😂 Ok, the Lima platform is fun to play with, and they are surprisingly stout. But I think you might have left off a zero on that estimate. Thanks to Lima circle track classes, speed parts are available, but SPENDY compared to any popular V8 platform. It's a great way to spend a lot of money, to not make a lot of power. Not hard to bump up the boost and throw more fuel at it. But we're talking about 80's EFI here. There's a reason they built them with less than 8.5:1 compression... WIiiiiiiide tuning window. A standalone ECU is really the only way to tune them properly, in my opinion. And ditching everything Ford from the ignition system, from the crank sensor to the spark plug is the best way to get accurate and reliable spark timing. The ICM is it's Achilles heel... mounting it to the hot intake manifold was a stroke of engineering genius. 🤣 They don't make the Ford part anymore, and the aftermarket units are less reliable than a random OEM junkyard pull. Plus the later coil packs are expensive compared to their modern CNP cousins. Anyhow... I have a few thoughts on the platform... I've been modernizing one for several years now. Stoked for the next iteration! 😎

I owned a 88 Turbo Sport Coupe brand new. My car was a 5 speed. Boost was 9.5# in 3rd through 5th gear. It did 15# in 1st and 2nd. The motor made 190HP. A guy had to drive it off the line like a heavy car with a 4 banger but once the turbo spooled up, it then drove like a real hotrod. Loved that car. Handled amazing in the sport mode. The boost gage won't show much boost just reving the engine without a load. Fun fact, Ford only built the Turbo Sport Coupe in 87 and 88. The reason for this car was to use up the drive line components left over from the failed SVO Mustang. They were ugly and didn't sell well. I got this info straight from a Ford tech. The brake parts are, or we're very expensive along with the exhaust. The exhaust was specially tuned for the turbo engine. My car had duel exhaust with dual resinators and dual mufflers that were different size from each other.
@jfv65Сағат бұрын
Didn't Ford also stick that 8valve turbo engine in the Merkur XR4Ti ? Ford tried to race that car but it wasn't fast enough so soon after they intruduced the Ford Sierra Cosworth 16V turbo. That car was a WINNER.

41:36 old school ford tech here, from 1987-1996 on all 2.3 liters they were DIS (distributorless ignition system) there’s a gray box with a clip on it that is part of the ignition, if the box has failed you won’t get spark. My 89 Ranger has this system and that box allows the coils to fire. There were some that had a different setup, to test them you’ll need a wiring diagram and a light tester, if your getting power at the module then you’ve got a bad coil. Your car has the computer that needs to be checked for voltage

Oh man, I had a 1990 Supercoupe with the 3.8 supercharged V6 with a 5 speed manual in white with the red leather interior and it was really fun to drive. I have driven a few of the Turbocoupes, all with manuals, and they were very underwhelming. Not slow, but nowhere near as fast as my Supercoupe was. Still, the 2.3 Lima can be upgraded. However, those Limas can still be upgraded to make enough power to have some real fun. The Turbocoupes that I drove were torquey down low, but with the small .48AR Garrett AiResearch T3 turbo and small exhaust it fell off around 4,000 RPM, so you had to shift them early. If they would've been released with a larger capacity fuel pump, bigger injectors, a slightly larger turbocharger, a front mount intercooler, head studs over head bolts, and a correct tune, the Turbocoupe would've been awesome at 225 HP. It wouldve been a great alternative to the Supercoupe and an even better alternative to the Fox body Mustang. It's said that they made 190 HP and 240 lb ft of torque, but I never felt that much power out of the three that I drove. 0-60 in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 145 MPH? I don't see that. My Supercoupe was rated at 210 HP and 265 lb ft of torque, but it felt much stronger than that. I would still love to have one, but I would most likely swap in a 2.0 EcoBoost or even a 2.7 EcoBoost twin turbo with a 5 or 6 speed manual. Now that'd make for an awesome restomod!

Hey Puddin, first a note on hot rod. About age seven most little girls turn into a radio-active isotope called girl-anium. From now on they may have anything from quiet all the time to full blown emotional/nuclear meltdowns with no warning. Treasure the times you can get her to laugh. Second, never run that car with the valve cover off, or you will discover just how fast a modern oil pump can throw 5 quarts of oil ALL OVER YOUR SHOP! Seriously, one of the guys in the shop thought he could watch the valvetrain working, and found out that you can't. Great video, keep up the good work.
@941Earl5 сағат бұрын
Those ignition switches were recalled back in the day. Same with the head light switches. They used to burn cars to the ground. 🤣 Put a new ignition lock cylinder in it, a new ignition switch too. Probably wouldn't hurt to toss a head light switch in it too, in case you decide to leave it in your shop with the battery hooked up! That "computer" by the air filter, is actually called a "Constant Control Relay Module". It has the fuel pump relay, cooling fan relays, and other relays all built into it. None of the relays are serviceable. If any of that stuff goes bad, you have to replace that whole box. They used to go bad all the time too. Good luck! The pick up coils inside the distributor is like your old "points ignition" It triggers when the distributor spins, and sends a pulse to the ignition module. All of those parts were also common failure points as well 🤣 Those turbo coupes were cool when they ran. Unfortunately, they were built in the days when Ford made some real trash electronics. Also, trying to adjust that screw on your throttle body will change the throttle position at idle, which now messes up your TPS sensor voltage at idle. So, now the computer is seeing the wrong TPS voltage, which makes the computer try to adjust the idle by running the IAC (idle air control) valve. You opened up a hornets nest just messing with that throttle screw. You need to adjust it back and measure the TPS voltage back to specification so it will run right.
