@cobraopts7 Not everywhere. In Cali, you can have no tint on the front, 30% in the back. My state is max 70 in the front, 20 in the rest. They actually have a meter that determines tint level to issue tickets. Just look up window tint meter.

in the UK i think the front windows can have 30% tint and from the factory most new cars have 20% already so can't do much and the cops pull plenty for it and fine them, if you get it done to 305 most places give u a company card stating the percentage of your tint for you to give to the cops

Depends where you are in the US. I know Arizona you could have every window but the windshield tinted as dark as you want

In response to your question. In the state of PA, it is a very vague tint law. It states that the interior of the vehicle must be viewable from the windshield and the windows to the left and right of the driver. In the state of NY, your front doors and back doors: no darker than 72% and the rear window, anything is allowed.

WUT !!!... In canada you can tint the back glass, the 2 back side , the front UP TO 30 % incuding the usual 5% factory tint. Front windshield can have anything from top of windshield, 6 inches down(tint or vynil doesnt matter )

@zoomustard its because cars and suv/trucks have differant laws for some reason,and when i got pulled over in my car for tint the cop said exactly what you said,how does he know if somone has a gun pointed at him,so i guess people with suv/trucks dont have guns.

Does anyone realize how much time it took for the cop to explain about the shade of the tint and where it was (on the inside) and the lesson he had to give. I assume that this was already known by the people pulled over for it . I ask who is paying for this cops time while he has to give this lesson..

Another reason i have been informed of is when you have added tint it is a safety issue for the occupants. During impact the window will stay intact and not shatter becoming a large intact piece.

I agree. I just got pulled over for the same thing the other day and got a ticket. I have owned my car for 4 years and never got pulled over. I have passed many cops in that time on the roads. It is a ridiculous law! What the hell...I bought the car from the dealer that way! I thought this was America!

I had 20% Tint on my 98 Maxima from front to back, except for the windshield. My interior was black so at night it looked really dark. I also had some bright blue HID headlights. The lights would draw attention first and then the cop would see the dark tint and before you know it, I'm getting hit with 3 or 4 tickets. I had to take back streets and highways just to avoid the police. My car was always a main attraction on the road. I could of just removed the extras but I loved how it looked.

i've payed the tint guys a few extra bucks to put 5% tint on all my cars and never had any problems. if i get pulled over i just make sure to roll the window down all the way before the cops sees it. and there is an actuall handheld machine that tests your tint for legality but i've only seen one and i think very few cops have them.

If you tint your front windows too dark, cops can't see if you're using cellphone or if you're buckled up or some other things. It does suck when cops pull you over when front windows are being tinted a little bit, which you can still see through

Here in california you cant have the side fronts tinted more than like 10, however theres a loop hole, if the tint is factory tint theres nothing the can do, and its easy to falsify documents or labels to make it look factory

@terminatorgir i agree. one of the reasons i want really dark tint, at least in the back it to keep "my" property away from the prying eyes of criminals. the other is to keep the sun from blinding me in my peripheral vision. its ok if its in front or back but at the side it kills me.

it's like that in almost every state..it's actually 35% tint up front. the percentage is the percent. of light that comes through the tint. 11% is limo tint or what's used in the back of most SUV's/vans, 5% the darkest u can get. 20% is usually used upfront & 5% around the back..Later

My brother had his windows tinted before they made tinting laws in our state, and his were considered too dark after the laws were made. The police told him if he carried his receipt with him showing the date they were tinted, he couldn't be given a ticket. So he did that until he sold the car. Of course, he was occasionally pulled over, which isn't any fun, but wasn't given a ticket.

Regardless of the fact that some cops are cool and some are dicks, they risk their lives. The more at ease they are, the easier it is for you. At night if you get pulled over, shut your ignition off, roll down your driver's side window, turn on the interior light, and keep your hands on the wheel. Once he/she gets to the vehicle then reach for your reg/ins. I always do this, and I've only received one ticket out of the last seven times I've been pulled over. Give respect, and you'll get it back.

@iamgangelo yea, and what if the person always rolls down all of their windows when they are pulled over? that kinda shoots the officer safety issue in the foot. not to mention having tint or any adhesive window film reduces flying glass in an accident significantly. i support tinted windows and say they should just be required to roll them down if pulled over.

IL wouldn't even require a meter. No tint on the front but all other windows allow any %. I'm pro-tint, but still think there should be limits for visibility reasons. Ex: 5% all around is not safe. Any state with 20% or darker in the back and around 30% on the fronts is fair. In no-front states, you can still tint the rest & put clear UV blocking film up front to lower the temp and prevent fading.

it was explained to me when I was cited for it as being a safety concern not just for an officer, but when you approach an intersection at night while driving you might not be able to see a pedestrian in the crosswalk, or a car coming that failed to turn their headlights on. I can see it from both sides and I knew it was not legal when I tinted it so in the end, it was my own fault.

@iamgangelo People on motorcycles tend to be more attentive and cautious drivers and it's much easier to tell if a motorcyclist is paying attention. Vans are fine as long as the driver sits in the drivers seat where there are windows that he can see out and not in the back! I got hit by a car and the driver said she didn't see me. Since them I always make sure people driving cars see me. That's a lot harder if the driver has dark windows, and that's why they are less safe than clear windows.

In oregon EACH cop determines if the tint is tooo much. One will say yes, another will say no. Its BS. There is no clear defined regulation on window tint. So its Officers Discretion

In michigan you can have your back windows and dark as you want, but you can have you front windows tinted at all inless its 4''. my sister got pulled over something like 4 times in a week because of her tint haha, then she finnally took it off cause they were gonna give her a ticket finally. and they said they would check if she took it off.

The few states that actually enforce it... the cops will meter it right there and ticket if it's illegal. If you get a ticket, and it wasn't metered, just have it metered and you can beat the ticket (if it's legal). Also, keep in mind that some states specify NET & some just specify the tint percentage. If it's 30% NET, you can't put 30% film over 7% factory tinted glass. Some states also require the tinter to put a sticker on the car, certifying that the tint is within legal limits.

go check ur eyes even if you don't have any problems and tell the doctor to give you a note for tinted windows..It simply says it's suggested to use tint windows, because it's actually better for your vision(it's like sunglasses) and make sure it's signed. When you get pulled over, tell the popo u have a doctors note & show it to him

Back sometime 4 years ago in '08,I got pulled over by my State's Highway Patrol for having front door tinted windows(No,'cause I was driving a sports car that looks like something out of " the Fast & Furious" movies & this cop wanna check if I had any driving records).The strange thing about it,the tint was a level 2(at 35%) with only 2 more levels to a limo tint & this cop can tell at 10pm at night when he was never on either sides of my car.

I have a right to know if the driver of another vehicle sees me, especially if I'm walking or riding a bicycle. Tinted windows should be illegal everywhere. Safety is always more important than looking cool.

This cop was being very reasonable and took the time to explain the reasoning. Cops probably don't have to explain themselves to drivers like this. They could have gotten a real nasty NYC cop who's in a bad mood, instead of this particular cop who was actually quite friendly about the matter.

Last time i checked (in CALIFORNIA atleast) window tint is ONLY illegal if installed on front DRIVER & PASSENGER windows no matter how dark or light the tint is, you just CANT have it on there! I was stopped for the same thing and the Pig explained to me that it was illegal becasue they are not able to see wether "WE" have our seatbelts on or not. So another way to say "we need something to do!

iirc, for California. Rear have no limit for tint but front is 70%. Well i know that if law is true and cop gives you a ticket anyway, you can fight it because when I come to modding cars, sometime cops don't even check if it actually illegal mod or not. Is all about their judgement. But if you think they're 100% then fight it because you alread have 40% that cop might not show up.

i think that tint laws should be loosened a bit in some states, i get not being able to blackout tint them but i think either 35% or 20% should be legal. it cuts down glare, makes your valuables less of a target, and cuts down emissions in the warmer months. california is actually mandating tint from auto manufacturers as early as 2012 last i heard

Once it's established that police have some sort of "right" to see what you are doing when you are on/in any kind of private property, then our right to privacy of any kind is on the chopping block. Such laws also set the precedent that any of our rights can be removed if it will somehow protect the police. In other words, such laws state that police safety is more important than individual rights.

Actually 20% is what comes stock on the rear widows of suvs and vans. 5% is limo tint. And 0% is the darkest you can get. And I know people that have multiple layers of 5%. So you can really go as dark as you want.

I've never had the police steal my money when I drove a car! I did get a fine for speeding through a small town that has a state highway through it 20 years ago, and, guess what, I didn't ever speed through that town again! If I were a parent in that town with kids that had to cross that highway I'd be pretty happy about the police making sure people slow down. I broke a reasonable law and I paid a penalty for it. I'm not going to be whiny or disgruntled about it!

@iamgangelo It's not an inane code. It's a sensible law. I see people pulling out from stop signs without adequately looking for traffic all the time. Being able to see when people in cars do not see me enables me to cross the street more safely because it lets me know that I need to get some drivers' attention and remind them that I am there before I try to cross. I'm not willing to have my safety compromised for the sake of someone who likes the look of darkened car windows.

I just use that automotive cling-on 5% tint on the sides lol looks just as good as regular tint and don't have to worry about messing it up putting it on. I just have to roll them down before any trooper sees meh lol

@terminatorgir There is no good reason for the driver of a car to be concealed from view. It is much safer for other traffic to know if the driver is actually paying attention to traffic or is lighting a bowl or otherwise distracted. One of the most common excuses uttered by the party at fault in traffic accidents is "I didn't see him". Part of being safe in traffic is making sure other drivers see you, no matter who has the right of way.

Tint laws are stupid. In MN cars can only be 50 all around. Trucks, Vans, SUVs can have their rear passengers and rears pitch black tint. I don't see the point of that reason who they need to see on a certain car. Tint should be about visibility. Heck you can't even see out of new cars nowadays with no tint cuz the butt of the car is as high as trucks hood.

Most people will admit to "wrongdoing" but in reality they should just remain silent. Also, if you have pot in the car, don't allow a search. So the only answer to, "mind if I have a look?" is "I do not consent to any search." Cops are after revenue and arrests, they don't care about your civil rights.

Someone decides to come up i can have my pistol already waiting for them. Night or day it is a deterrent. Not to mention if a car decides to pull up and start shooting its spray and pray.
