The Significant of Log Drum :-
According to tradition, once upon a time, it is believed that the Nagas were living near ocean. Though they went farther from the ocean, the ships and boats in their memory became a legend to them. In order to preserve this sweet memory they made object like log drum by huge tree. They kept this in their villages. This is one of the biggest log drum use by the Nagas. Since, it was never moved out of the same place, and it looked very particular; out of curiosity perhaps they hit it with stick or stones which gave sound like tong…tong…ting…ting… it is because of this peculiar sound, it was name “Sham” or Lan-niyang sham” and people call it by that name even today. Sham or lan-nyiang shem is Phom name which denotes the sound of the log drum, the log drum which gives a loud and distinctive sound. The Morung of Bang plays a major role in making log drum.
The first step is selection of a good log at least about 38ft long, 14-15 ft girth and its tail 5 to 6 ft. the circumference if the log drum depend upon the size of the tree. The trunk of the tree i.e. the log drum is divided into three major parts namely the head, the body, and the tail.
The expert artisans are then engaged in designing the head portion. Because it is the most difficult task of the artisans needing careful decision.
There is special task force who engage in black smithy work for repairing of dao, axe, hoes, etc. they supply requires tools and implementing to the workers.
The adult male members of the Morung or Bang in the village do all the physical works, while the womenfolk prepare food and rice beer for the men who are engaged in heavy work. The younger male members supply food and drink to the workers.
All the workers are engaged in different tasks. They stay in the jungle till the work is finally completed.

Both men and women put on their traditional dresses and they sing, dance and shout; while pulling the log drum together. Its looks like a multitude of ants carrying a death earthworm to their home for food. Thus, the use of log drum is found to be a common practice among the Naga tribes.
