goal to be as neutral as possible and give the pros and cons of everything. There are a bunch of "grumpy" videos out there, but Its very important to make your own decision. You will be working every day for sure, but depending on your position and department it may be shifts or just little bits of work throughout the day. My job required all day everyday. Something along the lines of the shops may be shifts and during the ports you wouldn't work because the shops are closed. There are lots of factors and I have some more videos coming soon with some more aspects of this crazy world of working on ships! Thanks so much again for watching!

John: I used to be a travel agent and once I worked with Princess Cruises as a Crew Travel agent which my job was to arrange the crew's travel between/to/and from the ships and this was fun and the atmosphere was awesome however it was a seasonal job. One thing you must ask people on your videos is Do you get claustrophobia? Cause their crew accommodations could be an inside cabin and a good percentage are inside. Also the fact that you have to mingle only on your time off in the crew locations on board (eg.bar/eating areas/etc). But, you are right all in all if you show you are a great worker and stress doesn't bother you one bit, the cruise lines are for you. If you know ways to appease that 2% of difficult passengers, the cruise lines are gonna hunt you down to work for them and one industry that you can work with is a travel agent working in a customer service office where you answer calls from easy to very difficult clients-this is the test to see if you are cruise worthy. Also you have to answer peoples curiosity about and when prospective people want to know about working on a ship that they don't get their own cruise cabins on the majority of cruises. All in all I love this video.
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and thank you for some fellow professional level insight! Yes the claustrophobia thing could come into play, id say its not as bad as you do not spend much time in your cabin aside from sleeping and getting ready.

I know this comment is a year old but I saw a post from a guy called Dylan Ryan on facebook saying that they're hiring on Princess Cruises I have a few questions 1) How long would I be working there? I don't mind it being long but I'm just wondering 2) What's the pay like 3) Can I bring my laptop (that's all I use in my spare time) 4) Do you have options on what position you want (given that you're qualified of course) 5) I'm not from the US so what if an emergency happens and I urgently need to get home?

I am with Princess Cruises 15 years. You are right about the claustrophobia. I almost went crazy my first contract. OMG. Now I am a 3 stripe officer and have my own cabin with a porthole! I can eat at the buffet too. Crew can go to the crew bar, crew lounge, crew fitness area, and many ships have a crew area with a pool at the front of the ship.

Here's my advice: Learn an instrument, and work as a cruise ship musician. It's probably the greatest and most coveted/envied position on a cruise ship. I've even started vlogging about it if you want to learn more. But it's pretty awesome, and worth trying at least once.

Thank you for making these videos!! I have ALWAYS been so intrigued with ship life! Plus you're super entertaining! I wrote up a resume for becoming a shipboard photographer, but I can't muster up the courage to send it in. My family would be extremely disappointed if I broke away from their standards. They would NOT support me and would have nothing to do with me when I come back. My family disowning me is the ONLY thing that makes me hold back from sending that resume in. But my heart keeps pulling me in the direction of working onboard. Even hearing all the bad things about working on ships I still can't get it off my mind ,It's literally all I can think about. Sorry for the novel of a comment but I really needed to get that out there lol!! Keep up the good work with the videos they are great! :)

I am glad to hear that you enjoy the videos! and you find me entertaining! It makes me happy. Yeah taking that step and making that decision to enter the world of ship life is tough. Not only is it a huge sacrifice for yourself, but your friends and family on land too. I completely understand the whole upsetting thing, but have you ever talked to them about it? Let them know how you feel and how much you think about it? Maybe if you break it down to them and they can see how passionate you are about it, they may be a little more open to it? I am not sure as I do not know your family relationship but Id say its worth a shot. Especially given how much you think about it. :) Thanks for watching and be on the lookout for some more info vids too!

@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
+Corn Fed The accommodations will depend on you job title. Most cabins are shared with a roommate, but some people have their own with a window...or not. All shared cabins do not have windows so get ready for some amazing sleep! As far as some of the crew members not ever seeing the light of day, a lot of them do not have guest area privileges but there are crew areas with windows and an outdoor crew area as well. You may have to arrange with a drug store in one of the ports to get it refilled. Most of the US ports (Home ports) for the major cruise lines have a drug store close by. You can also speak with the medical staff and perhaps they can arrange to get shipments sent to them.

I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise 5 years ago and asked different crew members who had different jobs on the ship. The first person I asked was our maid, she was from a country in South America; she was sweet and pleasant to talk to. She did explain that she was at sea if I remember correctly she worked a month to a month and a half at a time. I asked if she missed her family and she did of course. The one benefit she said she had was use of the free internet as an employee but only when she was off duty. Another young girl who was a massage therapist said that if your a worker like me your stuck living in the bowels of the ship below the water line in a tiny room bunking with other people, no privacy. She explained that the people who were entertainers got treated far differently than the regular crew workers. They got to leave the ship on all the excursions, much better living conditions and pay was tremendously better. I did see the entertainers go on excursions with us and they seemed much happier than the rest of regular crew workers. The thing I noticed and have read elsewhere and that you don't see a lot of Americans working as crew members because it is believed that Americans don't have a strong enough work ethic. The crew members tend to be nicer to people of their own origin and was sometimes frustrating. Theres a lot I have forgotten and left out but if your considering working on a cruise ship as one employee said, think of it as a hotel you work at but cant leave for month to months at a time and you live in the basement with other people. Many I talked to said they would do this for a few more years regardless of the contract they signed. I remember when I was in Massage Therapy school recruiters came from a cruise ship line. I asked probably 10 very direct questions about the living conditions and what was expected of you. All I can say is the guys giving the presentation were remarkable how they danced around my questions and never giving a straight answer. Be careful if your considering this type of work; there are very strict contracts that you sign. One important thing before you decide to take a vacation on a cruise ship, make sure you do your homework in regards to the off board excursions. I asked friends of mine where to go and so forth so that we would be safe. My girlfriend at the time didnt listen and took advice from the cab driver as to which bar on the beach was the best to go to. This was in Cozumel. After we left she told me that one of the servers kept asking her he wanted to show her something; don't turn your back for very long! We learned later that day from one of the crew members that a girl was just recently given a roofalin and you can guess the rest; that bar was the one right next to us ten feet away. Plan your excursions carefully beforehand.

Hi John,Thank you for the video.Im really interested in entry level Jobs in a cruise ship.Im a Kenyan with 3 years experience of working as housekeeper in the middle east.How can I apply for the jobs?.
@JohnGleasonComedy10 жыл бұрын
Hello Saraphina! Thanks for watching and I am happy to help provide some more information to you. I actually just uploaded a video about the application process and where to look and its actually quite simple, just lots of options. So each cruise line has at the bottom of their website a link for Jobs. Once clicking on that link it will take you to the employment page which will be broken down into departments. Some of them are even broken down by country where you are applying from. There is also another web page allshipjobs.com which has job listings from many different sized cruise lines. Some cruise lines that may only be based over seas and not out of America. If you know which cruise line you would like to work out, check out their main web page and follow the links for employment. If you are not sure or it does not matter which cruise line you work for then that All Ship Jobs page may be a good start. With your housekeeping experience in the middle east, was that with a specific chain of hotels? Please let me know if you have any other questions and again, thanks for watching I hope I was able to help out. Even if it was just a little bit!

I'm a bartender and already deal with a bunch of this crap. I love it. This sounds like taking the dial and cranking it up to 11 though. I'm here for it, but I have a few questions. Generally, what were your ship's policies about having a drink after work to unwind? I like to do that. How about dating? On that note, how much do you really even get to hang out with your coworkers or guests outside the immediate job? Is there enough free time between shifts to do stuff like go to the gym, read, play my guitar etc. or was it like "I slept, now back to work"? How long did your contracts typically last? Could I do a 6 month or year stint then go "nah" or am I bound up for several years? Were bartenders on your ship usually tipped or salaried, and on average which was better? How much did a wifi or cell phone card typically cost onboard, and how much of a discount did employees get? How long were your stints between ports (it sounds like you were coastal, so I guess that really depends on the company), and your breaks before departure? Did you get any chances to actually see the areas you arrived at, or was it like "oh yay, another dock"? Just curious.

Questions I would have is do you have access to a gym for free or discount on the ship . How much is data on wifi on the boat , so you can at least read emails and use low bandwidth applications and do you get a free little cabin by yourself or do you need to share it with someone. Besides USA once a week do you turn up to other countries with free wifi/mobile data coverage ? Also whats the medical care like onboard does staff get free medical care ?
@JohnGleasonComedy6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the questions. The crew gym on board is free and if you have guest area privileges, you can use the guest gym when not busy. Wifi on the ship for crew members have various plans depending on the cruise line. I am only familiar with Carnival, but i have a video about it here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqLcYWRqq65nbrs Also, you will generally have a cabin with a room mate, but depending on your job some supervisor and management positions have their own cabin. Some cruise lines do not have any US ports as they would be based out of Europe, Asia etc. Medical coverage is there depending on the cruise line and you are limited to doctors only during your contract and when in ports of call.

That's great! Yes continue to look for as much information as you can, although only so much research can prepare you for what you will experience. Its a very good start though. Do you know what kind of position you are looking to do? Or at least which department? Those are some good starting points. Also while the degree will help, it will be the experience that will help more (at the start) :)

@JohnGleasonComedy8 жыл бұрын
Not so Simple. Ha, if you are an american citizen for example you need to wait until you are back at the home port to be sent home. If they do fire you in a foreign port (from your home country) you will have a certain amount of time to get to the airport and go home. Only a small window until visa's and what not expire and you can get arrested.

Thanks for posting. My son (age 17) is seriously considering a career in the cruise line industry. After He graduates high school this year, he is going to community college for 2 years to earn an associates degree in mathmatics then he plans to enlist as an officer candidate in the United States Navy where he hopes to study navigation and be a navigator on a war ship. After he serves his country, he then hopes to get a job in the cruise ship industry as an officer working on the bridge as a navigator with hopes of climbing the ranks. We go on a cruise very year (perhaps why he wants to work in the cruise industry as a career) but we keep telling him working on a ship is a lot different then being a passenger as he is used to. We keep explaining to him that working on a ship is NOT an 8 hour work day then he can go for a swim in the pool, relax on deck, or enjoy a show. We also explained many areas are also off limits to the crew unless you are working/assigned there but he still would not listen to/believe us. Your video really put a lot of things in prospective for him to think about. Thanks for posting.

Maybe a small desk and a TV. With a roommate, its a bunk bed, 2 cabinets/closets and a bathroom....desk and tv. Not huge, but it works! I have a video here on my channel titled my walk to work. Hi man I am about to go and work on a Royal Caribbean Ship in California. I live in East EU so I will have to fly all the way to California I just want to know, this working ever day thing, sound horrible, is it really that way? no human can do that without passing out. Is it really that way? or because of shifts, you get to have more hours free for yourself because today I work during day and tomorrow I start working at 23 at night so I have the whole day free tomorrow. The same I would like to know where's the salary paid? account or cash?
@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
E I N S Hey thanks for watching and congrats on the job! Its totally an amazing experience but its all what you make of it. What kind of work will you be doing onboard? So the whole working everyday thing is not as bad as you think, its more like you work a shift that could be anything from 8-11 hours every day. That shift may also be broken in 2 parts, one for morning and one for evening. If it is a port of call day, you may not have to start work until after back on board time....so you may work shorter hours that day. BUt days at sea you will have a much longer day. Naps and coffee will become your friend for Sea days, but the other days you work with all the same people who pretty much become your family so its not so bad. Again, its what you make of it. If you come in and start hating everything, there is no escape from it. As for pay, being from the east EU you will probably set up some sort of crew card or crew account (which works like direct deposit.) When i first started they paid your bonuses in cash and that was nice....until you had to go back home and fill out a customs form. Even for a US Citizen like myself....it was not fun to have to claim extra money. Luckily banks have gotten more advanced here so i could deposit the cash to my account before heading home. Let me know if you have any more questions! I would be happy to help!
@Jack_The_Ripper_Here9 жыл бұрын
John Gleason Thanks for the reply John. I will be working in the Food & Baverage Department. I asked about the salary because some guys said they were being paid cash and I don't know what to think anymore if it's either cash or card. Anyway I will find out when I get there, you are right with the border control though. When you work on a ship, for what country you work? Is there a work permit for a country whatever that is? or it's a different law for people working on ships and basically you don't work for any country. They give me a transit viza to get from the airport to the ship I was just wondering for whom will I be working. USA? Bahamas? France? and so on... I don't find these answers anywhere people don't seem to be interested in what I am interested in. I think it's important to know and to be briefed in advance. Thank you John
@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
E I N S Hey man of course! So regarding who and where you work. It would all be based on where the home office of the cruise line would be based out of. I know for example Carnival is in Miami Florida, so i was working as a Florida Employee and paid some of the Florida Taxes. The weird part for me at least is as an American we pay our Social Security and City and State taxes out of our pay check, but working on a ship they never really too much of those taxes out (Social security not at all) because of the weird Land/Sea job base. It was ok, but when i did my tax return, my return was not as nice. With you and the Viza situation, a bunch of my friends would get an extension on their when they sign off so they can stay in the states for a mini vacation for a couple of days. Its sometimes a bit extra leg work for simple things due to this line of work. You cant just do anything without having to have an ID or fill out some form or wear a badge. But, where else will you get paid to travel the world and work with people from over 55 different countries. That my friend, is worth it. Any other questions you have please let me know! I will try and brief you with as much info as possible. It will definitely help with the first couple of days on board.

John Gleason Thanks man, what do you know about my VISA C1D? they changed my ship i will now leave from Sweeden --> Islanda --> Canada --> USA. Will i be able to get down in Canada or USA and visit? i don't have a Canada VISA but i see that my ship goes even in Russia and Canada. C1D is a transit crew member visa, can i vist with it? how does it work? people going on a cruise, the passengers have VISAs for all the countries they visit?
@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
E I N S I know when the ships were based out of one of the States all the foreign staff had an I9 they had to carry in the US ports. Any other port they would have their Cruise ship ID...which would work as a all in one pass. Over seas, you would have your passport, but the Staff Admin hangs onto it for your entire contract and your cruise ship ID Card will work for all ports. With the port of Dubrovnik Croatia, since it was not part of the EU all guests needed to have their PASS PORT ontop of their room keys and photo ID's. Crew on the ships only need their ID CARD. Its like a one stop shop.

@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
+Theng Hew All jobs will have a time to get off the ship. For anything spa related there are companies that are hired by the cruise line to employ all the spa staff. You pretty much work at a spa, but at sea and would be busy and filling up with appointments all day. They also encourage you to sell the products they offer so you would need to work as a sales person of sorts too. If you enjoy doing it, it would be great....and you would get to travel too!

Thanks John, it's not for me. seems like they treat the crew like 2nd class citizens. I'm used to getting special treatment as a musician not less. I suggest y'all start a union and strike. every musician should have a private room with a view, be able to use all the amenities, and make good money too. That's how I'm treated on shore/land. why should a boat be any different. all the best to those who have no choice but to do what they say! make a union!
@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
+larryjohnny yeah it is interesting, but the only performers that get any special treatment and have their own cabins would be the Singers, Fly on Entertainers and soloists. Might not be a rooms with a view, but your own cabin is well worth it. Only because of the location of the crew cabins....gotta save the views for the guests. A benefit to the musicians on board, especially the soloists....you get paid to travel and you have a new audience of 3000 + people that change every couple of days. I dont think someone who is already set in the industry would work on a ship, its a good launch pad. Help them get a feel and some experience and sell some CDs. :)

Oh boy, stress. I'm not one who could handle stress well although I can if needed. I worked in a preschool, I know stress. Currently looking into working in a children's area of a cruise ship so I can tell, that will be like the stress of working in the preschool but amplified times ten. Although I'm not the best when it comes to stress, I enjoy it. It's weird, I guess I like that it gives me a more interesting story to tell because I love sharing my experiences & it gives some interest in the day. A stress free day is super boring. John: Curiosity killed the cat. What happens when you have a world wide celebrity joining your cruise and lets say he/she is gonna perform while on sea. Technically this celebrity will be working but, does this celebrity stay in an employee cabin or do they have special cabins specially made for these celebrities and when it comes to meal times, is there a special crew member that kind of leaches/assigned to onto the celebrity and brings him/her anything wanted without the celebrity being hounded for autographs in the public areas?
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
All i can tell you is in my experience, they would be in suites or regular guest cabins....and meal times would either be room service or they would have a special time/location to eat away from the guests. Some of them mingle and hang out, cause by a certain point people would be used to them being around for a couple of days.

What about being active, like working out or exploring the gym area? is it possible to be active on the ship, or will i have to work out in my cabin? this is actually my response on the question what you like doing in your free time, i would love to take a walk and explore or as i said stay active?
@JohnGleasonComedy9 жыл бұрын
+Extra Zafro Yes of course! so there is a crew gym, and a guest gym. If you have guest area privileges then you may use the guest area gym when it is not busy. There will be plenty of walking and being on your feet. THey say every crew member may loose about 10 pounds a contract just from being active and eating the food provided. But as far as being active in a work out sense, you will need to use the gyms. Or you can go for a walk or run in the ports too when you have off. I would get most of my work out running around the ship all day and then dancing at the various dance parties throughout the cruise.
