Those look amazing definitely awesome species. Hey any chance you could do a video on top species without itchy hairs. 🤦‍♂️ just remembered that’s basically old world. But then what about pink toe species I’ve never had problems with their hairs. Is the any other new world species that don’t have those hairs urticating hairs🤷‍♂️? I know it’s off topic to the video but it’s just a thought. Wish you the best and hope you have a great day bud 🙋‍♂️✌️
@TomsBigSpiders

There are a few new world species that don't have them or don't kick them. Pink toes have hairs that they rub on you through direct contact. Ephebopus have them on their pedipalps. As for other species, it depends on the individual how badly the hairs will bother them. I can try to put something together!

Tom, more good stuff dude. I just picked up one of these in October (1/2" sling). It spend the first two weeks sitting on the surface, ignoring the starter burrow, and running away from all live prey. It scavenged just fine and after two weeks, finally used the starter burrow to make its home. Now it's over an inch and nearly ready for its first rehouse. I was worried about it for a bit at the start but it's settled in nicely and has become a favorite.

Tom, I've noticed some of your fossorials go into what seem to be dedicated fossorial enclosures--deep substrate, water dish, not much going on on the surface while others, this one included, go into "semi-fossorial" enclosures, exemplified by substrate that allows some burrowing, but not the extensive burrowing I've come to expect from a typical fossorial enclosure. Is this due to the issues you've had in the past with spiders burying themselves or just burrowing deep and not coming to the surface to eat? Or is there something about certain fossorials that make them more likely to accept and thrive in an enclosure where there burrows aren't ridiculously deep and extensive? Thanks in advance, Sir Tom, Godfather of the Modern American Tarantula Hobby. :D
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 7 ай бұрын
Hey, Brian! I think as time has gone one, I've realized that I need to give them a choice as to whether they are going to burrow or web. I now tend to give them something with a bit less substrate (still enough to burrow, but not as deeply) so that they can have room up top to web. I actually covered this in a recent podcast, if you haven't heard it. At least I think that I did...the last month has been a blur. haha

UGH I am so glad you posted this- I was literally going to post in a tarantula fb group after watching this asking whether anyone else had experience with their O sp "Quezon Blue" never burrowing. I've had my adult female for several months and she's properly set up but nothing. granted I keep a lot of my terrestrial/fossorial ts in very short storage containers (with a proper amount of substrate but only about enough room up top for them to go into 4x4 mode lmao). I FEEL like it makes them feel secure as if they're already in a burrow considering how little light that room gets during the day and that I don't turn on my spider room's light when I do maintenance late at night so they're mostly all out but she feels different for some reason 🥴. it's good to know that another in the genus tends to always be out tho 😅. oh btw! you were originally the person who brought these beautiful ts to my attention and I NEED one because I'm partly Filipino (also I adore orange spiders) 😂

@TomsBigSpiders

So, I used to mix it in all the time, but I switched to using shredded sphagnum moss for several years. I like that, with top soil especially, it allows the soil to better absorb moisture. And, it won't mold.

Hello Tom. Arctic dreamers rapture here. I listen to your podcast: "Is keeping tarantulas in captivety wrong" I could not finding it now, but i always ask the person, if the question arise, Do you eat hamburgers or eat fish? Yes the person says wondering? So you think it is wrong to keep tarantulas, but fuel the whole gruesome beefindustry or fish industry where stressed cows are constraind in filthy slaughrerhouses waiting for a cruel death or where fishpopulations are cought from the seas for already rich industries to get even richer! This us kind of a good argue!😊😊
