A user here mentioned that Elly could’ve killed Madoka quickly but instead she brought her closer to her to “examine” her. This actually reminded me of when Sayaka said that Madoka is cute and that she won’t let her become popular between the boys. According to popular fan theories, Elly was an idol who got harassed and sexualised by her fans, and we all know about the severe obsession with “cute and innocent” idols. What if Elly was jealous of Madoka because she did not go through this despite her being the same she was (theoretically)? She brought her closer to take a closer look on Madoka and take out her sadistic anger on her.

As a curiosity: Elly's true form is that body that falls away from the screen (1:35), it is seen in more detail in her witch card Elly and Oktavia are the only witches that the melody that is heard if it is being played in their barriers, in Oktavia's case, it is played by her familiars, and in Elly's, the music already comes in her barrier. My theory on Elly is that maybe she wished to be famous or just become an idol. The way she fell into despair may be either 1. The media tore her appart, just how her minions tried to tear appart Madoka (fake news, making fun of her etc.) 2. She may have been sexually abused by her managers or higher ups. , which also explains her quote "All I want to do, is to box up that memory" that memory may have been a messed up one which she wanted to forget, maybe that's why her witch form is naked(?)

Here's my full theory on Elly: So we know that her witch nature is reclusive, reclusive people don't normally want the fame an idol has, but maybe after watching idols perform (possibly on TV or through a computer screen like we see her witch nest in) she wanted to change and become just like one, so she decides to make her wish, "I wish I became a famous idol." Or "I wish to be famous." As for her magical ability and weapon, we do see Elly summoning her familiars through her screen and we know that your wish translates into what your ability is as a magical girl. Maybe the idea of wishing for fame can be interpreted as summoning fame, so she would have the ability to summon whatever she desired, summoning things like various weapons would be very useful for fighting witches after all. As for her weapon maybe she summoned things through a magical tv or computer screen hence the reason her witch lives in one. As for why and where her grief seed hatched, firstly I think her grief seed hatched at an amusement park during christmas because of her labyrinth designed as a snow globe with a carousel spinning in it, maybe this took place on Christmas Day where she got to spend her free time before a big performance or something. As for what caused her grief seed to hatch, I believe she was maybe walking home or something when someone came and sexually assaulted or even r*ped her, we do see Elly's familiars what seems to be tickling and frisking her in uncomfortable areas before she's teleported into the witch's labyrinth, so this could be what her last moments of being a human/magical girl felt like before she gave into despair and hatched into a witch in the ally of an amusement park.

this is what I got from other people so imma just sum it up: Elly was a shy but beautiful girl but her parents wanted her to do things other than stay inside so they made her become an idol but then the parents got money hungry and made her do things like fanservice and dressing in sexual things for more money so then she wished for her to see her happy old memories in a tv box and she became depressed once people started to harass her (sexually and her parents abused her when she didn't do what they asked prob) and she kept looking at her past realizing that she would never be happy again so she left prob went to hang out with friends and she got sabotaged because her friends got paid money if they lead her somewhere so fans could do things to her then when she came home she got yelled at her parents for several reasons then sooner or later she became a witch. This is what I got from other people's stories and a bit of mine.

elly isn't exactly the tv, she's the person behind the screen at 0:21 and 0:36, it's clear that her familiars could finish madoka off without needing to escort her to elly's barrier, therefore elly may have been somewhat interested in madoka and could not read what's on her mind until she had a closer look (like she may have been doing at 0:36) before cutting to mami she probably didn't plan on killing her right off the bat or even killing her at all, she was interrogating her at 0:58 she had an even closer look at madoka further hinting this. basically, it's likely that the tv's symbolise elly's recognition and therefore neither of the tv's are elly rather proof of her existence, therefore once they are all gone it counts as her "no longer existing", elly is rather a visionary embodiment than a physical embodiment, just like this text, or anything you see on screen kind of like a vocaloid. it's highly possible that as a magical girl, elly must have had a recognition complex and felt everybody had to know her, or she had to be something different to truly exist, "h.n elly (kirsten)" is suppose to be the witch's name h.n may mean "handle name" a term used mainly for online persona and title, hinting that elly may have had a physical sociophobia and spent her days broadcasting over the internet, instead of being physically recognized Kirsten, on the other hand, is probably her true name, Kirsten means "follower of christ" and it's a harsh name to give someone as it basically decides who someone is, perhaps she did not like the expectations she was given pre determined, and made her own name to forget about her "kirsten" as she was not proud of the name and felt controlled or something rather the cause of her grief and transformation into a witch is up for debate

When you rewatch the Witch fights, you realize that while the Witches as eerie and aggressive, they're rarely murderous until attacked. Example with Elly is that she's simply watching Madoka and reading her most recent strong memory, but is actually only reading the part where Madoka and Mami are becoming friends. When Madoka protests, she gets irritated and decides to pull Madoka apart (which she already did and put back together 2 times). When Sayaka shows up in a foreboding way and attacks, Elly gets nervous and looks around until she "faces" Sayaka and starts to read her memories. Her familiars laugh at Sayaka almost sadistically (I assume it's that Ella read something about her situation), but Elly is reacting to the first memory she picked up. Sayaka kills her before she has time to react. Her physical body flops before she comprehends that she's dead

I think to say witches are harmless until being provoked is not what’s happening here. I think of the labyrinth almost like a web just because the spider is not actively killing you doesn’t mean the intention is not to kill you. I haven't seen a comment talking about *where* Kirsten/Elly could've turned into a witch, so I'll just make a few guesses (Basing it off of the "Kirsten wished to be a popular idol" theory) The carasouels imply that she may have turned into a witch at a fair/amusement park, where for once, she wanted to enjoy herself without having to worry about her fans by disguising herself, but in the end, her disguise fell off and she became surrounded by obsessive fans who refused to leave her alone, pushing her into despair and turning her into a witch right there (maybe it was right as she was leaving with one of her friends, "today was fun, I'll bring a lunch box next time") Another guess of mine is that she turned into a witch right in the middle of one of her performances, since there's so many TVs in her labyrinth. The fact that shes only seen within a TV (before Sayaka killed her), on what seems to be a stage, gives me this idea. Perhaps the reason why she turned into a witch during that time, could either be because she was doing a poor performance and was getting booed for it, or that she was thinking about all of the stress of being a magical girl in one world, on top of having to worry about keeping up a reputation in the other. The reason why she laughs at Madoka's sad memories is to distract her from her own, before falling into despair. Poor Kirsten... Edit: After watching this another time, I have the new theory that she must've turned into a witch at a boardwalk. Boardwalks sometimes have amusement-park like activities going on, like carousels and carnival games. And of course, they're near beaches, which means its closer to the ocean. This could explain why Kirsten's barrier has an "under water" setting.

My theory is that kirsten is the name of her only friend before she made the contract, and as she turned into a witch, she remembered the last time they hung out together and regrets not being able to appreciate her friendship. She wished to be an idol because she dreamed of what it would be like to have everyone admire you, instead of remaining in the background as she might have in her normal life. When she became an idol, she rarely found the time to be with her friend anymore, and she quickly realizes the true nature of being an idol. To escape it all, she takes herself to the boardwalk, alone. Maybe this was the last place she hung out with kirsten. As she regrets losing her friend, she jumps into the sea, and turns into a witch trying to drown herself. This also reflects in how her witches kiss has people kill themselves

I do not know what this witch's story or wish really is, but I have my thoughts. I think that she could have been a younger girl who wished that she could be a famous actress or musician(Hence the TV screens and stages). She thought it would be fun, and maybe she would make a lot of money (the carousels, and fanciness of the labyrinth). All of this stress, along with constantly having to fight witches, finally sent her into despair. Another thought (this one is significantly darker) I had is completely different- maybe she was brainwashed to believe in a certain religion/cult. It kinda makes sense, with the marionettes with angel wings/halos holding TV screens up with flashing images. The brainwashing could have made the religion seem fun and cheerful (carnival themes), but perhaps it made her go insane and drove her into despair.

From the looks of her barrier i think Elly was a child who wasnt allowed to go outside because she was sick often, but had access to television channels and dreamt of going to the carnival/ amusement parks she's seen in advertisements, causing her wish to be "I want to feel better so that i can go to the carnival/ amusement parks" only to fall into despair because the carnival/amusement parks got shut down one by one to the point where she had to stay inside because of boredom.

Here is my theory for Elly She was a normal girl who on Christmas Eve she was seen doing something amazing near or on a carousel that she was put on tv and never wanted to forget that moment hence her covetous nature so kyubey came and granted her wish but it backfired because that was the only memory she could remember and fell into despair cause her memories were pretty much erased so she wants other people's memories but could only take bad ones her familiars are angels probably because in some fairytales memories are given or taken by angels but that my theory
