I own a Harley Benton bass and an acoustic guitar. Both played great out the box and with some minor tweaking they played excellently. I use them for recording the bass is good enough to put down bass and the acoustic has actually exceeded all expectations in playability and sound. Both combined cost me less than £200.

I have been a rhythm guitar player, singer/song writer in my band for the last 10 years. In 2019 my bass player moved away so I had to become a bass player to keep the band going. And it's been an awesome journey to write and learn songs on the bass. I would encourge every guitar player to also get a bass and learn the bass parts to every song you know on guitar. Maybe start with something bluesy so you can get past only playing the root notes. You'll wish you would have done it sooner. Just knowing the ins & outs of the bass parts to the songs you are playing will help broaden your musical perspective, especially if you're a song writer, it's a must.

For the person thinking about buying a bass, I own two Harley Bentons guitars and they are really fantastic guitars for the money. Much nicer than the cheap old Squier Strat that I first started on back in the day. Any beginner would be very happy with a Harley Benton and probably wouldn't feel the need to immediately replace it once you start getting more into playing.

Hey Justin. For the fan who said he is thinking about starting to play bass, first: dude absolutely do it! Now a few suggestions. I have been playing bass in bar bands around Austin, Texas and now San Antonio Texas for 30+ years. It’s still so much fun that even at the ripe old ago of 61 I keep doing it. On choosing a bass. I played a Peavey T-40 for years when I first started. It was a beast. Very heavy, but… and this is the important parts. 1) it was cheap and 2) the action was pretty good so it didn’t kill my left hand. Look for something in a price range your comfortable with, just pay attention to how hard you have to press the strings to get a good tone. You don’t want to have to work too hard to avoid fret buzzing. Next, learning tab is fine. However if you really get in to it learning a bit of music theory will be helpful. It helps to know what someone means when the say a song is 1,4,5 or goes to the relative minor at the bridge. Totally not necessary but opens up being able to just sit in with bands without really knowing the songs. When I first started I spent a lot of time learning the notes on the neck, learning some theory, etc. the payoff is stuff like recently I sat in for a 45 minute set with a band and had never played most of the songs, but pulled it off just fine because of the work I put in. All that being said the most import thing is to start, pick up a $200 used bass, and figure it out. There are loads of great KZbin videos for playing bass. Tons of covers of songs with bass tabs. Playing bass is the most fun you can have with your clothes on… or off if your Flea.

6:25 I always play You Shook Me All Night Long's intro starting at the 7th fret before moving down, it sounds much better and I'm pretty sure Angus does it that way. As for the D/F# in Highway to Hell, I fret it as an open D, and use my thumb for the F#. Easy!

On the bass question just go for it - I learnt using tab (got the tab for the Beatles and Smiths songs easy enough ) then just played along to the songs to pick it up - also a book on where to find all the chord progressions and scales on different parts of the fret board.. then keep practicing that. Adding more songs to your list..You don’t need an expensive bass. After that go down to a local jam night and ask to play - find someone who knows a song you know - or just play a blues jam with other musicians will give you confidence - even just playing the root notes in time will help develop an ear for the chord changes too.

I know you probably won't see this Question but here it goes anyway. Is there any chance that you could possibly have your Brother Dan on your channel one day? I am a huge fan of The Darkness. I think you are Amazing, but I also feel as though your Brother could quite possibly be one of the best Rock Rythem Guitarists ever.. I would love to hear from him and what he thinks makes a good rhythem guitarist and I would love to see the Interaction between the both of you. I truly believe that with you performing in the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert and with the success of your KZbin Channel, that The Darkness will become a Huge name again.. To create a vocal track, do you do what Jagger calls a vowel movement? Basically vocalizing gibberish, then find lyrics.

I find as I'm doing gibberish key words pop out and I riff off that.

But what I will say, personally...I CANT STAND making words fit after the fact. I really to tend to try and let inspiration just hit and write the lyrics on the fly...I CAN NOT be trying to count syllables and find the words to fit. Feels too contrived at that point.

@@Postmortumaz yes!!! I tend to write key words on a big page and the occasional full line...then when I do a vocal take I just look at the page and go for it. The end of a song called "hail hail hallelujah" used that technique and the entire vocal on innoculate the time used a similar system. once I think too much things get predictable and boring...I like just going for it haha. The Bowie technique was used on several albums of his... As if he needed to 🤣
