I remember when my house was getting a rewire probably around about the same size as this house. Well on the day of the rewire 10 guys showed up and had the house done in just over 6 hours excluding lunch but to see how this is being done is amazing

Last time I did a rewire was about 50 years ago and it is interesting how it has all changed. When we wired the loft we always clipped to the side of joists rather than across the tops. It prevented crush damage or possible trip hazard but I guess allowed for now due to the fact that access is very limited. I like the way you drilled through the joists rather than cut those slots, we always drilled the joists. I was puzzled by the lack of cables at the ceiling points, we used to go switch to switch for supply with a switched run up to the light fitting. But that was with single conductors through conduit, with twin and earth it was rose to rose with one switch cable (1mm) for the wall switch. Of course the roses had terminal blocks for all the cables so maybe you fit a junction box in the ceiling under the upstairs floor and feed one cable through for the fitting? Love watching your videos and learning a bit about the new fittings, practices etc.

100% 6mm for any cooker feed, but shower feed I always put 10mm in, some of the new ones are ridiculously powerful. Been to too many burnt cables because a plumber has been round and whacked a 10kW shower on an old 6mm feed. Just not worth it anymore.

azznoble Have a watch of JW about cooker feeds where he explains about why cookers only need to be 4mm, I agree with you about showers as the future equipment is out of our control at install time

Myhippocampus I’m aware that 4mm can be used, but if memory serves me well it’s only when the cable is clipped in free air? There’s no guarantee that after I first fix a new build that the insulation bodgers aren’t going to cover my cables, therefore I think it’s wiser to put 6mm feeds in for the sake of a few quid extra.

6mm for cooker unless you can guarantee me the cable won't be exposed to insulation or excess heat which you can't ever in the real world. Also some new freestanding ovens have induction hob rings and the 2kw+ for oven element. Why put 4mm in for a few £ saving when any customer would not care if you explain it

Hi Nick, not sure if you and your Apprentice still run cables in the loft the same way but If you clip to the side of the beams in the loft it means the Customer at a later date can easily board their loft space without risking damaging cables

Always look at the appliance information sticker which will tell you the wattage is then you can work out what cable you need simple

Nick: Have you never installed a 4 milli 32A radial for sockets? Back in the day when the DNOs used to house bash, they put 4 milli in for showers but TBF, they were only 6- 7kW back then. I wired my Mum's shower back in 1986 and put 10 milli in so it would be future-proofed.

Why not start with loft light and leave cable long just wago a flex>plug to the end while fitting up, then take plug off and wire in permanent? Also don't shy of cable basket in loft or garage like TomN has ;) can be cheaper than fire rated fixing etc. To cover hole bit of Plasterboard might be neat? 100% 6mm go big or go home :)

insulation,... learnt that a cool shower after a day of working in an old insulated loft is better than a hot shower. the pores in the skin stay closed hence washing off the insulation, then finish off with a hot shower, just a tip from an old guy years ago. works too....

Cable tray stood off on Unistrut for the run in the garage, that way the gas pipe can be underneath is safely.

Not too many options getting the cabling from the landing to the garage. Trouble with running in that cavity is you have polystyrene insulation in there. That presents the little problem of migration.

If people are putting 4mm twin and earth in for cookers and showers need a slap. 6-10mm twin for cooker 10mm for shower. I've had to fit 16mm twin and earth for a shower once before as it ran under insulation in a bungalow just stuck it on a contactor.

@@electricery always over compensate or fit the cable for the maximum rating of the cooker yes you can take diversity onto account but what about Christmas day or occasions where every element on the cooker is at full power 4mm wouldnt ever take that load for a standard free standing cookers where they are rated at 10kw total.

Agreed. I've always ran 6/10mm for cookers and 10mm for showers. I appreciate the diversity calc for cookers but for for the sake of a few quid just go 6mm IMO. I can see an issue when people are recommending 4mm for cookers and an apprentice thinks oh right I'll stick with 4mm on all cooker supplies and then drops a major bollock with not understanding where and when it can be done.

I don't know if it's different in your country but that wire looks like UF-B which in America we use for underground feed. For houses and building we use NM. Is that wire the American equivalent of NM or UF-B?

Doing a re wire and it's laminate everywhere. Wired feeds round switches and joining the neutrals in the back of the boxes. It's obviously alot more cable but easier if there's ever any alterations to switches or new lights getting added in etc. Would you do this

Hi does anyone know if there’s anything wrong with fitting sockets to skirting boards? The nic electrician just left a list of remedials needed on the back of an envelope( no codings) there 12 “ skirtings so there’s 9” below the socket. Don’t see the problem on an ecr. It’s an old terraced property. Excellent videos thanks.

Only on a New build is the requirement for certain heights of socket & light switches. No problem with remedial work on old properties.

The main problem would be a socket too close to the floor not allowing a suitable bend from a cable exiting the bottom of a plug. Was probably OK on older round pin sockets and plugs (really old ones had axial cable exits) but the larger 13A socket (plus new carpet and underlay) may make the gap too small on a narrow skirting board. Not a problem in your case. Plus any modern socket (even the old 1960s MK surface mounts) will have a fireproof backing.
