Pt 10. Shoemaking... Heel Counter and Toe Puff

I am making a pair of shoes in the traditional way, and in this video I am making the heel counters and toe puffs, these are stiffeners that give body to the shoe. Making these components calls for careful skiving....thinning the leather at the edges.

As I get into this I certainly have the appetite to try some more...maybe a simpler shoe next time on a commercial last....and when I get confident, some Russian hatch leather shoes!

Hi it was around 2.5mm from memory, I think I give an exact thickness in the video.

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I make moccasins 4 Ren faire, my favorite leather is Bison, on my stiffeners I install a small piece of Elk directly in the back, seems 2 B better than one piece

Hi, want to ask a question here. So I've got this leather shoes with hard toe, but the very tip of is is somehow got softened and I cant put waxed polish on it because the polish will cracked. Any idea how to fix that softened part?
