PTO Clutch Replacement

In this video I replace the electric PTO clutch that is responsible for engaging the blades on a 2008 Hustler Sport zero turn lawnmower. The process would be similar to many other zero turns as well. A quick, simple, money saving repair.

For the screw that goes centered of the pto into the crank was it threaded clockwise or counter clockwise

FWIW, looking at the surface rust on the shaft, it appears that the old clutch may have been stuck and required a bit of persuasion to get it to slide off, before you slip the new clutch into place, put some Never Seize on the shaft, it'll make it much easier the next time you have to remove it.

one thing you need to remember is that when you remove the old clutch looked to see if there is a spacer because you will need to put that back on with the new one,if you don't you will have problems with the belt lining up properly.

As everyone knows, the hard part of any task like this (when you've never done it before) is the actually removal and reinstallation process. You skipped over that part and just said "after lots of off camera manipulation". Well, that's the part I needed to see. I have the bolt out, but it's sized up. I'm sure there's a trick, but it would have been helpful if you had shown that part. Basically, this video just shows a before and after picture of a clutch removal. Sorry, but just not helpful.

Thank you for the vid. So my clutch is fine I just need to replace the transmission drive belt. I finally got the bolt out but for the life of me I can't get the clutch to drop off the drive shaft. How did you manage and do you think it's okay to give the thing a few whacks with a rubber mallet to maybe jar it loose. Thanks.

I think if you were careful you would be ok. The worry would be in gap in the clutch, mine was non adjustable so if you were to knock it out of tolerance it may not function properly. Others I have seen have three little adjustment screws, if it is adjustable I would feel a little safer banging on it a bit. You still have to be able to check the gap though to adjust it though and the gaps we are talking about are in the thousandths of an inch like 12,000ths or so.

Do yourself a favor for the future. Use some anti-seize on the shaft so they don’t rust together and become one.

The clutch on my Cub Cadet 1525 came off easily with an impact wrench - I doubt I could have gotten it with a wrench. And then it just falls right off. Putting it back on was easy until you get to that part about holding the shaft with Chan-nel-locks, because the Cub Cadet shaft is near impossible to reach. It's going to have to be impact for this install.

I Have a cub cadet rzt that started disengaging and now it wont engage,if I move the right handle bar just right it trys to engage and goes back out.Any ideas where to start troubleshooting?I checked the pto for continuity and it is good so I am thinking it is the pto or safety switches.Any Suggestions will be grateful.

Well you could check for power at the plug on the clutch when it is engaged. If its not getting power when you engage it could be a safety or the switch. If it is getting power but not engaging I would assume the clutch is bad.

I was able to remove mine with the impact but when I torqued it back on I found a spot on the shaft I could hold with large channel lock. You could try that.

If the clutch is bad and being replaced smack it with a hammer, if it is still good try light tapping with a rubber mallet. The danger is hitting too hard and knocking it out of tolerance. Some clutches are adjustable mine was not.

A air impact did the job for me, otherwise you will have to find a way to stop the engine from turning. When I torqued the bolt to put it back together I used a large channel lock.

I found a large vice-grip would keep the shaft from spinning and I could then loosen the bolt.

On my mower there is a area on the shaft that I can hold with a channel lock, that is what I used to torque the nut at the end.

@@jdherring8445 If you are using a ratchet you will need to find a way to hold the crank or the pulley like I did with the channel lock towards the end of the video when I torked the pulley back on.

First thing I would do is test for power at the clutch, it could also be the switch or one of the safeties.

@@MasterofNone2 I fixed it. Found a small section of wire on the harness section worn through with only about 3 strands of wire still intact. Cut at bad spot and added new wire to gjve added length for more flexibility around the mower frame. I have mowed 3 times since without issue.

@@MasterofNone2 Thanks. I did the same with car ramps. Metered the windings. Good. Bypassed all wiring and connectors with two wires and touched to battery terminals. Clutch Engaged. So all good there. Could not find schematics for a steering wheel model so followed one wire to a relay. Unplugged, cleaned terminals. Worked a few times. Disconnected relay and tapped it on my workbench over and over to free, shake carbon off burnt or stuck reed switches. It's worked fine for 2 weeks. Found a replacement relay on eBay. Due here from China in a week or so. Thanks for this video, it got me started on troubleshooting this clutch issue and saved me money too.

Working on a clutch replacement on our Dixie Chopper. The clutch looks to be in good condition but when you pull up the PTO switch, the blades do not engage.

Check if the clutch gets power when you engage it, there are a series of safties that have to happen before the clutch will power up too, seat, control handles position ect. Make sure those are working. If there is power to the clutch and it's still not engaging it could be faulty.

You did not give details as to how to torque the new pto. How did you lock the shaft from spinning to attain 50 lbs foot?

On my mower there is a place on the shaft it could be held with a large wrench , I used a big channel lock.

I don't understand how wet/heavy grass would cause this problem. I just went through this, and yes, this spring has been VERY wet, and my grass is thick. And, yes, my PTO clutch failed. What are we supposed to do? Not mow when its wet and long? I don't "get" how the PTO clutch is susceptible to failure after mowing long/wet grass.

Hi Wayne, sorry you had this problem. Nothing worse than already being behind on the mowing and having a breakdown. When the grass is dry your mower the blades don't just cut the grass but push air around the Inside of the deck blowing the grass out. If the grass is wet it wants to stick to the deck instead. This cloggs things up causing wear and tear on your mower.

@@WayneHarris yes Wayne, the shaft comes out of the engine and has a pully that powers the drive wheels. Below that you have a pto clutch, the clutch allows you have another pully that doesn't have to spin just because the engine is running. It has a break and electric magnets that either engage the pully for the blades or disengage and break the blades. The tolerances in the clutch for it to do this are in the thousands of an inch. The wet grass clogs the deck not allowing the blades to spin freely forcing the blades to slow down. This can cause the belt to slip or can cause the contact areas in the clutch to slip ruining the clutch.

I hope you didnt use red threadlocker on that small pulley bolt😂 I would just use new bolt and torque properly, just in case you need to remove that pulley in the future for any reason😂

Thanks for the video! Good content and instruction. I’m trying to remove my clutch to replace the drive belt and do some other maintenance while I’m in there. The problem with mine is I can’t seems to break the bolt loose that holds the clutch in place. Mine has a huge washer behind it with 2 flat sides. I don’t have a wrench big enough to take it off. It’s a really weird configuration. The mower that I have is a Cub Cadet Super LT1050. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Are you using an impact? If not your going to have to have a way to stop the crank from turning while you loosen the bolt.

Master of None The day after I sent that msg to you I bought and higher torque impact driver and it came off!!!! Never could get that engine pulley off after taking the clutch off. I wanted to put some lubrication on that part of the shaft for future maintenance. Side note. I also removed the two idler pulleys that are clustered close to the “bracket assembly idle arm” located on the drive belt. The pulley in question is the one that is NOT attached to the bracket. It’s the V pulley furthest to the right of you if you are facing the front of the mower with the front end up. I figured since I have it open change those too since the mower is about 13 years old. The problem is I’m trying to figure out should there be a nut on the other end of the through bolt that goes through the V-pulley? When I removed the bolt it was threaded directly into the frame sheetmetal. It is acting as a threaded nut of sorts. Also on the backside of the pulley there was a washer that slipped off of course I can’t find it. The washer was laying flush against the bearing surface on the pulley. I’m not sure if it was a split washer, lock washer but I’m fairly certain it was just a flat washer. Any suggestions? Oh and I also used a telescopic magnet to feel around there for the lost washer but no luck. Thanks again!!!! Wealth of knowledge!!!!

There are large flat washers on top off all the pulleys on my deck, they stop you from tightening the bolt directly on to a bearing. You want those to spin as freely as possible Good job on all the preventive maintenance Clark here's to your mower lasting another 13 years.

Is the impact spinning the engine? I know on mine there was a spot on the shaft I could grab with a channel lock, used it to stop it spinning when I tourqed it down.

I'm a cub dealer we use blue lock tight and run the bolt up on 2 with a numatic air impact and then bump it on 3, we also grease the shaft before putting the new one on and that piece of angle iron on this dudes mower isn't for the clutch to bang on he needed it to be in the groove, this guy probably ripped his wires out, if you don't know take it to a dealer

If you are replacing the clutch and don't have to worry about knocking it out of adjustment go ahead and give it a few wacks with a mallet and it should come off.
