Ingredients for batter:
* Raw rice - 1 cup
* Whole urad dhal - 1 tbsp
* Salt
Ingredients for tempering:
* Ghee - 2 tsp
* Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
* Urad dhal (split) - ½ tsp
* Asafoetida - 1 tsp
* Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Method:
1. Clean and soak rice and urad dhal in water for 2 hours.
2. Grind to a fine batter and add salt.
3. Allow fermenting overnight.
4. In a small wok, heat ghee and temper with ingredients given under ‘tempering’
5. Pour the tempering over the batter. Mix well.
6. Heat oil in a wok/Kadai until hot and not smoking.
7. Using a small ladle, pour batter into the centre of the wok and splash oil over like you would for pooris.
8. You will notice the sides curling up like a ‘skirt’
9. Remove when it is still white in colour.
10. Serve hot immediately.
Note:
* Can be eaten as is or with chutney.
* If your batter doesn’t ferment, add the juice of half a lemon.

U are very lucky to have a mum like her.she is feeling bad that her level of consciousness was low back then.She is very much towards embracing ideologies of this decade.Not many parents are like this.They are unwilling to change. I luv her kindness and she is very gentle.Wanna a grandma like her.(Never had one in my life)

My grand parents were from Trichy ! therevalong with idlis , Vellai appam, was slso prepared on Deepavali mornings; 7:50 I remember Relishing it afterwards i didnt ever taste it; thank you for rekindling the fond memories and the authentic recipe ! Ps :; i gathered that the " Madi" people would not have s cooked breakfast like Idli so they would have this instead as it is a fried item😢 While grinding for idli for the rest of the family, a pirtion of rice batter and a little urad batter would be taken to create the vellaiappam batter

Wow though I know recipe I watched for your mom and sons conversation , my mom makes vellai appam for every deepavali and I miss a lot after marriage, as here making bajji is tradition , my mom( she is from srivilliputtur) adds one cup curd before frying in oil for sourness .

We made it appa kaarai on diwali mornings at my mother's place. Breakfast was vellai appam, and bakshanams, followed by ingi marundu. Enough to keep us going without lunch followed by more baksh in the afternoon. Aaaah! Bliss!! Those were the days!! Thanks for bringing back childhood memories🙏

Vellaiappam Mavoo is thinner, if we reduce water, vellaiappam will be more nice , without much consumption of oil,just information, don't think,I am finding fault .
