Watching people react to Pentatonix Hallelujah and now Sounds of Silence, is almost as emotional as listening to the songs! It’s so wonderful to see so many people have the same goosebumps, shivers and tears. Music does unite us all! I saw the Pentatonix live when they filled a 20,000 seat arena and everyone was so moved by their music. We need more music like this!

😂 LOL. Mitch has an incredible voice, no matter which part of his impressive range he’s singing in. His upper register is just so piercing and clear. 🤯 And sets him apart from the overwhelming majority of male singers (and female singers). But I’m more partial to his chest voice/lower register - maybe just because it isn’t featured as much, so it feels like a special treat when I hear it. But it’s also just so clear/pure and rich.

Diane Brown is right. Jase, your first PTX reaction was to Sound of Silence, and Scott started it off in his lower range--remember? You were impressed then with how deep HIS voice is, and all of us Pentaholics were sitting here thinking, "Wait till he hears Matt...and then, oh please please pleeeeeease, maybe he'll do some older Pentatonix songs and JUST YOU WAIT until he hears Avi!!!!" There's some argument, but I think Scott is the one with the widest range. But they're all totally ridiculously good.

This is probably the best opportunity to hear Kevin sing on a Pentatonix video. The little obbligato in the first verse, the diva notes in the wall of sound, and the lead in the final verse. Others will point to "Mary, Did You Know" or "The Evolution of Michael Jackson", but I really think that this is the definitive Kevin singing performance with Pentatonix. The placards in the middle of the song (and at the end) are icing on the cake.

Maybe live. This is a studio version and Avi is double tracked.
@eudaimonistic
@eudaimonistic 4 жыл бұрын
@@Orodroth I don't think so actually, if you're familiar with Scott's lower range you can actually hear Avi pass the bass line over to Scott in tempo. Scott has a somewhat brighter tone in his lower range, having to hit those notes with less chord length than Avi. I know they pass it off in live performances, but I'm pretty sure that's what happens in this studio recording too. In my opinion, it's a very Pentatonix thing about this arrangement.
@nadivkaspi6211
@nadivkaspi6211 4 жыл бұрын
@@eudaimonistic It is indisputably Avi's tone. I don't doubt Scott, he's more than capable of producing a full bass sound, but just use your ears. It's clearly Avi's voice. Its easier to record that way, since they just have Avi record the bass line for the entire song and then record his solo to layer on top afterwards. Also, think about this: Scott is still singing the word "Hallelujah" when the bass line comes in, and you can also hear that the bass line is sung by the same person from when it comes in all the way through the end of Avi's solo, so either Scott was doubled during his last "Hallelujah", or Avi was doubled during his solo. Either way doubling has to happen, and the bass line clearly sounds consistent and unchanging from before Avi's solo to after. It's Avi's voice.

For future reference: Scott: Baritone - covers bass parts occasionally & often harmonizes in tenor range. Mitch: Tenor/Counter-Tenor - often sings close harmony with Kirstin, has some whistle notes. Kevin: Beatbox/Classically trained cellist - sings tenor parts occasionally. Avi: Bass/Classically trained vocalist - can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor. Kirstin: Mezzo-soprano - has well-controlled whistle notes. Matt: Baritone - replaced Avi on bass, can sing leads & harmonies from bass through tenor.

Kevin who has perfect pitch said Avi has the unique ability to hear sound spaceing...he described it as he can hear where silence/sounds would fit in music. If you notice the newer music arranged without Avi is missing the silience your describing..it adds emotion & builds the music..( not that it still isn't amazing just different) I thought I was the only one noticing the perfect placement of the silence ...thought I was weird noticing how perfectly the absence of sound help & made the song better until I saw that interview with Kevin.

What makes that silence even more spectacular is that it follows the perfect resolve of a chord. Do many performers forget to hold the pivot note of the progression right through the final resolve, leaving feeling off kilter. The other trick these guys all use is to tune the pivot note as the chord changes, so the harmonics remain in tune. Then that moment of silence to let the perfect chord linger in the ear. Genius

I love when he does that. You actually already heard that in The Sound of Silence, but I know it's difficult to remember everything. Kevin (the beatboxer) is actually a tenor, so he has a higher vocal type. I see people in the comments recommending Imagine and I absolutely second that because not only everyone (including Kevin) have lead parts in there, it's a very moving video and a moving rendition of another amazing classic song.

In a live show Scott would take over the bass if the bass was taking a solo, but in a recording it is 99.99% of the time going to be the bass singer doubled under their own solo. Your reactions are *priceless;* and it’s actually a *JOY* to see how enthralled you are with their music. They are exceptionally talented because it’s not just their rich *voices* but how skilled they are at creating their *vocal arrangements.* I often *prefer* their covers over the original artists! Their new Home EP has “Break My Heart” on it-and I mean NO disrespect & NO offense to the talented young female artist who sings the original; but the depth, movement, rhythm, life & richness they give the song by layering and interspersing their 5 voices is simply beautiful, fun, effervescent, lively-and even more enjoyable! Check that one out & the HOME mash-up - both are superb! God bless!

I’m here in Sept. 2024!! They have to be in my opinion the best acapella group I’ve ever ever heard!! Scott and Avi both can do bass and I’m really sad that Avi left the group awhile back!? They covered that position real quick and he’s astronomical!!❤❤❤

The first time I heard this, it was my first time hearing Pentatonix. I was left speechless. I never really cared for Hallelujah, or at least not the overplayed Jeff Buckley version, but this version completely changed my mind on it. I still go to their video on it regularly. For a new artist/song reaction suggestion, I suggest looking up Dimash Kudaibergen. Look up his debut on a Chinese singing competition show singing S.O.S. he is from Kazakhstan and the video is a few years old now but a great intro to him. People all over the world agree he has the best voice in the world and he will blow your mind. You will quickly find yourself down the rabbit hole with his performances. Happy Easter!

They have a live version of this song on their channel from the Pentatonix Christmas Special. It really is all totally live, no effects! Also watch their Daft Punk Medley. If you want to be even more blown away by epic bass singing, listen to some of Avi’s solo stuff. His EP that recently came out is so spiritual and so moving, has this really nice folky, acoustic sound. Just let the lyrics wash over you, he has so much soul. Also, several years ago, Avi featured on a track by another acapella group called Home Free, who do country acapella. The track is a cover of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. The bass in HF can go lower than Avi! And the beatboxer, just OMG. HF’s beatboxer you quite literally don’t believe all those drum beats come from him. In their live shows the beatboxer does a drum solo for about 10 minutes while the others rest their voice. There are plenty of fan recorded videos of this floating around, the more recent the better coz he only improves with time!

If you ever can't believe they're really doing it with just their voices alone there's a video titled something like Pentatonix proves they don't need microphones. However it is full of spoilers for songs you have not heard them do yet. I would also like you to listen to two songs they do, Angels We Have Heard on High and Carol of the Bells.

I am loving your Pentatonix reactions. They really are something very special. You’ve gotten a ton of requests for them already so I want to recommend something related but also great in its own right: Home Free. They are a more country a cappella group but they are so good. I think a great one to react to is their cover of “Ring of Fire” (featuring Avi from Pentatonix). The arrangement is unique and fun and the combined bass of Avi and Tim will blow you away.

No, he wasn't. He would've in a live performance, but in the studio Avi is doubled on the solo and bass line. Just use your ears, you can clearly CLEARLY hear its Avi. It's kind of crazy just how many people believe Scott takes over the bass line but they can't hear its Avi's voice

As Avi sang, Scott will end up becoming the temporary bass, since he has an amazing voice not just for singing. Anyhow, I am so glad you choose to react to "Hallelujah". It truly was a gorgeous song. I am so glad you got to experience Pentatonix. I was blessed to see them on a rain soaked night on August 20, 2019 in Orange Beach, AL. The rain stopped for Rachel Platten (the opening act) and for the entirety of Pentatonix's performance (except the brief break). It started raining before the encore, and stopped just as they started singing "Hallelujah," and then toward the end it started again. It was like the heavens were weeping at the beauty of their performance. I didn't care one bit that I got soaked. It was an epic experience!
