This logo had me terrified as a kid! I remember plugging my ears and looking away when it came on. I always thought the "P" had Dead Eyes - when the black dot appeared it was like its dead eye opened up to look at you! And being the color blue made it look further dead. If that isn't bad enough, the music enters with a creepy surprise and ends on a cold, chilling chord.

The logo that scared me the most was the 70's-very early 80's Paramount logo with the mountain moving quickly to the center, coming from the left (moving right)-composer was Lalo Schifrin. I called that tv logo "The Big Noise". Did the same thing, ran to a corner of my house, closed my eyes and covered my ears... 😱😱😱😱😱

Oh, God, I haven't seen this in years, but I've never forgotten it. KQED, channel 9, San Francisco. Nowadays I hear the chime sporadically on a local radio station that plays it in jest once in awhile. I think the 1980s was the era of the most terrifying bumpers we as kids ever saw on TV. I mean, massive black screens with a blitzkrieg of color and sound flying right at you. When I was five, I was scared of the Desilu bumpers at the end of Star Trek reruns. Those were the days.

if you combine it all together, it is. The Moog synthesizer makes a lot of scary sounds. Some of the scariest logos have this synth. The animation is also very "off", like a kid drew it, and the way the lettering looks (the S looks like an 8), as well as the background being pitch-black. Almost everything about it is scary IMO, but you have your opinion, too.

I agree that those of us who were kids in the 80s experienced logos in a way that no kids did before or have since. Because the 80s were when companies were just getting into CG and making their logos aggressive as they could, which was sometimes ominous or scary. And of course, there were still a lot of 70s things around, which meant scary logos like V of Doom and this 1971 PBS ident were a part of the hodgepodge. Most TV logos are less odd (and less prominent) today than they were then.

It's funny how some of the scary logos really creep me out (e.g. the S from Hell), while others come across as old friends. This one falls in the latter category, as does the V of Doom. Maybe that's because 1) there were usually grownups in the room when I encountered the PBS logo as a child, and 2) the V of Doom wasn't introduced until I was older.

Nightmare fuel: think of the tune of this logo as a kid falling down the stairs. Each beat represents how many flights of stairs were fallen. The kid was of course taken to the hospital.
