Love the content brotha. Im the ripe young age of 33 lol and finally deciding to go back to school to become a PTA. I dropped out of college after receiving my Associates degree over 10 years ago because I had no idea what I wanted to do.. I've been working as a personal trainer the past 5 years, which surprisingly had a lot of cross over with PT/rehab type work. Training hundreds of clients dealing with pain and trying to help them made me realize I wanted to go back to school and expand my knowledge in this field. Anyways, youre never too old to make a career change! this video helped a lot

Of course I have been there! I have been there throughout my entire academic career! From undergrad and even in DPT school. My biggest take on this is to focus on the end goal. thinking about how many people I will impact and being confident in my ability to do that. what you are learning now is directly going to impact those patients you will treat in the future. you got this my friend!

Currently 24 and have my degree in Exercise Science! I currently am a little intimidated to get into DPT school bc I didn’t do as great in my undergrad but the cost and outcome to becoming a PTA seems more and more my route and later on will definitely bridge into PT.
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
There are programs out there that will bridge from PTA to DPT and actually decently affordable to do so. If I could go back, I would really consider this route. But just because you didn’t do so great with your academics, you shouldn’t let it stop you from pursuing your dreams. You can always go back and boost your grades so you have a stronger application

The estimate for home health doesn't quite work out because we can't do all start of care evals- they take FOREVER in HH because you do OASIS assessments, but then they might reimburse about 150-200. But you want that mixed in with regular treatments otherwise you'll be wiped out.

I have just found your channel and I am really enjoying it! Just a note for prospective PTAs out there: I graduated this year in may and I am working PRN in acute care and at a SNF treating covid patients. I'm not sure if this is different due to my state practice act or my relationship with my PTs, but I have a large impact on what the POC includes once I start working with the patient. For instance, as long as I treat within the CPT codes my PT chooses (ther-ex, ther-act, gait training, etc.), I can choose any interventions I want without, for instance, asking my PT if I can change a certain exercise, add or remove exercises, change assistive devices, etc. I have never worked in OP since I was bored to tears in that setting, so it is possible that maybe things aren't as flexible/POCs aren't as broad compared to inpatient settings. Just a note I wanted to add. I don't want people to get the idea that being a PTA is being handed a sheet of interventions by your PT. Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more content from you!

College of the sequoias costs about 7,000 for the PTA program. Great benefit for cost. If i was younger, like 22, and straight out of undergrad, id go to college of the sequoias, pay the 7 grand, make money to pay off debt and get everything straight--maybe even invest and save for DPT school if it was something i still wanted, and do that. By the time id have gone to DPT school, I'd already have so much knowledge to draw from so it wouldnt be as stressful as it is for most DPT students. Now, if i could only get into a program that costs 40 grand, itd be a little tougher of a decision but again, if i was younger, id probably still go PTA route and go from there
@drjustinleedpt4 жыл бұрын
I would absolutely have to agree with you on this one! If I had known this outcome, I would have totally went PTA route and bridged over to DPT or even just used my PTA to merge into fitness, which is another passion of mine. Where are you at on your PT journey?

@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
I think you should consider what you wanna do for your future. It sort of sucks because becoming a PTA only requires an associates degree. So if you finish your bachelors, you are overqualified for this. And the next step is to go to doctorate school to become a DPT. If you are almost done, or at least more than halfway finished with your undergraduate degree, and you know you want to get into physical therapy for certain, I would recommend that you go all the way and get a doctorate of physical therapy
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
@Isabella Zerpa I think those are great self reflective insights and things you should consider if you want to go down this road. If you feel like your personality would match being a PTA, and if you feel like you would live a fulfilled life, then I say go for it! PTA is an honorable profession and I don’t think they should be looked as any different vs dpt

@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
I would call and ask the community college and the private programs to see what they would recommend. To my knowledge, a PTA is an associates degree so to get a kinesiology one then a PTA one would be overkill. Also, commuting 1.5 hours is a lot but if you only go 3x a week it might be worth it (worth it considering cost of schooling). You should call and ask what the curriculum asks for

I'm almost done with my associates degree so should I consider doing pta or continue on a dpt path ?
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
You are still at a place where you can go PTA and then bridge over to DPT. If I could go back and do everything all over again, I would go down this path

What’s the “competitive” part about going to a community college for PTA license ?
@Jin-hh8gi2 жыл бұрын
From my experience school had 23 spots and 200-300 candidates apply every year.

Weird questions but do PTAS have to clean up poop ? Thx to anyone that responds
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
Not a weird question! Lol I would say if a patient pooped themselves and you were there to help, I think it would be honorable to serve and help the patient out at that time. Technically it’s not “our job” but you can go above and beyond for the patient. I had a time when this happened to be in the hospital and I had to wipe poop

Yes, you’re right! I was corrected earlier about this and I will be sure to make this correction in the future! Thank you for your feedback. Are you currently working as a physical therapist assistant right now? If so, which setting are you working

@@drjustinleedpt I'm in my last clinical rotation in WA state, studying to take my licensure exam in April :) My instructors hounded us about making sure we did not make this title mistake throughout the past two years of schooling! It's their biggest pet peeve that has passed onto us also now! haha I like your channel, thank you for sharing your experiences and interviews.

@@amberolsen0109 ahhhhh!! I had no idea it was such a THING!!! If I had known I would have for sure made an intentional effort to say it correctly. Thank you so much for that. And thank you!!!!! I really appreciate it. I love having BOTH PTs and PTAs comment and give feedback. I’m here to support to in any way I can leading up to your license exam!
