Mallikarjun Mansur (31 December 1910 - 12 September 1992) was an Indian classical singer from Karnataka, an excellent vocalist in the khyal style in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana (singing style).[1]

Early life and background
Mallikarjun was born on New Year's Eve of 1910, at Mansur, a village five kilometres west of Dharwad, Karnataka.His father, Bheemaraayappa, was the village headman,a farmer by occupation and an ardent lover and patron of music. He had four brothers and three sisters. His elder brother Basavaraj owned a theatre troupe, and thus at age nine Mallikarjun did a small role in a play.[4]
Spotting the talent in his son, Mallikarjun's father engaged him to a travelling Yakshagana (Kannada theatre) troupe. The owner of this troupe took a liking to the tender and melodious voice of Mallikarjun and encouraged him to sing different types of compositions during the drama-performances. Hearing one such performance, he was picked up by Appaya Swamy under whom he had his initial training in Carnatic music. Sometime later, he was introduced to Hindustani music under Nilkanth Bua Alurmath of Miraj who belonged to the Gwalior gharana. The latter brought him to Alladiya Khan (1855-1946), the stalwart and the then patriarch of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, in the late 1920s, who referred him to his elder son, Manji Khan. Following Manji Khan's untimely death, he came under the tutelage of Manji Khan's younger brother Bhurji Khan. This grooming under Bhurji Khan had the most important influence on his style of singing.

Such stalwarts belong to the entire country. If Bhimsen Joshi had not spread his wings and gone to Maharashtra, I seriously doubt he would have got the recognition he got. Artistes go where they get patronage. It is narrow minded ness to claim he is from “our state”. (I am from Karnataka).

Bhimsen has mentioned (at 0:40 mark) that he had completed 70, which he did in Feb-1992. Mansur completed 81, and started running 82-nd, in December 1991, and he died in Sept-1992. In April 1992 he had visited Delhi, then Mumbai, and then he sang briefly in Pune on 1992-04-12 to commemorate Bhaskar-buwa Bakhale's institute's some milestone. This program was probably organized around 10-april-1992 in Mumbai, or the weekend before that.

What could I say about Pt Mansoor? I am too small to say anything about him.. But I have heard his music since I was 13-14 years old. I am now 70 years myself. One can not express the depth and grandeur of Mansoor-ji's music in mere words, words can not do justice to his music. In contrast to his music, the music that is in vogue today happens to be heavy with 'chamatkruti' (flashiness). Leaving one's own tradition, one's own parampara, by imitating others, by hook or crook, people today vie for claps and appreciation. It has become a new tradition now and this is my personal opinion. All these years I have been listening to Mansoor-ji's music and once thing I must mention is that he never let any blemish get to his music. He learnt from the first Guru Nilkanthbuwa and there are records from that time: Gaud Malhar, Chhaya-nat, Kedar etc. Later he went on to master the style of Jaipur gharana. And throughout this entire journey over years, he has never sacrificed the beauty of his music for popularity gimmics. This is his special virtue. When a singer is young, it is possible to get influenced by other singers and other styles of music. But Mansoor buwa has kept all such influences aside with care and kept his own music pristine, pure. You will realize that value even at this age of Mansoor buwa. My sincere thanks to the gentlemen and, if there any any, ladies too who organized this occasion today. We are very close to each other. On a side note, that is due to our roots in Karnataka. People from Karnataka are rather stubborn by nature. Mansoor-ji has stubbornly refused to compromise the purity of his music. Come what may, I shall never leave my own stream! It is very rare to see this quality these days.. Today Pt Mansoor turns 82 and on this occasion we are all gathered here. My prayers to Paramatma that I should be invited to the centenary celebration of Pt Mansoor-ji and I should say a few words then.. And, not to forget, may you all be there too to enjoy!
