I've been asked a few times by those of you watching what I think about "comedy bands". Bands that are by definition designed to be a comedy act. My favourite, of course, is Spinal Tap. They are without a doubt an incredible band, even though it's all an act. Let me explain why.
If you are against comedy and music coming together...well...I have a message for you.

In late 2016, I got to meet Michael McKeon when I was drumming for the late Fred Willard at The Wilshire Ebell Theater for the Peter Boyle Multiple Myeloma Foundation fundraiser event. Michael was headlining, and played some incredible original songs on his acoustic. Fred and I were one of the opening acts, and there was lots of talent in the room that night, both on the stage and in the audience. It was quite the evening. We were all talking backstage, when Fred and I had to get read for our set. I turned to Michael and said, "Oh no! I'm the drummer! I'M GONNA EXPLODE AND DIE!!!!" Michael grabs me by the shoulders and says, "Hey! Relax! You don't have a contract. You'll be fine."

@@TempoDrift1480 Most people think of 80s Aerosmith, but a huge part of their career took place in the 70s. They had sexual lyrics similar to Spinal Tap a lot of the time actually in both periods. Additionally, the whole 'band falling apart due to girlfriend issues' and 'losing popularity rapidly' situations were experienced by Aerosmith. Joe Perry left the band after his toxic wife spilled milk, yes she literally spilled milk, on the other guitarists wife. After he left Aerosmith they weren't even able to fill small home shows in Boston venues. Steven Tyler was living off 10$ a day handed out my management trying to regulate his drug use while Perry descended into drugs fully, was dumped by his wife after he lost all his money, & had to sell his prized Les paul (which Slash bought btw and then gifted back many years later) just to eat. They reunited thanks to Joe's new girlfriend Billy (who also got him clean) getting him to contact Tyler again which revitalized their careers completely in combination with bringing in new songwriting partners. Pretty Spinal Tap, that :D

My band Shark Sandwich is celebrating its 32nd anniversary next month. The true genius of Spinal Tap is it's unerringly accurate portrayal of the misadventures of any band that has almost toured at any level. I lose count of the number of scenes that I have personally experienced during my long ago days touring in a rock and roll band. What is even more amazing is the scenes are as a general rule all improvised. Anything these guys do is worth watching. Bravo Justin for making a video on Spinal Tap.

If an artist can't see themselves in this movie and laugh, I probably don't want to hear what they have to say. On a related note, one of the things I've always loved about Justin & The Darkness is how humor can pervade their music without it ever being a joke or farce. That is true for this channel as well. The kind of giddy goofiness woven into everything from "Growing On Me" to "America" (a fave of mine) to the unhinged moments in the vocal delivery in "Do it in the Dark" just magnifies the impact in a good way. Thank you for making it a point to breathe such life into your work.

Yesterday I watched a video with you and your brother and it was a REAL Spinal Tap moment. It was a Rig Rundown and Dan was showing his guitars off. He said you had gifted him a guitar named Doon but the interviewer thought he had said June. Chris (the interviewer) asked if it was named June because that's when he received the guitar and after a long pause Dan said it was named after the David Lynch classic film without correcting him. Chris said that's cool and then continued to call the guitar June. Clearly he was unfamiliar with the film. This accidental comedy would have fit nicely in the Rob Reiner classic film called Spinal Tap

I watched this when I was v young and thought it was a real documentary- still loved it! Since then have rewatched it far too many times, bought various albums AND went to see them at Wembley in the 90s - Rock Gods!! (with a very hefty sprinkling underplayed observational comedy) ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

I had just gotten off a 3 month tour with a band and was living in a motel by myself for a couple of weeks, waiting to go out again. For me, the first night after a tour was always an emotional roller coaster between elation in having a much needed break, to restless loneliness from having the brakes slammed on, to feeling depressed and a bit useless and worn out from all the over indulgences. I think this was around 1986, and I turned on the crappy TV and Spinal Tap was just starting. I really had no idea what I was watching at first, but it quickly took my mind off of the usual brain stew that happens during those times. What great timing and what a great film. I've watched it many times since. This is the best R&R movie ever made. And this cast seems to get everything they do right. Best In Show is another classic, nailing the dog show world. Justin, I just found your channel last week and can't get enough of it. You're taking me away from my work. Excellent!

I have their album Back From The Dead. Highly recommended. The soundtrack omits a lot of songs from the film and for whatever reason the versions on the soundtrack aren't as good as the film versions. This is Spinal Tap is the greatest rock and roll movie ever made, I'd say. Wholeheartedly. I think many consider the competition to be A Hard Day's Night and The Last Waltz. Both those are great as they are but This is Spinal Tap wins out because it also happens to be in the top two funniest movies of all time, too. I thought one of Derek's bass necks has eight strings on it. Check the footage!

Thanks for this! Humour most definitely belongs in Music and Spinal Tap is the best way to show why. Other notable parodies were the comic strips 'bad news' and more bad news, which still has me in stitches. I'm a huge Zappa fan too, and he was never afraid to mix serious music and comedy to great effect. 'does humour belong in music' was an album and video release of much of Franks amusing music, and shows how excellent the mix can be....

I wonder how hard they laughed when they were coming up with the lyrics. My friends and I would make up lyrics to songs on the radio and we would have to pull the car over because were in such a state of hysteria.

Thank You for acknowledging A Mighty Wind! I always saw The Folksmen as the unofficial alternative history of The Thamesmen… It’s what would have happened if Heavy Metal hadn't come along to turn them into Tap 😅👍

One of my favorite Folksmen lyrics is from "Never Did No Wanderin'" because it somehow feels like something Tap would write if they tried to do something folk-inspired - like it's supposed to sound cool and grandiose, and it kinda is, but at the same time it's comedic because it makes no sense when you actually put it all together: "My mother was the cold north wind My father was the son... Of a railroad man from west of hell Where the trains don't even run".

Great video! I have something for COMMENTS DAY 🙃: I've often wondered what Mariah Carey's 'The Roof' would sound like as a rock song. The lyrics are beautifully written (as is true for many of her songs). The album version of the song even features an instrumental break that would be perfect for a guitar solo, and if you're an MC fan, you know she loves rock music, too. There's nothing more magical to me than when a hip hop or r&b song is performed with a live band. Anyway, give the song a listen if you feel so inclined!

On july 1st, 1992, "Tap" did it's one day cross canada tour. It was paid for by Canada's Much Music ( canada's MTV) in honour of Canada's 125th birthday. They literally played extremely short sets at various cities in one day ( actually played on stage, this is pre interenet and no big screen). Epic tour.

Talk about mud flaps, my girls got em. Has cracked me up since I was 12 ..... My dad was half owner of a blues bar when I was a kid. So there were many interesting experiences, my parents had bands over for dinner many times. And a couple always stood out. Baby Jason and the spankers... hilarious name, but all three of them guys could play any instrument in the band. Wich led to them rotating thru each other's instruments mid song. Always a killer show. We are about 15 minutes from Branson Missouri, so we had all sorts of bluegrass bands in as well( big smith was one of my favorites) so funny you mentioned a mighty wind, that one hit home big time concidering the area I grew up in.

These guys are kings of comedy. Unbelievable talent. That whole crew. All those movies are genius. It's kind of frustrating to me that some people seem to give comedic music less credit. Like, Roger Miller. Hilarious, but talented as fcuk. Zappa, Beasties, Dr. Hook, The Darkness, The Tubes, and yes, AC/DC. Bon Scott? Hilarious. I love bands and artists that use a healthy dose of humor. Why wouldn't you? Like, to fit some sort of dark image constantly. If you aren't a drag, you'll turn yourself into one.
