In case you didn’t know already, that fluid level is supposed to be checked with the 3pt hitch all the way down and the tractor idling according to my Deere people

Ah ok good to know, I did not know that with the 3pt!

I have a 1966 JD 2510 as well. I changed out the fluid as well. I want to say it took 11 gallons. Nice round number lol. My tractor has over 10,000 hours and still going strong. Nice job on the video.

Only put 7-8 back in, I figured it won’t take the full 11 but 7-8 doesn’t seem like enough.

You didn't show how to install the filter gasket.

After draining the fluid and changing the filter I would have checked and cleaned the sump screen. Always interesting things in there

Oh that is a good point, I did not think of that. Reminds me of many years ago, my Grandpa has a problem with the hydraulics on the tractor, couldn’t figure out why there wasn’t much pressure/flow, sent it into John Deere they replaced the pump, didn’t help; sent it back turns out like you said the sump was partially plugged.

And yes the pump and all the lines still will needs fill and the filter and the PTO gears will need to be refilled so yes it holds a lot of stuff , crazy ain't it so much, the new jd don't hold that much well the bigger 1 dew but yes a lot! You will have to check it a lot of times. Just about every time you run it. If it was working you would only have to check a few times but yours is just hanging out so , gewd job o :)

I figure as long as you don't see any "spots" under the tractor no need to check fluids.

Wow Randy, I'm the first to comment. Changing those seals out went a whole lot easier than I thought. Didn't realize the PTO shaft slides out so easily. That certainly helps. Hopefully the new seal won't leak on you despite the wear on the PTO shaft. I usually put hydraulic fluid in the filter before reinstalling it just so it gets some good lubrication in there before running the hydraulics. Once the hydraulic system powers up, it should charge the filter chamber completely with hydraulic fluid.

Yes, finally a job that went according to plan! This tractor has stub shafts for 500 & 1000 RPMs. I thought about trying to get some fluid in the filter, but being horizontal I wasn’t sure how well that work.

@@radozeman Its a little messy with the filter being horizontal, but if you work fast enough to get the filter back into the tractor quickly, its not too bad. I have changed a few of these out myself.

How different would this job be on a 1967 John Deere 3020 Diesel? I have been hunting for a 4020 but these are getting crazy expensive in Europe, instead bought a 3020 two weeks ago which are cheaper but still hard to find in Europe. Tractor will be delivered this saturday and will first start to do the standard maintenance. Battery's and battery boxes are already waiting..

As far as I know the 2510 has a 3020 rear end so it should be the same.

I bet it wouldn’t leak if you repainted that seat bracket... 👀

I am absolutely sure that I have never seen Hydraulic Fluid that color before. Water and dirt I am guessing. That is some OLD Fluid! Also, Hydraulic Fluid doesn't have any "Slickness" to it, I hope you lubed up the gaskets, seals and O-Rings wherever you could. If that shaft does leak a wee bit, I wouldn't bother buying a new one. There are ways around it. Just a little bit of time and effort. 12 hrs of waiting is all and some sanding...lol

Oh I’m sure the fluid is old! Other than the color I thought it looked good, at least for cleanness, actually a bit surprised I didn’t see any actual water, this tractor always used to sit outside. Which possibly is what wrecked the engine initially.
