Yep. 99.9% of the time you won’t need it but that 0.1% chance could kill you. If she’s asleep for another 10 minutes and doesn’t hear you scream when falling off there’s almost no chance she would find you. Probably would have no idea where/when you fell off.

Step 1, invest in some safety harnesses and some auto-inflating life vests. Anytime youre on watch in those conditions, please tether to the boat.
@sgw71482 жыл бұрын
I’m an old sailor, but retired due to age and disease. Please don’t take this wrong, but you guys need to remember your safety please. I noticed in this clip especially where one of you was reeling in a fish by yourself with no life jacket and no harness to tie you to the boat. If you fell in it could be disastrous. The boat could move along fairly quickly and it would be difficult to find you.

Yup, that was a breakdown. Good job Nathalie catching it...lol. Congrats on crossing the Gulf Stream and entering the Gulf of Mexico. Sascha, I'm pretty well desensitized to you holding the big reel upside down, but you can't argue with success. Bringing fish onboard is bringing fish onboard no matter how you hold the gear.

Oh that mischievous grin at 26:58. I actually LOL'd here all alone ! You guys did a rockin job! BTW, don't seal off the overflow tube from the radiator. Redirect it into a container so the cooling system doesn't over pressure and destroy something expensive. Then when the eng cools down after a run, pour that coolant back into the radiator. You can keep doing this forever and no harm will come.

Nice sailing and nice fish. Here's a tip for using a multiplier reel on a rod. Its the easy way trust me. Hold the rod in your left hand. Put the rod butt in your groin or into a groin pad strapped around your waist. Have the multiplier reel upper most. Reel with your right hand and pump the rod with your left hand. Not sure why you are doing it the hardest possible way. You were lucky those mahi mahi were only 4 Lbs and not 40.

I’m so glad this ended on such a positive note, some things happen for a reason. I have a feeling that you can either find a manual to purchase or find one online to download. I know it will probably make you feel better & more secure to go longer distances. It helped me with traveling alone pulling horses with a diesel. Another good thing is if Diesel Don has a guy that can machine parts for you, right now there’s big problems with parts for any Mercedes diesels, mostly Commercial parts.....so you’ve made some great contacts too. Glad you made it and happily too!

I've mentioned this to others. A great answer to "situational awareness anxiety" Put a PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) camera on top of your mast. You view it from your phone. You can see clearances, great horizon views and with the IR (infrared) you can see in total darkness. See what's around you, you could even dock at night. I use a SV3C but there are many out there

It was a hell of a ride you took us on! Glad to see the motor issue wasn't a major repair.. I would definitely get that heat exchanger tested out. Those have been known to fail after 10 years, never mind 35. Didn't enjoy the meltdown, but a good nights sleep helps a lot.. I'm sure you have the motor all taken care of by now.. Spare parts! You might need to update your H2O make.. Outboards.. Flush out those gas tanks! Make sure there is no sediment or water in them and replace the gas caps on the tanks.. Get them looked at by qualified outboard mechanics.. New motors break down too.. Be safe! Looking forward to S3:E1!

With breakdown there is break through and here you are at home.There will be breakdown of engine components and other equipment. That's a great engine, but component parts wear out. To contemplate a long trek with that old of equipment is a risk. Spare parts and tech learning will be a must. Good job landing the fish. Not the best form (reel upside down) but you got the fish in. I felt the content was on point. The video showed how frustrating, emotional and challenging sailing can be. We all learned something from the watching this. @gordonclark17113 жыл бұрын
When things go wrong I look at the building blocks that surround the problem and try to eliminate each area, one at a time. Being tired or hungry doesn't help because you cannot think clearly. Another thing with not being able to locate a fault is to walk away from the problem for 10-20 minutes (if possible) to rest and clear your mind. If the fault is in the stern go to the bow...get away from it otherwise you will keep looking at it and thinking. Spend too long looking for a fault and getting nowhere then as sure as eggs is eggs you will go off at a tangent looking everywhere but at the cause of the fault. I have found and corrected more awkward faults by taking a break away from the problem than you could shake a stick at. 20 years as a photocopier technician and still sane when I packed it in.

I would never give back my time living on my boat with my wife. But here is the financial lesson I learned. Bought a boat for 50k cost about 36k over the five years between insurance, maintenance, and dockage/mooring. Eventually sold the boat for 48k. Bought two houses. One house basically pays for the other and have gone up substantially. Owning two house. Cheaper than owning one boat. And they generate income and provide a tax shelter. But you can’t put a price on a good time. Godspeed.

I heard your comments aobut your outboards. Old Mercury motors should only be used for boat anchors. It's the gapless plugs that are the issue. You need to carry boxes of new plugs and change them very often with the used ones going into the ocean. Advise? Get Yamahas!

If you girls are concerned about the age/reliability of your engine, you might be able to find someone that will work with you on rebuilding the engine. Not do it for you, but teach you as you rebuild it yourselves. That process will teach you how to repair most problems you may run into over a longer voyage. They will also be able to give you a list of parts you might want to have on board that are typical for repairs. Don't feel overwhelmed at the thought of rebuilding the engine. If you find the right person that is willing to teach/assist you it isn't as difficult as you expect and much cheaper than hiring a shop to do it for you.
