Why do you use smaller boxes on top than the ones on bottom?

The larger boxes on the bottom (called deeps) are where the queen lays her eggs. The smaller boxes (called supers) are where the bees store the honey. There is a queen excluder that goes between the different boxes that prevents the queen from laying eggs in the supers. Generally, the supers are lighter and easier to move around when they are full of honey.
