Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises

This video instructs families with a baby with Microcephaly how to work with their baby. My name is Amy Sturkey, PT. I am a pediatric physical therapist in the US. I'd like to give some ideas to families who want to help their baby with Microcephaly due to the Zika virus. This video teaches a simple technique in how to work on head control and neck strength while pulling your baby to sitting. I taped this video specifically for families with a child with Microcephaly; however, this technique could be used with any child with a developmental delay who holds his/her shoulders elevated. I hope you find this idea useful and simple to follow through. My website is www.pediatricPTexercises.com. My Facebook page is Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises. My informational books, "A is for Autism," "C is for Cerebral Palsy," "D is for Down Syndrome," "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Hips" and "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Knees" are available on Amazon. "A is for ADHD" should be available shortly. Do not hesitate to contact me at amysturkey@gmail.com with questions, concerns or favorable reviews! Please note I am unable to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated.
I am so honored to have people from all over the world watch my videos. I have reviewed and corrected the closed captions for this video so that you might understand what I am saying even if you don't speak English. I hope the directions below are helpful to you.
To turn on Captions, click CC in the bottom right corner of the video.
To choose a different caption language:
At the bottom right, click Settings. It looks like a wheel.
Click Subtitles/CC.
Select a language.
If the language isn't listed when you click Subtitles/CC:
Click Auto-translate.
Select a language.
Of course, if the captions are in the way of viewing the details in the video, you can always turn them off in the bottom right-hand corner of your video screen.

Just wanted to thank you for this video. I have been working on pulling to sit with my 8 week old baby after noticing a significant head lag when sitting up or lowering down, and I wasn't sure how to go about helping her. The knee modification made a huge difference!

Hi. My boy used to have head lag at nearly 5 months, but then 2 days later his head lag dissapeared. His head control was a little behind but still improved over time without intervention. In fact he still rolled back to tummy before 4 months and tummy to back at around 6 months. He sitted unsupported at around 6.5 - 7 months, army crawled at 7 months and a half, pulled to stand at 8 months and 1 week, got into sitting by himself at nearly 9 months. Now he is 9 months and a half. So not sure how the delayed head control can affect my child. He looks like a normal child now, very active.

My 4 month old had floppy head while being held and in a sitting position. How many times should I do this with her each time and every day?

junototoro I am inable to provide treatment suggestions for a child I have not personally evaluated. With clients I see on my caseload I will often tell them to try to work with their child at least 30 minutes each day, broken up in small periods over the day. However without evaluating your child I do not know the answer for your four month old. I wish you luck

Dear Amy Sturkey, I am so grateful for the videos you’ve shared. They have really encouraged me. How much time per day would you recommend for a 2 month old with low tone for head control ( pull to sit)? Jede

Unfortunately, I cannot give treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated. I can say that when I see clients I will often give them 3 to 5 things to work on and across the day I ask them to try to spend about 30 minutes on the different exercises. A Pediatric Physical Therapy could help personalize a plan for your child.

Hi! Thanks for this. When I try to do this with my 3.5 m old he gets really frustrated and pushes my belly with his feet. Sometimes he engages his tummy and head lag is almost unnoticeable. Do you have a variation or reccos to avoid that leg pushing. Hi is very strong in the legs and can support his weight when standing. Head control is good, we ramped up tummy time and side playing and he can hold his head while supported sitting and being hold. Trunk control is getting better.

From what you’re saying, it sounds like your child is doing well. I do not have a variation on the specific task. If you need variations for your specific child, I recommend you contact a local physical therapist who can assess your child and address the variations needed.

I am allowed to do virtual office visits if I have done a in person evaluation and if you live in North Carolina in this US, according to my licensure. I am so sorry, but that is my professional limitations.

In my Videos, I have often perform exercises that show trunk strengthening. For a curve of the backbone or what I would call a scoliosis, I would strongly recommend you find a local pediatric physical therapist to help you.

O please accept my apologies. I am checking thru my comments and see that my response to you never posted. Hopefully you don't need my response any longer. But the answer is yes. I perform this exercise on children who are much older than 6. As they get older and bigger, I have to modify how I do it, but it is basically the same. Best wishes.
