Worst car I've ever had. Ok list of problems. Clutch went out drivers side window motor went out twice. Batteries only last 2 years at very most. Heater went out ac went out. Then you've to periodically adjust the clutch pedal adjustment and the bushings go out cause there cheap plastic. Also ball bearings went out. And all the other stuoid maintenance crap you need to do all the time. I hate this car.

That’s great to hear! Just so you know since this video was a while ago now. The gray car my mom was driving at the beginning of the video she passed on to me brother who has used it for a commuter car ever since and more than doubled the mileage that was on it without any significant problems. The gold car I bought in the video worked out excellent, it was only suffering from a bad wiring repair a prior mechanic had done on it, once that was sorted it was a rock solid reliable car for us all winter, I sold it the following spring to a very happy new owner and moved on to a turbo convertible which I still have and has been completely trouble free for me. I’ve actually used that convertible for the last two winters to clear snow on my large acreage where my shop is, I literally have a 400 pound snow blade hanging off the front and it handles it no problem. My mom moved onto a turbo charged special edition dream Cruiser, she did a 9000 mile cross-country trip in it right after she bought it, never even had to pop the hood! Hope you enjoy your new PT cruiser as much as we enjoy ours!👌😎

You mentioned at 11:00 in the video that if the idle drops and the car starts to vibrate, it could be that the cooling fan is not kicking on. Do you have a video showing how to diagnose/repair that? I think that's what is happening to my '05. I've been to a couple different repair shops and no one can diagnose this problem for me because it doesn't seem to happen when they test drive it. Also, I really like your videos. I've had my '05 since it was new, and I intend to keep driving it until the transmission gives out. Good video. I've got two PTs, both '01s, one I bought new and the other I got a year ago. Regarding rust, here's my experience (I'm in a rust prone area). Pull the plastic fender liners, front & rear (rear side of front and front side of rear), crud builds up behind them. Clean out the crud and give a good spray with Fluid Film or your favorite rust preventative. If you're feeling ambitious, pull the door panels, clean out the crud and spray the bottom inside with rust preventative. You can also pull the tail lights (very easy) and spritz some rust preventative in there. Regarding the oil pressure sensor. I went round & round with aftermarket oil pressure sensors on a Neon (same part). I ended up installing one I got from the dealer, it cost more, but was worth it. Regarding the manual transmission, if it goes wonky, the first thing to check are the shifter bushings. The manual shifting is controlled by two cables, with bushings at both ends. I had some issues with those, it got weird and wouldn't shift into reverse, gave me a good scare. The bushings are actually easy to service. There's shifter bushings at the shifter under the console and bushings at the transmission (top side, kind of under the electrical distribution box under the hood. Get Booger Bushings.

Matt, When you got under the front, behind the wheel, it brought back nightmares. I had a 2001 PT that was rusted bad enough to cause the "K" frame to break. When I was removing it, I ripped the rear control arm bushing bolt out of it's little cage inside the unibody. If you have to take that bolt out, be sure to oil the threads of the bolt from the inside. You can access the threads from under the hood. Get a good light on it and get your aim just right and you'll hit the threads. Work the bolt out slowly, and when it starts to drag on the rust, screw it back in and relube. You don't want to seize up the threads and break that little cage loose. I did it, and that's when the nightmares started. The bolt is really hard and nearly impossible to drill out. I was able to salvage the captive nut, but I had to buy a 16 mm tap to clean it up. Then I had to build a captive cage for the nut, and weld it to an elliptically shaped plug because the nut has to float around inside the unibody so the "K" frame can be aligned. I put the elliptically shaped plug into the hole I had cut into the unibody and when I thought I had the plug and bolt in the exact place where the factory would have had it, I welded it into place. When I went to install the "K" frame, the bolt was misaligned enough so that it would not start in the threads. I had to drop the "K" frame about four inches from the unibody before I could get enough play in the holes to get the bolt to start. I got it, but all I can say is be careful. That bolt is unprotected inside the unibody and salt will rust it.

I have a 2007 and got it for dirt cheap. $375 . The body is in Excellent condition the reason I got this vehicle so cheap was . The bushing for the transmission shaft that your shifter cable attaches to was almost completely seized . It would not go into park hence the car would not start. I soaked the shaft and bushing with penetrating oil and worked it free over the course of a few days . Once I got the car running the oil light came on .it was full of oil it was the oil sensor had failed oil passes through the sensor into the connector shorting it out causing a false oil light. $20 fix for the sensor. My head lights and signal lights as well as my rear wiper started to act up intermittently. It was fuse box under the hood which is also called the Tipm . Got a used one from the auto wreckers for $27 it fixed my issues of one head light and one signal light on opposite sides intermittently working as well as the rear wiper . Also check the two ground studs on the inner fender mine were really corroded. I believe that was causing some of my weak charging and hard slow rolling starting .

You mentioned the shaded gauges. This is especially a problem when you wear sunglasses. At first I spent ten dollars and put in some mini-lights powered by a cord from the cigarette lighter. However, after I had driven the car for a while I began to know pretty much what my speed was without looking at the gauge based on engine sound and of course, since it was a daily driver, I kept pace with traffic. So I removed the lights, but I still have the car, 122k, 2004, so I might install some more permanent lights...I put in a new radio and a woofer, so I have been introduced to how to power things.

However, on this particular car it was actually a poor wiring repair on the crank position sensor that was causing the intermittent no start issue that the prior owners experienced. I fixed that and also cleaned up all the ground points and it was a really good car for the time that I owned it.

I have a 2001 LE. No rust at all, and 250,000 miles on the ticker. Runs real good, and it's reliable. Just a couple of dings, and a dying paint job. If it wasn't so much work, I'd drop a 318, or a 340, and convert to RWD. Other than some minor leaks, no tranny issues.

Took it to a shop i regret Dealing with, but 5 months and over 1200 dollars later it was back on the road. 2 months after that it laid down again and is still down. I think its the timing belt. Alan Hoggard I find the ‘03-‘05 the best, the first few years had some issues they sorted out + the ugly grey bumper covers I don’t like. In ‘06 they completely changed the electrical system and they are known to be more problematic as a result. I’ve heard they had thrust bearing issues on some early ones of that redesign too. I also don’t like the appearance as much. They aren’t all bad, there’s a few things on the newer ones I prefer and in reality any year of PT can still be a decent car, I just personally find ‘03-‘05 to be the sweet spot.

Hey Matt, I recently bought a 2004 GT 5 speed in Florida with only 67k miles but it only came with one ignition key, so I need to make spare keys. It came without keyless entry FOBS as well. When I replaced the factory radio with an aftermarket, I didn't see a wireless module behind the A/C panel, which I expected to see there. My questions are 1) what's the cheapest way to make a replacement ignition key, and 2) am I mistaken with respect to keyless entry module location? I bought an aftermakret kit for keyless entry but now I'm wondering it it doesn't make more sense to get whatever factory hardware up and running as I can buy two key blanks and two Chrysler FOB clones for less than $20 on eBay. Your PT vids have been host helpful in rehabbing this classic beast! Thanks!

I've actually been real tempted to get a Cruiser GT (convertible) I had a lil '05 Neon a couple years back and I kinda miss it, but it had numerous electrical issues. Ended up selling it and I still see it driving around town here and there. Gotta have at least 200k miles on it by now, lol.
@CarswithNash6 жыл бұрын
Dev The Neon & PT actually have very little in common, you will find a PT more fun for spirited driving, especially a GT. I currently own a ‘00 Neon, it is my 3rd Neon & I actually had an ‘05 myself years ago. I have honestly never had any sorta electrical issues with a Neon or a PT, both have been very reliable cars for me. I would be more concerned with the condition of the engine & turbo on a GT, all those parts are unique to the turbo model, as well they have unique suspension & brakes, the parts are generally harder to source & more expensive so it is even more important that you check it carefully before purchase. Be sure you floor it, they do 0-60 in 7seconds, so if it’s not slamming you back in the seat there is an issue, the turbos typically wear out prior to the engine & are around $1000 so that is important that it is still making boost & giving full power. This is not to discourage you, the turbo engine is a great setup, forged internals & all, they can be tuned to much higher then stock power without an ill effects, it is just like any fast car though, they have more of a tendency to be abused.

GT is the way to go. I got lucky with an auction at CoPart, got a 25,000 mile GT for $525. Didn't need significant repairs, so I brought it home and put it on the road. Good thing too because my Abarth broke down soon after and now I have wheels until I finish fixing the Abarth.

Alvin Brinson Wow that is a score! I think I recall your post on the group, it got some moisture in it so they listed it as a flood but it was dry & ran flawless when you got it if I recall? I was actually looking for one when I bought this car because I thought it would be nice to have that turbo related content but they are hard to find cheap also. If I could find a clean low mile one like you did I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Thomas Blow ‘03 up I’ve found, but by this time a lot of the common issues on the earlier ones have been dealt with too. 2 questions for you. 1 Can I use the turbo intake on a na engine? 2 Can I put the transmission cooler on a 2001 Limited? I enjoy your videos
@CarswithNash5 жыл бұрын
drridge1 I have never tried putting a turbo intake on a non turbo, I know the gaskets are the same as long as it’s a plastic manifold, the early aluminum ones use a different style gasket but would provably fit also. I don’t think you’d see any sort of advantage. I do believe the throttle body inlet is larger so you’d need to overcome that also. You can certainly add a transmission cooler, it’s a good idea, you should just order one for an ‘03+ PT, they fit in the lower grill and it’s just two hoses to hook up. You will probably need some 5/16 oil cooler hose also. Be sure to just hook that directly to the transmission, bypass the in radiator cooler altogether, they are just trouble. Sorry for my delay, I’m working very long hours and I’ve been too involved in that to stay on top of getting back to everyone.

Other issues so far with just under 60,000 miles has been a timing belt and kit replacement(Expensive), CPU car computer brain, front end wheel assembly, front wheel bearing, new Radiator fan from overheating, back shocks from clunking sound, front disc wheels, and pads mostly from rust. He doesn't want me to lose my low mileage investment
@CarswithNash2 жыл бұрын
Wow he must’ve really smoked you to do that kind of damage! The A/C bog issue is super easy, you just replace the cooling fan motor, you can get just a motor for around $60. Oh and the tail lights are kind of a crappy design and they often come loose, leak etc. I would probably trust the timing belt till you see the water pump start to leak at that age that will be the first thing to show a sign or an oil leak and then you can go in there and do it all. Normally if they break they don’t damage anything anyways, there is a slight chance of valve to valve contact but 90% of the time that doesn’t happen. I would say fix it if you can.

@@CarswithNash when he jumped back in, instead of brakes. He gassed it. The ram bar on the front of his explorer did the damage. I ordered one taillight, it came day before cop hit me. Do you think 2 new taillights will stop the moisture from getting inside? I noticed after a rain, there was water at the bottom of the taillight.

@@CarswithNash I also appreciate you replying so fast. Made me feel better about the timing belt. I didn't want to put $4000 In work, just for the timing belt to go shortly asfter. The car really runs great, I changed the control arm bushings, flushed the PS system, changed the motor mount that is next to the wheel well.

@@Tylerc3419 Exactly, the tail lights start to leak water between the lense and the backing so if you just replace them problem solved. Just be careful not to over tighten, but also make sure it is tight enough to hold it in place firmly and centre it up in the hole… It’s not unheard of for them to come out on a hard bump.

So I just got one today, a 2006 model. This is my first car, and a pretty decent one at that. It has a few issues from the windshield wiper fluid tube being broken and the fact that the hood doesn't stay up on it's own and doesn't have a prop to hold it up, to having to unplug the battery to prevent it draining overnight, and a few more issues. Nothing that really makes it difficult to drive. It has just over 90k miles and was only $800 from some people my grandma knows.

Nathan yer boi Is it actually the tube or is the fitting broke off the bottom of the squirter nozzle? They get brittle from the engine heat so it’s pretty common for them to break, they just clip in real easy. The hood prop should be easy to get from any salvage yard. The battery drain could be a faulty ignition switch or the hatch switch. Sounds like a bunch of little things but with that low of mileage it should be worth fixing up.

Nathan yer boi I did this video a while ago showing how to perform a parasitic draw test on a PT, that might help you pinpoint your battery drain issue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHrWpIulh6tggrs

@@CarswithNash thanks for the tips. The tube itself is broken, that seems like a cheap and easy replace though.

Big deal I bought one last week for $300 it's a 2007 the only problem was only 1st gear was working but after cleaning all transmission connections all gears work fine so I would say that's a steal
@CarswithNash4 жыл бұрын
Ivan Guillen That is a steal, although I prefer the earlier body style and this turned out to be a great car.

Hello Matt, I have changed the water pump, thermostat, coolant temperature sensor, radiator cap, bled the radiator, and it will still go to the third line of being hot. Do you have any further suggestions? Thank you
@CarswithNash2 жыл бұрын
When you say you bled the radiator, did you have the bleeder valve open as you filled the system? Some people mistakenly think you should fill the system and then open that to bleed out the air, but actually that is not how it works, that needs to be open as you fill so that the air is released as the coolant goes in. Opening after the fact may or may not get the air out depending where the bubble is if it moved to another part of the system you can still be totally air locked. Is the fan kicking on? Also as you’re filling that last part of the system after it comes up to the bleeder and you close the bleeder again you need to squeeze the elbow were the upper hose goes into the radiator, there will always be air trapped there you need to squeeze it out. I do have a video showing all this where I also replaced the thermostat and stuff, look in the playlist, it’s there.

Wish I could offer you some advice on that one but I honestly have no idea, I’m surprised those two circuits are even connected.
