I BROUGHT THIS TRUCK TO THE SHOP HOPING IT WAS A QUICK REAR BRAKE JOB AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE......WELL THAT DIDNT HAPPEN AND SINCE I AM SPENDING MORE THAN I HOPED, I FIGURED LET ADD SOME VALUE IN ITS APPEARANCE WHILE WE ARE AT IT. I WAS HOPING TO DO THIS IN ONE VIDEO BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE AT LEAST 2 AND MAYBE MORE.

You're a braver man than I am working with no jack stands especially leaving it like that.
@yetisdeuce1315

True. Although, as long as you are not under the truck, it's not really a huge danger. I don't drag out jackstands for brake jobs or tire rotations...but I sure will if I'm going under the truck for fluid changes or such.
@DoRC
@DoRC 5 жыл бұрын
@@yetisdeuce1315 that's ok in theory but it's too easy to get distracted or to forget it's not on stands and poke your head under to look at something etc. Or worse what if a sudden emergency came up like your kid or coworker got hurt and you left the vehicle without thinking to add stands, then some idiot boy comes walking along, crawls under the car and kicks the jack handle accidentally? It literally take under a minute to add stands (you don't even need to fully remove the jack) why risk it? I've been a mechanic for 20 years and have seen cars fall off of jacks. It's sudden, violent and leaves very little time to react.

As said before in other comments, I really like videos like this. Thanks for showing and explaining. I was told to stay away from changing disc brakes on bigger trucks that it was a nightmare. I see nothing even remotely nightmarish. Thanks for all you do Sir.

That's going to make someone a sweet work truck. Plenty of life left in it and built like a tank. A plus it's under CDL weight cap, so it can become a ""gentleman's" ride if desired...lol Great video format JC, showing the problems and the repair work. In its other life, someone spent some serious time redoing that body, and didn't spare the coin on the steel. Hope you get it buttoned up, built to your standards and a buyer sees the value! It’s hard to keep a truck clean if you get inside with dirty hands and clothes. I like a Cat engine more. That’s a nice little Freightliner. Brake work can usually take a turn on you. That’s the 1st time I’ve seen disk brakes on a big truck..like the looks but seems to involve more work when changing the brakes. That would make a nice work truck.

Our local business (kinda like a fastenal) they make brake hoses and a/c hoses. Working on a Ford tractor and ford wanted $3xx for two brake hoses (idk why it has a brake system that uses brake fluid instead of a hydraulic fluid system) but they made both for $100 like 4ft long each. Then figured out the clutch line leaked also. $50 to get it made. All 3 master cylinders used the same reservoir that only held like 3 ounces of fluid. So if your clutch line blew you wouldn't have brakes vice versa. Lol

I see them with a steel wheel on the inside & aluminum wheel on the outside down here a lot...l forgot to mention on the other video when l got a tire won't let go of the bead l put a little gasoline (let it find it's way around) & go on to the next one while the gas gets some time to work in then come back...that bed looks too good to cut into to me but it's your business & your call...what did they do - drive with the parking brake on (l saw the heat signatures)...you got a pretty good controlled swing with that sledge hammer (better than me) might want to give golf a try - your short game should be good & that's what wins...drive for show - putt for dough
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 5 жыл бұрын
the parking brake is on the back of the transmission. this truck sat a lot. rust seemed to be the cause of this problem. i hate to cut into that bed too but it would be so much more useful with a gooseneck ball. if i do cut into it, i will have to make it va ery neat and clean job. i do the same thing with tires but using soap. i like to soap them all and come back to them. never understood gulf.....hit the ball as far as you can and then chase it...its not for me.

You sure put a lot of work into some of those trucks. You put a lot of attention into what matters like brakes and running gear, tires etc..... I didn't know you could polish big truck rims like that. What does the machine use? Is it bead blasted or brushes of some kind? I would have thought new rims were more expensive that 200.00 each. Have to save where you can. NAPA and the web are your friends.........
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 5 жыл бұрын
it is like a flapper wheel only the ends are rounded. they start with the most abrasive disc and work their way down to the least abrasive (depending on how bad the rim is). then they go to polishing discs. some need more than i hope but it is what it is.....i will try to "create value" somewhere else to help make up for it.

For a broken tap you might consider finding a wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) shop nearby. That's what they do and depending on your shop, it can be a pretty reasonable cost.

@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 5 жыл бұрын
the brake hoses need to be there. as the brake pads wear the caliper will need to move. a solid line would break. you may be thinking of a rear hydraulic drum brake system.
