Public Enemy was a very political group. I remember being in high school (80% white) and everyone listened to Public Enemy. It's hard to fully understand what they are saying if you don't understand the slang or you can't hear the lyrics over the beat. Public Enemy was deep! They confronted truths that a lot of people want to sweep under the rug or ignore. Basically they were saying what happened 400 years ago is still happening today but in a different way.

@@simonmacconmidhe9489 well if someone didn't listen to them back then (like my parents, my father called everything noise lol) and people don't know about them now because they don't play them on the "radio", they may not know they were political.

U TOTALLY missed the point of the video. The slave master raped the slaves wife without him knowing it. The slave was happy because he thought they were having a child and didn't know until it came out white. It's symbolism used to show how African-Americans have been stripped of their language, culture , etc. , when they were enslaved.

These lyrics "King and Chief probably had a big beef, cause of that now I grit my teeth"...British colonialism VS Native Americans leads to African Slavery in new found America. Fucking poetic.

Video is about systems that persist over time (and today). How simple it would be if it was about "individual merit"....

Chuck D has mentioned in interviews that his friend Bill Stephney told him Public Enemy should be the rap equivalent of The Clash and that helped Chuck think about using Public Enemy to make political music.

Actually, I come from mixed race people because of the raping of the women in our family for generations. My mother is 17% British with a bit of Scottish and Irish. I am 21% Scottish, also with some British, German and Welsh amounts. The majority of European DNA among former slaves IS British.

I wouldn't call P.E. a political group. They are more of an activist or civil rights group. They stood up against the social injustice that has been done to black people for thousands of years. Even today. To say political is like saying they were politicians. Different animal all together. They were controversial due their pro black content, plus their boldness to stand against the oppression of African-Americans.

Yes, the English was part of it! But if it makes you uncomfortable? Then you have to be willing to talk about what happened? And still going in America. The early settlers were from England, and they're part of your ancestry. As they are a part of American history. If it makes you feel uncomfortable? You're either going to talk about it or avoid it. But don't act like it didn't happen, or England was part of it. Caucasians have to be willing to face the atrocities of the past and accept their part in it! That's like with Hitler and Germany, Germans know what happened in the past. And they've accepted it, but don't condone it! And done tolerate it in the present! We have "skeletons in our closet!" We either face them or avoid them? But you can only avoid them for so long! 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
