Have noticed on about all "air injection" saws, you can feel the air coming out seams and holes in/around top cover. Kinda felt adding vents was a waste of time and effort on air injection saws. Thanks for proving to us all that it is!

I think the air induction system is set up to maintain atmospheric pressure or slightly more to avoid a vacuum condition so the saw isn't fighting for air. In turn the system helps keep the air filter clean. I think this air induction system is why the saws that have this feature respond so well to simple basic port work along with a muffler mod or pipe.

This is very interesting. But air flow is just as important as air pressure. When it's clean cooler air that's already moving, it's a benefit. Sorta like ram air on a race car. It's pushing air but not building pressure. Great video and great content!

You have to think on a normal airbox in vehicle, there is a vacuum during hard acceleration inside the airbox. You not seeing that vacuum so it's surely at least equalizing ambient pressure to the air box during full load. Very cool.

Maybe not creating pressure but at least avoiding vacuum is still a big win for air induction

PSI is a lot more pressure than people think, an electric manometer set to measure inches of water column would be perfect setup. Your heater/central air system only runs with .5 inches WC of static pressure but it moves a lot of air!

Also there stated pressure might be differential pressure. Behind the carb is a negative pressure that sucks the fuel into the motor so if I was the marketing guy I’d be taking the differential pressure of that negative chamber vs a slightly positive outside pressure would definitely be a higher number!

Likely there is just enough diverted cooling air flow to provide cool air for the carb intake but not enough air flow there for measurable boost pressure. Some of the Stihls have a diverter for winter to preheat the intake air when it is too cold, which is an opposite effect. Both schemes are to optimize the temperature of the intake air flow. On older cars with carburetors, there was a heat riser from an exhaust shroud that had a thermostat operated butterfly to send hot air up to the intake horn on the air cleaner housing. Same idea. What is good in cold weather isn't helpful in hot weather and vice versa.

Can’t really expect a non sealed paddle fan to be a better air pump than the engine. And since the engine would be getting all it’s air from the same place, you can’t really expect boost. Heck an airplane with a cowled carburetor opening doesn’t really create boost at a 150mph. About the best you can do is just get cool fresh air. Which is why some prefer the air cleaner to be outside away from the heated air surrounding the engine. Take your pick, a slightly denser (maybe) charge of fresh air or a cleaner enclosed air filter. 🤷🏽‍♂️ But yeah, dang I wanted that to work as well. You have the tubing, mount the gauge on a separate stand close to the saw. 👍🏼

I would say the echo 7310 has a comparably good air filtration system to the 5 series husqy considering they are using the same system just tweaked a little.

Booboo - deeeeee you the man . A water manometer would show difference between atmasthereic pressure and under the intake cover pressure. A couple of inch pounds would made a difference.

As soon as the gauge failed I thought that a balloon would be a perfect vibration proof indicator.

Betcha it’s the gap between the fins and duct. As soon as there’s resistance, it just pushes out the gap. Remember this stuff is mass produced. It would take almost a 3d printer to fix this stuff up. 1, you’d probably need a better duct, 2 proper airtight sealing, 3 probably a better fan design but then you run into where to mount the magnets. 4 a better carb insulator. It’s a rabbit hole.

From what I understand the filtration systems use the centrifugal force from the flywheel to throw the particles out of the air before it gets to the filter. There is no pressure there never will be any. A turbo is a highly engineered piece of machinery that spins at 100,000+ RPM to create boost in a completely sealed system.
@dumorian1
@dumorian1 10 ай бұрын
Just a thought. Could 0 pressure in the air filter housing be a gain? I wonder if a vacuum forms in that area on saws without air injection? That would be a cool test. If so, that would be a turbo effect. Turbos change the intake from vacuum to pressure, or at least some reduction in the vacuum.

I often wonder if the air injection on these is diverting too much air from the cooling of the engine and if that’s why they are have issues with these 5 series saws running too hot

In order to produce pressure under that top cover it would have to have some sort of gasket or seal on top cover

Because I thought that what I did would work. I was wrong. Didn't want to hold it in my hand. But after the balloon failure, any further testing is pointless to me. It works, but is not boosted.

Hello Boedy! My theorie: The intake produces underpresure and this compensates the added airplus from the flywheel. It holds the balance while reving the engine. You could test it by using a saw without this system. This one should suck in the baloon if you seal the airbox. Maybe I'm wrong? What do You think? Regards, Wolfgang

I don't want to waste your time with other tests, but someone told me that with low pressure, you need a hose of at least 8mm, preferably short, I'm going to look for a mini turbo...😅

It’s an air cleaning thing, the air injection/ turbo uses the fan to spin the fines out of the air coming in to keep it clean longer. Stihl also has their version of air injection now that the patents are done.

I’ve been mentally contemplating this a while now ju$t couldn’t do anything about it. To get max from the flywheel blower (via an OLD Myth Busters where they tried an inducted fan backpack helicopter) you’d have to close the gap from the fan blade tips to the duct, and off the top of my head, shim the back of the flywheel so it barely doesn’t touch the duct. Then, at some point you’re just going to have to go to 3d printing… fft, what if you removed every OTHER fin, so the scoop can scoop a larger …scoop of air and it still remain in balance? Or, why not just 3d engineer a terodial (so?) fan, but then you run into magnets and pickups.. but maybe just maybe the material is lighter and thus major gains just in the rotational mass being lighter. I’m too faT thumbed, dumb, and a.d.d for texting everything… then you gotta seal your box and 15 year tree guy and climber here (we just run running saws and buy bars when needed) not going into saws until recently, I didn’t even know there is a summer/ winter trap door on saws… so simply putting a cover on and screwing it down, don’t expect it to be positive air tight. This is a text and not an essay so I’m abbreviating/ poor grammar… but by then I need an a.d.d break and if my mind went to 3d printed fan/turbo parts, I wonder why someone just doesn’t make a closed port Partner jug thus eliminating this whole rabbit hole. I love your vids. You got me into how saws run and what they look like under the cover. I’ve NEVER seen a saw not running or go bad so all this time I didn’t think they ever existed. Now I’ve got 7 saws, bitten by the bug,,, I’ve given up on life, building hot rods and motorcycles and now, NO ONE to pay me for my equipment experience and hobby. Hell harbor freight has a nice little lathe for $700ish that’ll fit in my van/house. Can’t type the Gettysburg address so just a quick note I’m off. I’ll comment on other vids now I’m signed in. Chow. You rock man keep it up. Can’t edit so have to copy paste delete.

You didn’t set your engine and bar and chain combo to it’s perfect “tune” in the cut… and then you might possibly discover some “results” from your “test”… having that “potential” for the additional air volume needed to be started from the exact in the wood tune for your atmospheric condition at the time of the test… right?

No they didn't, Todd. Those are in front of the airbox. The airbox is a sealed unit. The hole you are talking about is above the cylinder to allow cylinder heat to escape. The airbox is still completely sealed.

I mean the whole high pressure air is such a dumb concept. All that extra pressure will also be under the piston working against us its a net zero. Unless I'm missing something. I suppose that could be fixet to some degree with transfer timing

I was actually thinking to open airbox on my 576xp but I guess not anymore! Even if ever so slight, any positive pressure will help.... Would simulate a freer flowing air filter or reduce the resistance to the engine and vacuum on the upstroke.... Either way you look at it it's flowing more air into the crankcase I guess.... Likes the experimentations!
