I have nothing but love for Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans. My friends in Puerto Rico and in New York City, Washington, DC have been the most kind, generous and lively of people. For example, in 1994 my very first day that I went to Puerto Rico, I was staying with a friend in Santurce. I wanted to help out by getting some groceries. While in Walgreen's, I asked in Spanish, to someone in the checkout line where the best market or supermarket was nearby. This woman and her daughter DROVE me in her car to the nearest a few blocks away, waited til I checked out and then drove me back to my friends place! Now, this was many years ago. I believe that the Puerto Ricans must still be this way. Friendly, proud of their country and myriad of cultures, in spite of the nasty treatment by some of us North Americans. Que viva Puerto Rico!

Thanks, this helped me learn alot about the rich history of Puerto Rico, I feel like there isn't enough media out there that tells you about the history but also immerses you in it where you get to see the people hear the people hear their values out of their own mouths. The history of the Taino people, West Africans, Liberos, Spanish historical significance is so complex the way it all melds together to make this sort of unified people is very special. The significance of the different music genres like Bomba and learning more in depth about salsa has been impactful. How music helps to unify and bridge gaps of communcation. Thanks for sharing Phonic Earth and I hope this gets more views this is well produced and real.

It's both but people don't like to give credit to Puerto Ricans. Salsa as we know today around the world is because of Puerto Ricans. Before Salsa, Cubans were doing son Cubano y Montuno. Which was slow and didn't have that spice that Puerto Rican put into Salsa.

From minute 11:34 to 11:36 no translation. Why? Between: "Bomba has always expressed a message" and "We need to use it". Missing part between those citations: Spanish Original= "Un mensaje de justicia, de revolución" ; English missing translation: "A message of justice, of revolution"

The cuatrista (cuatro player) is an excellent musician but he does not know well the history of the música (décima, aguinaldo and trova) jíbara in Puerto Rico. The influence of música jíbara comes from Spain mainly waves of emigrants from the Canary Islands and Andalusians between the 1700s and 1800s.

@ilimari
@ilimari 9 ай бұрын
Is “cortaron a Elena” and it has the same music as “que bonita bandera” because that music was originally used like an oral newspaper. People sang what was happening in town using that song but with different lyrics. For example let’s say a boy named Juan was killed on San Jorge Street at 6:00pm, so instead of printing that on newspapers, they would improvise lyrics narrating what happened using that same music…

We know. They were derived from the Bongos del Monte used in Changui, right? And the French Haitians are lurking in the shadows of that historical snippet. It's fascinating to learn how a culture develops from the melding of many others. We who know some history of PR also know about the modern congas, timbales and the Tres brought to Borinquen from Cuba. It's about the two wings of the bird, bro. It's just that our two islands share a special cultural affinity, and we adopted Cuban musical forms and instruments as our own so long ago that they became part of our musical family. It's a normal process.

Here we go again! The long-in-the-tooth Salsa origin dispute rears its ugly head again. I could get into an argument about how it is fusion music born in New York and taking root in PR, where it acquired a more Puerto Rican flavor, but I'm too old for this. Let's stipulate that most of the roots are Cuban, but since others were also grafted in, the tree grew into a new species. But does it really matter? Salsa's golden era is long past, and we'll have to suffer Reggaeton and Trap for the foreseeable future and not just in PR, Cuba is not immune from that noise, it's already there and I heard they "Cubanized" Reggaeton by adding a cut from Bomba Sica! Weird! I don't know if it's true, but the source is reputable. Anyway, let the sleeping "Salsa" dogs lie.
