Pulling a Fish Wheel Out of the Yukon River - Stan Zuray

Some videos are non stop exciting but this one is to show how to do something very tedious and time consuming yet key to the lifestyle up here. Each year fishwheels are pulled and jacked off the land and put in rivers and the reverse in fall, all to protect them from the ice breakups we have up here in spring. My objective was to give a deeper idea of what is involved in pulling my wheel and so a longer video. You are still looking at just 1/5 the time it took. I suggest some fast forwarding if it gets long watching. This is real life on the river. Thanks for watching. Best from Here, Stan
Also "Carry On: Stan Zuray's Journey from Boston Greaser to Alaskan Homesteader" is now available on Amazon in paperback, eBook, and audiobook. Amazon reviews always appreciated. www.amazon.com/dp/1521098891
Anyone interested in a signed copy has two options:
- Go to: www.thestanproject.com/mercha... and buy a pre signed book (the simplest)
- Buy a book on Amazon and follow these instructions. (Many have done this and it has worked well. Done hundreds and no mail failures yet).
1. Get two 12.5 x 9.5" priority mail flat rate envelopes at post office.
2. Self-address and put postage on one envelope.
3. Address other one to: Stan Zuray, Box 77172, Tanana, Alaska, 99777 and put book and other envelope in it (folded) and signing instructions if any and I'll sign and return.
Please send no money - my privilege to sign but an Amazon review would be appreciated. Flat rate both ways will cost you under $15.

I am just figuring out how to do editing as my daughter Kate has been doing that mostly. The filming of this one was mine and it took 1 1/2 days to upload video on this molasses Satellite dish connection. But at least I got something to communicate with.

I canoed down the Yukon from Whitehorse to the Bering in 1977 and came across many of these wheels along the banks of the river. I often wondered how difficult it must have been to set them in place and to beach them in the fall. Now I know, thanks to this incredible video. These people who live off the land are resourceful, resilient and survive by their wits, dogged determination and hard work. People like Stan have my greatest respect!!

We purchased a small lot on the Kenai River on Dow island. Only accessible by boat in warm weather and when the slew and river are frozen in winter. Building on frozen ground is not going to be fun. The light went completely on for me after watching this and I will be building a small trailerable portable barge now that I can use for hauling a 4 wheeler, lumber, roofing, and all of my other gear & materials during warm months to and from the lot now thanks to you! I will be barging on a much smaller scale obviously vs moving your 12 ton fish wheel thats for sure. Also good to know that 50hp will be WAY MORE power needed to do my job. We need to figure out a way to start getting you paid for being a "Bush Consultant" Stan!! Your everyday life, what you do every day, and how to do it is invaluable information and I have the utmost respect and admiration for you. May God continue to Bless and keep you and your family! Thank you agin, I will watch anything that you want to publish!

Stan Zuray/ hello from South Carolina Stan. I've been watching the show since the beginning and have seen all the episodes. I think it's great but what I wanted to say, you're a super Dad to your children. I watched your son and daughter grow up basically on the show, and they've turned into fine young adults. Good job sir, congratulations! On another note, you're the best MacGyver I've ever witnessed. It's always neat to see your thought process on how to get things done with what's on hand. Thanks again for your time and enjoy the fall and winter. Good hunting sir!

Took me almost exactly 20 years to talk mine into it. We are leaving at the end of this month for the Kenai Peninsula. No where near as cold ;).Fly into ANC in mid May and spend a week. Book all of your hotels well in advance. All of the hotels and "tourist stuff" is still very cheap. Rent a car, go to Walmart, get cheap cooler and grill, drive 2 to 3 hours in EVERY direction from ANC where you have booked a room. She will fall in love with it. Further south from Anchorage you go the warmer it gets.

About once a year I fall in. The danger really is before you get in the water and hitting your head or body on the logs before you go in. It is an easy swim to shore if not hurt and if you have a life vest on. The silty water drags you down more.

I’d hate to see the river in full flow as judged by your Swim beach! Looks like the river could be what 60 or 80 feet deep during flood stage?
