In this episode, I set up an enclosure and rehouse my Pterinochilus murinus Tete.
Just a note, it is not "Species Tete." It's just P. murinus "Tete."

My first/only OBT just molted yesterday, absolutely love that spider. Holds a special place in my heart because when I originally housed her as a teeny tiny sling I didn’t notice the enclosure was defective and she escaped overnight. I tore apart my office (where I keep the slings) and somehow spotted a little brown dot scrunched against the ceiling. Sitting in my spider room now looking at a big beautiful orange spider is even more gratifying thinking how lucky I was to find her that day

Kevin McCurley of nerd reptiles had a great analogy about animals is cages and I think it works perfectly here. He said, "Imagine you are living in your home and one day Godzilla walks over and rips your roof off. He feeds you He gives you water, a great bed to sleep in. When he leaves you can feel him walking around. Some times he brings his friend King Kong to look at you. He may even pick you up and hold you. Now, Godzilla never ever hurts you. He's even nice.....but He's still GODZILLA!" No wonder our little guys drop a threat pose every so often. Great vid!

I've been using a similar analogy for years. When you put it that way, it's easy to understand why they might be upset. haha

This species really gets an unfair reputation in the hobby and I think honest representation like this is important for turning it around. They're amazing animals that just need an environment that makes them feel safe and diligence when you're working with them, which, in my experience, is the universal truth for old world and new worlds alike. Really hoping that someday I'll be able to bring one of the P. murinus dark color forms into the family. I appreciate that your videos don't fall into the clickbait trap that misrepresents tarantulas like this, nor do you ever antagonize your spiders like some people. Thanks a bunch Tom.

Hi Tom and Billie, hope you’re both well. Lovely new enclosure for your TBT. She/He is very pretty, the colours of her carapace are gorgeous, and on her legs too. When she went into her threat pose Billie was able to get pretty close with her camera, and showed the iridescent colours on the underside of the legs 😊😊 Thanks so much for sharing Tom! Take care, and have a wonderful new week ahead. 🕷️👌👌😊

She is gorgeous, and did so well throughout that rehousing, looking forward to seeing how she sets up home in her new castle. I have a huge soft spot for OBT's, much the same way as I have for giant guarding types of dog - They are often mis-understood and unfortunatly attract too many bonehead keepers, there is that video on KZbin of a guy. He had taken a dry bite from a H giga's, being such an intelligent guy he decided that that Old World venom was a fairy tale, and proceeded to film him self abusing his OBT into a bite to try to prove his 'theory'- it really took alot of provocation on the boneheads part before the poor spider felt it had no other option but to bite him. I'm thankful that spiders around the world have you in their corner. Thankyou for another fab video. Billy got some excellent footage as always xx

We have the a dire situation taking place here with XL bullys, our government really should have learnt that the Dangerous dogs act and banning specific breeds like they did with Pit Bulls just doesn't work, the people causing the problems dont care about any laws, so all it does in penalise good owners and lovely dogs. @@TomsBigSpiders

So great to see my favourite species! Thx 4 sharing Tom! And as I said in other comments, I m with you, they are Not as defensive as many people say. I keep them for many many years, breed them, and I have 13 adult females, some different color forms of them, No one is "aggressiv". The Point is, that they need room and hides to be calm. And yes, they like it warm! But, they are very hardy and tolerate low temperatures for a long time. By the way, I would like to show you my setups, I have figur out over the years, I keep them more "vertical"... Sad, that so many people in the hobby think, they are little demons. They look absolutly amazing! I m so happy that you like them too, and show them in your videos Tom. Have a great week and stay save. Greetings from germany, Chris 🤘

Hello from the states, Chris! I was hoping that you'd see this one! haha They really aren't, and I'm tired of folks making them out to be demons when it just comes down to their terrible keeping skills. It's not fair and turns many folks off of them. As for the setup, when she gets bigger, I'll give her something with more vertical space. I usually do that for mine. My old female had a "semi arboreal" setup with some extra room, ans she was calm as can be. As always, thank you so much for taking the time to comment! Have a great weekend!

I’ve absolutely fallen in love with P. murinus. Definitely a bucket list spider. That one is absolutely beautiful. I think that’s the fastest I’ve seen anyone’s spider settle back out of a threat pose too. From what I’ve seen in most videos, they’re extremely sensitive, shy spiders. Like you said, not “crazy monsters.” Mainly just misunderstood and sometimes handled a little too roughly for their sensitive nature. Not rushing to buy one: I feel like I’ll need a LOT more experience first. (My tiny Cyriocosmus sling startled me recently. Lol 🫣😂Definitely not ready for a real challenge yet!) But hopefully I’ll get to keep one someday. Idk. I think they’re probably worth the extra effort.

Hello! They are amazing spiders that don't deserve the bad rep they have. I've kept 7 of them, and I've had zero issues. Give them room to burrow and web, and they would much rather run and hide than fight. And they'll be around when you're ready! :)

Great video Tom, thank you for making a point of the fact she/he was only defensive when it was out and vulnerable, so many of these keepers love to poke and prod to get that kind of response, calling it aggression, puts people off keeping such beautiful and most of the time, when dealt with correctly, i wont say placid but, non confrontational spiders. I love Pterinochilus, and would love more, i have found my kigoma is probably a little more, ready for a fight than others ive kept but still a stunning T. Hope youre both keeping well 👍🏻

Hey Tom! Great video as always. I wanted to check with you and see if the gift I sent you had arrived? It shouldn't take 3 weeks even with snail mail... if it hasn't I'll assume it got lost and remake them! I love the colour forms of the OBTs since H. cafreriana fills the "orange spider" niche for me, but I love the darker colours of the P. murinus! What a beautiful lady you got there, I love threat poses because they are so impressive, but I always feel so bad when they do it cause I'm like aww buddy I'm not going to hurt you! What an incredible gold colour! Not many yellow spiders, I had no idea these guys were this colour! My mature male E. uatuman arrives next week and I have vacation at the end of the month so I will be pairing then. I am SO EXCITED! Hopefully all goes well. Never would have gotten to this point without you, Tom. Please be aware how much your videos, podcasts, and articles mean to us. Listening to your podcasts over and over make me all the more confident about the hobby and make me feel less and less like an imposter. Wanted to share my recent binge of horror movies with you (it's October! Best time of the year!) and I know you are also a horror fan. - Dagon: FANTASTIC quirky little movie with REALLY dark themes and disturbing imagery. You mentioned you grew up with Jaws so while this is not a shark movie I think it really plays on fears of the unknown and deep sea. HIGHLY recommend. - The Fog: I believe you mentioned this before but I could be confusing it with The Mist. Super creepy, good atmosphere, well shot. Super interesting story as well, not at all what I was expecting. - Ghost Ship: fantastic movie all around, the beginning is disturbing as heck and literally one of my worst nightmares is being lost at sea so that played really really well into my fear and just an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness as the crew turns on one another and there's literally no good solution to the problem faced. - The Void: Again not what I was expecting but super well done. I wish more emphasis was put on the cult itself instead of just the leader of the cult but wow this one was very creepy and the "monsters" were well done without being OVERdone if that makes sense. - Silent Hill: I'm sure you've seen it but if you haven't, def check it out! Really good adaptation of the first SH game and while it definitely took creative liberties, it still stuck enough to the original story IMO. Cybil was fantastic. - Case 39: SUPER CREEPY (the child actor was AMAZING and deserves a freaking Oscar for her performance!) - The Nun 2: Just came out, not as much of a fan of this one as the original because for some reason they DIDN'T USE THE THEME MUSIC FOR THE NUN! Which IMO is what made the Nun so scary in the first place! The creepy super deep music that has played with the demon nun's appearance since the Conjuring 2 was suspiciously absent and I feel it really took away from the movie overall, sadly, but still a really nice follow up. The ending was somewhat anticlimactic and ended too quickly; the beginning felt drawn out and weirdly paced but definitely still worth watching. - Smile: Fantastically done, basically the same premise as The Ring but a COMPLETELY separate movie. The first girl we meet has the creepiest smile ever and it's definitely worth watching and I bet you it will stick with ya! Hope to hear from ya soon, and hope my gift arrived safely, but do let me know if it didn't and I will remake them! Keep up the awesome work, Tom! - Charlotte

Oh, and the movies! Dagon is an old personal favorite of mine. It was based off of H.P. Lovecraft's "Shadow Over Innsmouth." I love both the story and movie. The original FOG is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch that several times a year. SILENT HILL was fantastic and quite underrated. CASE 39 was quite good, although I haven't watched it in years. THE VOID was a fantastic homage to the 80s rental days...such a great movie. Now, SMILE...hahaha I was very let down by it. I think that I was a victim of high expectations. As soon as I realized that it had the same plot as RING and dozens of other movies from that time, I kind of tuned out. It wasn't horrible, but I was very let down. I have to watch it again, though! You've got good tastes, buddy! haha

I currently have 3 P. murinus. They are awesome spiders. Definitely not "aggressive." They don't like being poked at a bunch but no one does! In my opinion they are very predictable. I'm a lot more worried about my psycho A. geniculata trying something uncool with me. She attacks everything that comes anywhere near her. I get threat poses even for filling up her water dish or pulling out a bolus. She won't move when touched with a paintbrush, she turns around and attacks it lol. I haven't had an OBT pull any crap like that... yet lol

Another great video of an absolutely beautiful species, I really appreciate how you make it clear she feels threatened when she threat postures, one of the many reasons i recommend your channel to my friends who ask about tarantulas. But as you say it’s a defensive pose not an aggressive one, I think some tarantula KZbinrs can get a bit silly and say things like “oh guys you see how angry she is at me now, she is waiting to bite” and it can be so harmful as it paints a picture of an aggressive animal that really can give you a nasty bite, I’ve always explained it to my relatives as ‘maybe you’re a friend, maybe you’re a threat, but they’re not interested in making friends, and they certainly don’t want to find out you’re a threat’ my Grans always said she agrees and she’s not much interested in making new friends either, lol. Most my family have said they didn’t really think of it that way, always just assumed they’re angry buggers for no reason

I've worked with animals my entire life, and I think that it's important to recognize how our behavior influences theirs. To say that they are "aggressive" just takes all the responsibility away from the keeper. This species in particular gets such a bad rep from folks who don't treat it with respect. Thank you so much for getting it! :)

When I poked it with a paintbrush to coax it into its new hide though, it gave me a threat pose. So mine essentially did the same as yours here, it only became defensive when it felt like it was out in the open and being messed with. It hasn't been defensive with feeding, or water changes at all so far, but it does have a strange habit. It will grab crickets, drag them down into its tunnels, and eat them upside down. Is this something you've seen before? Like, with any species? It doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with it, seems like just an odd quirk my particular spider has 😂 but I had to ask

I'm glad that you had a similar experience with yours! They aren't nearly as bad as some people like to make them out to be. :) And I HAVE had others that would eat their prey hanging from the top of their tunnels! haha It doesn't happen often, though. Thank you so much!

Great vid. OBTs are my absolute favourite. I have 3 rcf, 2 Kigoma dcf, 3 Mikumi dcf, 2 Botswana dcf, 1 tete bcf and a umv. Also have their cousins, 1 P. chordatus and 2 P. lugardi. Out of them all only the tete has given me a threat pose. I get more threat poses from my 2 inch B. hamorii which has an attitude issue 😂

@@TomsBigSpiders I was lucky seeing most of them available at the same time so went for it, received another rcf as a freebie with an order since so fingers crossed there'll be a female amongst the 4 of them! Have a great week
