Pull-A-Part Mopar Gold- Checking Out A Time Capsule 1967 Dodge Coronet

Our friend Ivan sent us a message letting us know that a '67 Coronet had just landed at our local Pull-A-Part, ironically just as we start digging into our Charger project.
Here's the good, bad and ugly of what we found along with a couple of other death row inmates that really should have been saved.

I just rescued a 2dr hardtop '68 Chevelle from Purkey's salvage yard on the Oklahoma-Kansas state line outside of Coffeyville. The yard is so old it has stuff all the way back to the 40's and even a handful of 30's. There's an old closed dirt racetrack next to it and some of the old racetrack equipment is still there. This yard is incredible! He's selling whole cars and stuff is disappearing fast. However, I suspect he's possibly crushing, too. People! Get out there and buy these cars before it's too late!

I was hoping to see the VIN on the LH door post there, and the fender tag. I got some of the VIN from the glancing shot you did. As you know, it goes like this with the VIN for the win: W for Coronet, H for High price class (Coronet 440), 41 for four door sedan, F for 318 V8 with two barrel, 7 for 1967 model year, 1 for Lynch Road, Detroit, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lynch Road facility closed in April 1981 and a powder coating business is on that site now. As other stated, I would have grabbed some of those tools. They would clean up sitting in vinegar in an hour or two. With the tag, you can brag: WH41 for Coronet (W), High price class/440 (H), four door sedan (41), 41 for 318 V8, 5 for three speed automatic transmission, H1B for Blue interior trim, WW1 for White exterior paint, S-1 for factory AC, R-1 for AM radio, h-7 for fender mounted turn signal indicators, A-1 for 26" radiator (due to it having AC more than likely), among other codes. I would guess that the RH fender was changed at one point. Never go by those yard tags as you know they can be wrong. Go by the VIN number and cowl tags (yes, those could be switched as well, but less likely). O.Z. Hall Ford is gone and I believe Mr. Hall was the Birmingham, AL tax collector for some time. Yes, the T-Bird is a 1987, with the VIN for the win: 1FA for US made Ford passenger car, B for manual seat belts, P61 for Thunderbird, F for 5.0L (302) V8 with EFI, 4 is a check digit, H for the 1987 model year, H for Lorain, OH assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lorain, OH plant operated from 1958 to 2005 and produced about 8 million vehicles in the time it was around. Should be paint code 1K Light Gray exterior paint.

Yep I know how you feel about that. Few years back there was a late 70s trans am in the yard that was complete. Yellow v8 auto car just mint sheet metal besides some typical f body rust starting in the cowl by the window original paint but had a decent amount of patina to it. Came back the next day and the car was cut in HALF! Someone took the doors, cut floor pans, cut the rear half of the roof off. Poor thing was shaped like a taco. Sad to see but glad someone got parts off of it they needed.

I've gotten lucky in that regard. I got a running Trans Am with a title for free from a coworker's neighbor and it came with a garage full of NOS, used and new aftermarket parts. Only thing I didn't take was the 1978 Trans Am engine because I didn't have a way to move it at the time. That engine would be worth a few bucks now. I wound selling the car in 2006 (I got it in 2002). It even had a valid title. I kept the OEM NOS parts and the good used parts. I flipped the high performance aftermarket junk and made some money on that. I remember shipping the MSD wire set over to Poland from an Ebay sale. Another time a local guy (actually twice) called me up and said he had parts cars he was done with and I could take whatever I wanted for nothing. I jumped at the opportunity. The one car was an '81 Trans Am with a 301 non-turbo pulled from a junkyard and the other was an '80 Espirit 301. I got good used stuff from both of them. The 1981 had a note under the scoop addressed to the guy I knew that pulled it from the yard. It was from the guy who junked it. The letter cursed out this guy and said, "How dare you take my baby from its' final resting spot. I loved this car. I hope you hit a pole." I showed it to the guy. He was a Greek-American and a bit superstitious. He said, "Dude, that's bad karma. What are you going to do?" I said "Write back". So I did. I wrote, "Dear, Mr. Trans Am owner. If you took better care of this car, it wouldn't be here with me picking parts off of it. It's only a 301 and you should have thought of that before you put "your baby" in its' final resting spot. I'm going to pull the parts off of it, and you're going to like it. Signed, me". With that, I put the note back under the hood, thanked the guy I knew and left. LOL.

I don't understand these people that buy all these junk cars and just let them rot. most of them are already in their late 50's or 60's and think they'll live forever and finish all of them. they refuse to sell anything and usually they die of a heart attack and everything gets scraped by the next of kin. happened to my uncle and i wanted to buy a few things off them and by the time I heard he was gone so was everything else. there was a 69 chevelle ss 396 a 72 ls6 454 chevelle a 67 mustang gt390 and much more all went to the scrap yard cuz of greed!

I know everyone here has experienced the anguish of "those parts! Were are they!!!" in videos or junkyard crawl posts like this. A mid-80s Shelby Charger w/all 4 of the 5x100mm "Pizza Wheels" underneath the rear hatch - improperly shod, of course, with 195/60-15 tires by its final owner. A Dodge Dart Swinger w/intact rear glass and a set of dog-dish hubcaps. A Plymouth Satellite w/full wraparound bumper. A Ford Falcon wagon with clean grille and D-pillar trim. Even the occasional Malaise-Era automobile that was garaged and still has its full dashboard panel and top cover intact. Treasures, all. Thank you, Tony.

Hey it's Ivan, glad you got to check out the Coronet. I got to it on Saturday and found four silver dollars, a bunch of 8 track tapes, and a pack of Jimmy Dean baseball cards unopened from 1993 in the back seat, Nolan Ryan was the cover card. I bet that car was a storage unit by the 90's. Found a few capacitors in the toolbox in the trunk. Thanks for showing off the car to your viewers, I hope they will use the parts. Junk yard trips are freakin fun even if you don't haul away any gems, it's a good time none the less.

And in the late 50s when I was a baby my mother used to set with me out on the front porch of The farmhouse and point out the cars going by and tell me what it was year, make, model, tell me the engine, carburetor and transmission options. That I could tell if it was an automatic or a stick by watching the exhaust and you could tell when it shifted. I know a little something about automobiles..Mom was a dirty hot rodder, she used to race her 57 Pontiac out at the old Pontiac airstrip. When it was a brand new car..Some of my first memories are standing on the hump between the bucket seats hanging on as Mom is busy going through the gears racing from stoplight to stop light on Woodward in Dad's brand new 62 Tempest.

How many people's mothers used to rebuild their own four barrels on the dining room table? or my ever favorite one when I was in high school, Monday mornings having people ask me what does your mother have in that red 68 Catalina? Because she blew my doors off. Mom used to go out and race from stop light to stop light on the highway on Friday and Saturday nights when Dad was at work. And on the night he would take the Catalina to work she'd be out in his 69 Chevy truck with a 70 Corvette 454 and embarrassing the teenagers. I came up alongside her a couple times in my 66 GTO and that old woman could work a 4 speed.

Most 1967 318 Coronets have 7.25" rear ends. Some manual transmission 273 Coronets have 8.75" rears and 1969 trailer towing package 318's got a 727 trans in place of the 904, with an 8.25" rear.

just soak the tools to remove the mouse urine--I usually go with 50/50 vinegar and table salt to get rid of rust. Personally i find that many tools in the trunk mean the mechanicals were on their way out and perhaps the electronics too. but it can be repaired if it's not reproduced. before I had a car worth having, I melted credit cards on stuff like this, pulling stuff not reproduced off old cars (even tower screw clamps for hoses). a dollar here and there and it added up when you were a kid with nothing else to do on a weekend but get into trouble.

@@albertgaspar627 Yup. I saved a whole box of tools I bought off of a guy for $10. They had been through Superstorm Sandy. I soaked them in vinegar and baking soda and most got to useable condition. One or two were broken, so I got them to the point where I could ID them and off they went to Sears to swap out. This was around 2019 when Sears was still around in my area.

Fan shroud causes fan to run in a low pressure area , and gives less drag , as well as pulling air through the condenser. Run Shroud. 69 Ranchero was my first car

I suspect full size cars like this popularized the painted roof option since the manufacturers had practice with cop cars. As for the FredFlinstonefloor, we called that that the "ditch the beer its 5.0" option. That Ranchero sure is the Squire option, all those holes are for the fake framing of the fake wood paneling. My 1975 Country Squire Pinto wagon had studs sticking out of the bodywork for it's trim.

All 1967 and some early 68 318 cylinder blocks have thicker cylinder walls than the later 68 and newer 318 blocks. Dodge had planned a high performance engine with a 4 inch bore for the 67 Dart to compete with the 327 Chevy II, but due to lack of performance, it was scratched from production and the 318 benefited from its cylinder block, with the 68 340 being developed from its failure. An original 1967 318 block should be a heavy one. The 1967 318 usually has a forged steel crankshaft too.

Get the dash panel and gauges Tony.....maybe you can use it in the Charger as a last resort if those gauges aren't working. New or working Charger gauges are almost impossible to find. I just sold my 66 Charger a couple months ago, but I planned to replace the dash for a Coronet panel....I think you can get a new re po panel and most of the gauges.

With your knowledge of these cars. And prior experience selling used parts. Have you ever thought about starting an eBay store? I work at a collision repair/body shop. I asked my boss if I could go through the parts before anything goes in the dumpster. He doesn't care, so I keep the parts that still have life in them. I like it because I'm keeping usable parts out of the landfill, I get to help somebody fix their car at a discount, and I make a little money on the side. I list when I have time so i don't have to worry about it like a regular business. With your previous parts business. And knowledge of old Mopars. You could do pretty good.

I had a 67 Coronet 440 2d hard top black with a white top. I had it since I was 18 just sold it like 6 years ago I'm 46 now so I had it most of my life. Loved that car had a 318 2bl when I got it but ran it till it blew so I put a 400 out of a Dodge truck then it had a 440 when I sold it. Miss it till this day! Peace

@@MrTheHillfolk my local pull a part is like that but they do have a section that you can buy whole cars for usually a reasonable price. They had a 60s buick in it at one time for around $5k that didn't look horrible but was a little ratty.

@@MrTheHillfolk There's a yard by me that gets tons of old cars, and they're more than willing to sell them whole. The famous Victory Auto Wreckers in Bensenville, Illinois will also do that... recently notable with a good condition 1956 Cadillac Coupe de Ville and a 1970 Dodge Charger!

What would they want for the whole car? Probably less then the parts you want. Its been a while since I've been to a bone yard but it doesnt take long before they destroyed! In the late 70's a friend of mine had a 73 LeMans sport. His first car and he had managed to find a 73 GTO rally gauge cluster for it. Late 80's I found the car in a junk yard with the interior still intact. Short on time and funds at the moment I figured I'd get it a week later. Next Saturday I go back to grab the dash and its smashed! Not removed but smashed. This was a tach and gauge cluster, pretty hard to find for a 73 GTO.

I think I'd buy that frame rail off the dodge, and use it on the charger, or I'd buy the entire car and drop ship it next to the charger to make the swapping of sheetmetal and frame work easier.

To bad it's a 318 but still a lot of usable parts! I would buy the whole car and part it out even though they're starting to repop a lot of old mopar stuff but Mopar guys are crazy and like original OEM parts! I feel the same way though even when they're that bad I hate seeing them you can't save them all and you'll go broke trying to!

The tools you need for removing the parts you need other than the quarter panel are probably all right there in the trunk. I have found that junkyards are often willing to cut a great deal on old tools and tool boxes as long as they have rust on them. Does that car have the hideaway headlights in it? It kinda looks like it might, but I cant tell for sure. That Ranchero looks more like about a 71 to me.

I would absolutely pull everything off that from ALL the bright work to the glass all the way down to the old hardware, it’s all good these days.I would leave nothing but a carcass. I miss the good old days where you would find this stuff everywhere and every man and his dog wasn’t trying to get rich of everything and anything like today.

I’ve got a nearly identical car but the 2 door hardtop version. Same color, drivetrain,etc. It’s a time capsule just like this one all the way down to original keys/owner’s manual/coors beer cans under the front seat.

When we were down in Tennessee from Michigan I found it hilarious that you still had the beat to hell shit boxes running around but there was absolutely no rust on any of them they were just solid... but shit boxed

Thats funny you did a junkyard video today....today i was in pick n pull (first time in over 10 years) to pull a 360 magnum for my 77 powerwagon.... its fun in the yard.... unfortunately i had to pull the engine when it was dumping rain, and the truck was in a huge 4"-6" lake!! Fun stuff!!
