it's crazy how you Americans are struggling with such trivial things. I'm South African, and in schools here, we don't even have people complaining that evolution is taught in religious schools. even middle school students can understand that both can coexist. but then again, we have real problems to focus on. like malnutrition and embezzlement.

Some important context to consider: I explicitly acknowledge those outlier situations where dumbass teachers go on political and inappropriate rants across the spectrum. Those stick with us BECAUSE they are exceptions, not the rule. But, those smaller, more natural intersections between the identities of adults, and the impressionable nature of children are real, common, and important to consider. Hopefully that got across. Also someone needs to tell my why ever midwestern high school has both: 1). A history teacher that also coaches a sport who has an extraordinarily obvious partisan leaning and 2). A lesbian/queer gym teacher. HOW? Is it like some sort of requirement, how can we all have the same experience??

Are Socratic seminars kind of like what you were saying about giving students and teachers a space to explore ideas on equal footing? Man I hated those, but maybe I should’ve appreciated them more?

I'm actually the original indoctrinator. I was there back in 1925, it all started with me.
