In this Pull Me Under guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this progressive metal classic by the incomparable Dream Theater in it's entirety.
The tuning standard tuning.
"Pull Me Under" pretty much has it all. John Petrucci uses clean arpeggiated guitar riffs, jazzy clean guitar chord voicing, huge metal riffs, chaotic single note riffs, seamless legato licks, melodic yet scorchingly fast guitar licks and more in this marathon of a song.
All of this requires a pretty epic lesson clocking in at well over an hour, but that is needed for such an in-depth look of this masterpiece.
I will tackle each section in the order that it they appear on the original recording. One thing that makes "Pull Me Under" so unique, is that most of the time, when you get to a verse section, the guitar riffs are completely different than the other verses. The same thing goes for the pre-chorus sections. It is really cool how they still make it all work.
I think the genius of John Petrucci is revealed the further you get into the song. I hope you enjoy this in-depth look at this prog metal classic!
Good Luck! #pullmeunderguitarlesson #dreamtheater #guitarcovers
Carl...

Carl really good effort to break this down and teach it. I learnt a number of songs from you and its been great. Dream theater is not easy to break down to teach and this is a lot of work to produce this. Once again its great what you have done here and committed to a tough industry that chews and spits most artists out.

Carl I don't know how you do it but you have a great gift, not only for playing or learning almost every note for a song, but teaching. When I first started playing guitar I was looking on how to play but not very many people can teach to play like you do, you break down the song into parts that make it easier to understand, you explain it very well and do it note by note. Thanks Carl, I don't know how far I would have gotten if weren't for you, but I wouldn't have had this gift if it weren't given to me by God. 3 years have I learned from watching you, thanks.

That hammer-on punctuating the power chord as demonstrated between about the 6:50&7:10 always reminds me of the Paranoid riff from Black Sabbath. My bands covered several Leatherwolf songs back in the day, and punctuating simple power chord rhythm patterns with hammered notes and trills eventually made its way into my overall style of playing between mid '80s and when I discovered Dream Theater in the mid '90s. Credit to Howe, Gayer, Olivieri (Leatherwolf) & Iommi (Black Sabbath) for their collective inspiration.

Petrucci himself mentions that Paranoid riff hammer on blew his mind when he first discovered it! I'm pretty sure you're exactly right, that Paranoid inspired the hammer on in Pull Me Under.
