Zed, your videos are phenomenal. I really love the long format, sorely missing in this age of tictoc attention spans. The amount of information and insight is exactly perfect. Thank you.

Hi Paul, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching, I really mean that. I know these long format videos are not for everybody, but I try to focus on capturing real skills with as much information as I possibly can. Stay blessed my friend ~Peace~

Enjoyed your series so far. Like the detail. I bought several carving knife blades from Nic several years ago at the Harogate show. It's nice to see the process of how they were made. Cheers. Jim

@Zed Outdoors Thankyou so much for for this video series. As a (Nic) tool user, time served mechanical engineer, Sir Nic makes phenomenal tools. Thanks for giving us a look into his mind. And the, “Sir” comes from me. Not the lower class King/Royal place. It’s from a higher standard.

👌 WOW 😂 I've been Blacksmith hobbyist for 5 years and just advice from Facebook friends and websites and loads of youtube. I'm just taking in loads of DIY Best video on temple and how to set up in a low cost but very efficient shop for tempting. I did a tiny knife with bearing steel and had horrible results holding an edge .Seems I'll retry that bearing steel I'm being told to use 01 USA steel. I believe I'll be testing a head to head before my full set of knives will be made. Interesting Thanks to you both

Great video Zed and Nic. Did i miss what steel Nic uses and what Rockwell hardness he gets his blades to?

I talk about the steel in part 1, 1/4" bearing. I'm not sure if I do specifically mention hardness in later videos it's not something green woodworkers are often that interested in. I would generally expect a reading of 61-62 on my production blades after tempering.

@nicwestermann4206 oh 52100, that is great steel. I'm only an amateur green woodworker, but have an affinity for knives, was curious why forged sloyd knives rarely had steel type or the hrc. Now I'm curious why green woodworkers don't ask about steel type or hardness 🤷

@@feralcruz2093I guess because it doesn't actually make as much difference as people make out, the only real difference is frequency of sharpening. It was always bushcrafters that used to ask me about HT and I found they were the people that were less likely to actually use their knives compared to someone that carves regularly.

@nicwestermann4206 I hear you, I don't know any bushcrafters personally, but I know the type that just talks about hypothetical situations. Frequency of sharpening includes edge stability, but I would imagine 52100 at 61-62 would have a stable edge. I've had some issues with the mora 106 edge deforming while cutting irregular grain in some Norway maple I was carving. Looking for an upgrade and of course your knives are highly prized, looks like it's time to get on the waiting list...
