Train Simulator 2015 - Route Learning: Preston to Carlisle (Class 390 Pendolino)

Last week I got to step inside the drivers cabin once in a life time it's amazing I was just on the platform trainspotting and caught the driver at the right time

Great video as always. A few minor corrections if I may. The Grayrigg crash was about a couple of miles before the passing loops, not at them. Between Docker viaduct and the loops. Second, the northbound Shap gradient in 1 in 75, not 1 in 98 (which latter is Beattock I think). Third, what is labelled as Lowther viaduct, just before Penrith down goods loop, is in fact Eamont viaduct. The line crosses the Lowther about half a mile earlier (south), just after the M6 crossing at Clifton. Lowther joins Eamont about 1 mile to the east. Does anyone know why the limit at the summit is 80. It doesn't seem particularly bendy.

At 125 mph the time between the "Whistle Board" and the crossings is a few seconds. There was a "near miss" a few miles out on this video. This brings to mind a recent fatality on a farm track crossing, at a much lower speed, on the York to Scarborough line.

PTGRail No problem mate, if you take requests or suggestions. I would like to see a scenario video of a DB Schenker Class 60 on a heavy oil train in rush hour where there would be a lot of traffic and passenger trains overtaking the oil train at passing loops etc. I bet that would be a challenge for the Shap section of this route with all that weight the 60 would be pulling but you can choose any route you wish if you decide to make a video based on this suggestion mate :). Great video, moderately realistic with the Armstrong Powerhouse Class 90 freight set at the start, nice touch! In real life the Class 390 is usually formed of eleven coaches and doesn't call at any stations between Preston and Carlisle with the odd exception of Lancaster on some trains. The usual journey would be London Euston - Warrington Bank Quay - Wigan North Western - Preston - Carlisle and Glasgow Central.

Thanks. I added the freight to make it look better! I think that some 390s are 11 and some are 9 coaches? As for the timetable and the stops - I used the real life timetable of train 1S87, the 1657 London Euston to Glasgow Central service. Departing Preston at 19:16 it is scheduled to call at Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle. I will be taking up this service again for the continuation to Glasgow calling at Lockerbie, Motherwell and Glasgow Central. I specifically chose this service for the stopping pattern. :)

Actually I catch this train all the time because used to live on Carlisle and it usually has 9 carriages and it stops at Lancaster, oxenholme, and Penrith before Carlisle.

The Pendolino’s stop at Lancaster 95% of the time. If they stop in Oxenholme then they don’t stop in Penrith apart from the odd exemptions a few times a day. There was once a service - head code 1M82 I think - that did London Euston to Glasgow Central stopping at nowhere apart from Preston.

In terms of lag, this route is much better than the Trent Valley. If you can play Trent Valley okay, you can definitely play this one okay! :)

@@PTGRail That's surprising it seems that the Trent Valley route is very well behaved on my PC but other routes that are bigger downloads or longer routes like WCML North tend to crash more or require 64-bit to be able to drive the whole way. I would've thought that this route needed more memory (as it is something like 90 miles).

As this route is based in the 1970s (though with dual speed limits for both modern tilting trains and older trains) it comes with a BR blue Class 87, and also a Class 47. You can purchase the Pendolino separately. The route and train are both available on Steam.

Just a comment to what you said about maintaining the speed of the Train. When you have reach about 1mph before the assigned Speed if you Press C it will stop the train from Accelerating past that speed. if you are going downhill and notice that the train is starting to pick up speed decelerate and then leave the Train in Idle till the train speed goes down.

Hi i have just found the solution, you need to go into where you select the locomotive and you will see a custom button with a spanner you then need to create a consist and the Virgin livery appears when you select the electric locomotive type. Just create how many carriages you need and put it together and then save. You will then see it in the locomotive page.

Why don't railways in Britain use a system like in Germany, where there is a guide book displaying all speed limits, station and signal locations? Drivers still have to learn the route, but they don't really have to learn it inside out like this, and even allows for driving without route knowledge (although this is a rare occurrence). It wouldn't even cost much. Nonetheless, this was interesting to watch, and you do a great commentary :)

PTGRail No problem :) if you are interested, look up EBuLa on wikipedia (no English page unfortunately, but hopefully google translate should be able to do it). Basically, every 200m or so there is a 'Hektometertafel' (Look at google images), which are fixed signs along the route displaying kilometers and hectometers, which the driver cross-references with his computer or physical book (normally they have both out), which has important features such as signals and stations listed, for example at km 49.5 there is a station. Each route has its own name, so there isn't confusion when looking at these signs, known as KBS (Kursbuchstrecke). Also, the markings are the same for both directions, so City A would start at 0,0 and City B would be at say 50,6. If you were driving from A to B, the Hektometertafel values would increase, and likewise starting from B, they would decrease until you arrive at A at 0,0. I hope that made sense ;P

In addition to Oxenholme Lake District on the West Coast Main Line, Kendal has its own station on the branch from Oxenholme to Windermere. It is planned to electrify the branch in the near future. By the way, the gradient up to Shap summit from Tebay is mainly at 1 in 75, not as stated in the video. In the days of steam this proved to be a taxing experience for heavy freights which had to be banked from Tebay.

PTGRail Yes, the train derailed after passing over the faulty leading crossover of the two at Lambrigg. The two crossovers were a throwback to the days when there was a signal box at Lambrigg. I understand that both crossovers have since been removed.

BigDuke6ixx I don't see how it would increase safety, especially at higher speeds. It may even compromise safety. You would still need a member of staff on the train too for safety reasons, and they could strike.

Computers are much better at mundane tasks like driving a train. Speed isn't an issue because automated systems have much faster reactions times than humans. The person pushing the sandwich trolley can be trained in basic safety procedures.
