@@The_John_Galt It is worth noting that this only applies to the K model, not the larger PTR 9CT, which doesn't need the 80degree locking piece and uses the normal bolt in either case. My PTR 9KT runs 100% with at least 1,000 rounds through it. I like it because: 1) runs great; 2) comes with accessories that cost extra elsewhere (picatinny rail for braces, rail for sights, pelican-like case, sear ready if you are ever so fortunate); 3) lifetime warranty; 4) very accurate (but I think they all are). Only negative for me is that the front rail is a gray/ash color rather than a black that matches the frame. I am glad that PTR did the work to manufacture this...and will be nice when PSA has their clone out as well.

Why you would sell a firearm with suppressor mounts that can't handle it is beyond me.

Metal stamping is an interesting method of manufacturing. Once the tooling has been dialed-in, parts can be produced very quickly (some mechanical presses can hit 200+ parts per minute). The issue with stamping is that the tooling is very expensive, like you mentioned in the video. It is not uncommon for die sets to cost over $80,000, and that die set is specific to the part it was made for. If any alterations need to be made, the die set has to be redesigned, or maybe even scrapped and rebuilt from the ground up. This also takes over a year in some cases, which is where a significant portion of the cost comes from. Aside from that, the press used to run the die set can cost upwards of $500k depending on the size and tonnage required, plus rigging the press in the manufacturer's facility. Most press manufacturers went out of business after laser/plasma/waterjet machines came into popularity because there was very little start-up cost once you had the machine. Also, alterations consisted of simply changing the cnc program (for example, if a hole needed to be moved 1/4"). However, a lot of manufacturers have come to the realization that l/p/w machines are much slower in production, and therefore are more costly compared to stamping in the long run. Not to mention, they cannot bend, form, or coin material like a die set can. Most of these points also apply to milling billet parts. One more factor of these processes is that there are some geometries you can get with stamping/metal forming that are not practical to machine with a cnc mill. I think mp5 recievers are a good example. I am a tool designer at a small shop here in the midwest, where we make tooling and also stamp parts for companies like Aero Race Wheels (we were featured in an episode of "How It's Made" a few years ago). We see a lot of cool projects come through the door, and it's a lot of fun seeing projects go from a conceptual design on a CAD file, to a finished part that you can see and hold in your hand.

stampings are cheap if you are making hundreds of thousands. The set-up cost is high, but the part cost is low. Milling aluminium has minimal tooling, so low set-up cost. The part cost is higher, but you dont need to amortize the cost of the tooling over the production run, so the finished article is cheaper*. Edited to add ... *cheaper when the number of items produced is low.

Initial G3 production for PTR was made with FMP (portugal) machinery and a lot of FMP parts, a former HK licensees. PTR is not an HK licensee like MKE (Turkey) or POF (pakistan), but in the semi-auto guns there are changes to the process anyway. PTR uses the shelf like HK did, while POF and MKE use pivot pin like full auto, but with other internal changes to block full auto. The 9mm was not made in the same way, but reverse engineered with development from the current US market of HK builders. The full size PTR9CT is made from full stampings with regular bolts/ heads, while the PTR9k is made from a cut down 9c stamping and some other changes to bolt head and stuff that are non-standard. The shorter K requires a different locking piece for suppressor use, but their off-spec bolt won't allow a real HK one to be used, so you're sort of screwed. I did see something about them changing design or offering a locking piece that would fit, but I have the C, so didn't follow it all.

The zenith is not sear ready. You have to remove the fa bolt block and install a fa bolt. This effectively marries the registered sear to the host, preventing the user from being able to legally swap the sear between hosts. The fa bolt block can't be legally removed without a transferable sear in it. This is as I understand it because it's an imported gun.

The rear sight is because its a pistol and the idea is that its easier to use. A MP5K with a stock will come with the standard drum rear you'd see on your hk94. Also the Zenith guns are not full auto ready. They have a semi auto carrier and have a block in the rear to prevent a full auto carrier from being installed. They advertised a service to make the guns sear ready but the atf put a stop to it(they can't just remove the rear block). Now in theory you could convert the front to a normal hk style semi shelf and then(and only after) remove the rear block making it identical to how others setup the guns for semi. Its worth saying as well people have been posting emails where PTR has said they will not warranty the guns if used as sear hosts(even though they are sear ready) and will also not warranty them if they were shot suppressed which is really stupid as most of the guns they sell have not one but two methods of mounting a suppressor.

I just got back from the range and rented this weapon and ran 250 rounds of high quality reloads without a single issue of any kind. I used the factory mags and the clear polymer mags. Zero issues.

HOW would you compare this with the Freedom Ordnance X-9, at roughly 1/3 the price, or the CMMG Banshee, at about $300 to $400 less?

Are ALL iterations of these HK Clones prone to having to physically strip the mags out? It seems obvious that the mags are decidedly NOT of the Drop-Free type. Just curious.

Been looking at zenith or ptr. American made just sold me. PTR it is.

This is super cool, wouldn't mind having one, but I'm personally more interested in the .223 roller locks. Hopefully those MKEs start coming back one day.

I dont remember exactly, but if my memory serves me well, JLD, which is what PTR was called before, got the blueprints and tooling from "Fábrica Militar de Braço de Prata" of Portugal

Tim, you did say that both the PTR and the Zenith would function as full auto hosts, correct? From your description of that clipped front, wouldn't that prevent it from engaging the front clip with a full auto trigger pack?
@thereturningshadow5 жыл бұрын
Actually there is some clarification to this. 1) PTR claims that even though it is a clipped and pinned lower trigger housing (the lower) a full auto trigger pack will work in their guns. I believe that is due to some full auto trigger packs having the shelf cut in the trigger pack housing. PLUS PTR comes with a full auto bolt carrier. 2) The muslim gun does NOT come with a full auto bolt carrier and you can NOT put one in until you remove the WELDED IN full auto carrier BLOCK. This is due to import laws. IT would cost you money for gunsmithing or for a high quality welder to remove that block first AND buying a full auto carrier in addition to the full auto trigger pack. Since the muslim gun is ACTUALLY $100-$300 more expensive at Atlantic, the PTR is a better choice. I do NOT own either gun nor do I work for PTR but I know quality when I seen and I see PTR being an all around better gun for various reasons.

Why are the flutes on the brass correct? Is it because of chamber pressures? I am just guessing.

Thank you for this video. I purchased one, but have yet to take ownership of it in the peoples republic of Maryland. Archaic laws that dont stop criminals stop me from bringing it home until a safety board approves it.

Why submachineguns aren't (at least as fair as i know) more popular among civilians, at least in urban areas? They looks nice for defense, and potentially have the same caliber of a personal pistols. May be lack of options, or cost similar to, say, an AR-15?

As I'm sure you know, MP5 rear sight apertures are not meant for different distances, rather different fields of vision. Elevation adjustments are made with a spanner after loosening the locking screw. Is it different for the MP5K and clones?
@xxCOKERxxPWNxx5 жыл бұрын
Im ready to see how that PSA mp5 turns out. I dont need a duty ready mp5 clone- I just want a fun retro toy that pays homage to a classic. However, if they turned out to not work well, I would consider a PTR - support American Business

I assume the price is mostly based on how much it costs to pay workers in the US. Minimum wage in California: $12 USD / hour Minimum wage in Turkey: $422 EUR / month ($2.9 USD / hour working 40 hour weeks)
