PULLING SEINE ON MAYARO BEACH - Traditional Fishing In Trinidad & Tobago, Caribbean DRONE FOOTAGE
#netfishing #traditionalfishing #caribbean
A couple weeks ago I was in the right place at the right time to witness one of the most amazing fishing techniques here in the Caribbean. It's what we call "pulling seine".
Spending the weekend at Mayaro Beach with the family, the beach was inundated with seaweed making fishing and swimming tough. Luckily enough the fishermen of the area spotted some fish and set off to drop their nets. Talk about luck!
I was able to capture some of the action on drone, but it is a long process and the drone died just as the net came up! Clicked on my GoPro and recorded the whole chaos that happened after...It was definitely a scene to witness! If you have never experienced this first hand, at least you can get a taste through this video! Truly an experience!
Hope you guys enjoyed watching! Please share with anyone you think might enjoy! Fish On!

I have never seen such destruction of our fisheries like this…literally hundreds of undersized fish…thousands of bait fish and sting rays just layed to waste as these morons step all over them…well done TnT…thanks for showing the world that you have no idea how to sustain your fisheries…I swear I don’t want to hear a single fisherman in Trini complain about not catching anything…if this is the situation pulling sein you can just imagine the level of destruction those unregulated trawlers create…well yes fadda!! Smfh 🙄

I totally agree. Not one person thinking about conservation, only to pack fish in their pockets and barrels. This video literally hurt me to the core.

I love the interaction you had with the youths instead of just trying to run them off that was real humble of you, keep it up. I know this is what the village knows in terms of fishing for years now, no doubt pulling seine damages the seabed and kills alot of smaller fishes unnecessarily, nice coverage of the action keep it up.
@KoSMTT

Of course...Them youths was reall vibes man...It is the traditional way of fishing for years...But it causes alot of damage and the by-catch is really sad to see...Hopefully in the not too distant future the method can be adapted to make it less damaging...Glad you enjoyed the footage!

This has always been a way of life in T&T and as time pass our waters get more barren....Thousands of dead small fish ...makes things even more tuff for inshore fishing.
@KoSMTT
@KoSMTT 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it has been like this for decades...But it is very damaging...We need to have some changes made to sustain the fishery...But when...It is their way of making a living...

KoS. The seine is one of the reasons why fish stocks in Mayaro have been depleted . I was born, and grew up there. I am now 66 years old. For over a hundred years seines have been straining the waters of Mayaro, destroying everything caught. At one time I could recall there were about six seines in service. Cham, Lee Ha , Borel, Nathan, DeGannes are some of the names I remember. There were never Government input to regulate the size of the mesh, nor were they regulated as to how many times a day the seine could be thrown. Aside from destroying the seabed, everything is killed. I remember one afternoon a school of over 500 stingrays were netted, They just hauled them up on the beach and let them die there, and be corbeaux food ! We children would go behind the curved seine, as it was being hauled up on the beach. Small fish by the millions would escape through the mesh and try to escape back to the sea, passing through our legs !! As a boy, fish used to be caught by the TRUCKLOADS.....not pickuploads ! Four, five, six truckloads of Cavalli, Carite and Ancho when in season. They used to describe it as "Seine Tombay", in those circumstances. The smell of frying fish used to pervade the air for that afternoon. Fish like Herrings, Cro-cro, Sapatay, Cutlassfish, Catfish, Bannan, and others used to be left by the basketfuls for corbeaux to eat. No one wanted them !.......Today people are eating Crappofish !! I am really surprised from your video that that amount of fish is still being caught in a seine in Mayaro.......despite the Sargasso weed ! Many Third world countries still use seines, as I have seen on KZbin. And the catch is far worse than in Mayaro. I see you were doing your part. Thanks for the video.

Wow...That is an amazing recollection you have described there...I can only imagine witnessing the seine those days...Amazing! Seeing those quantity of catches and the size and types of fishes...We can only dream of those days now...It is indeed sad to see the level of by-catch still happening...The mesh size and frequency is definitely things that need to be regulated! Hopefully one day, the gov't will realise the importance of sustainability and put things in place. Thank you for your recollection...At least I have an idea of how things use to be! Glad you still enjoyed the video!

A true account of land seine. I'm 74 and I went to Mayaro RC in St Ann's Road and when the conch horn blow the school became virtually empty. All of us gone for fish to take home and then back to school. Those were the days.

Seine fishing depletes the ocean to some extent. So many juvenile fish going to waste. What a pity.I was so happy seeing you throw back fish and stingray in the sea.. Yes indeed it can be a destructive type of fishing...Especially with soo much by catch. Hopefully it the not too distant future, it can be somewhat regulated. It is always a great experience to see it happening in front of you! Good times!

Nice to see you putting effort into saving whatever rays and by-catch you find, one of the few times I was ever there to see this when I was much smaller, about 9 or 10 I’d say, me and a friend took it upon ourselves to carry as many cownose rays that were left up on the beach to die back into the water, from what I remember there were atleast 20 of them with the only casualties being one plus a small eagle ray we were too late for, glad to see the big guy back in the water by the end tho (pretty sure it’s a Caribbean whiptail if I remember right)

I hope KZbin influencers like KoS, Brett in Trini and Stifler who post vids out of Tobago use their channels to not only promote fishing content, but conservation as well…in TnT we have a sad history of destroying everything so please KZbinrs use your platform’s wisely…I watch everything you all post and enjoy your content…but edify the masses on the importance of preserving our local fisheries for future generations to come…talk about how long it may take a particular fish species to grow, maybe a minimum size to throw back and why…it’s super important so folks who watch your channel can understand as well…

Yes Sir....If you have been watching my channel for a while now...You would know that I fully promote sustainable fishing and always try to educate the public on the importance of catch and release for certain species...It has always been one of my main goals to spread awareness and knowledge to practice sustainability to ensure our fisheries remain in good order for a long time to come! I will continue working to ensure that I play my part!

This is one video showing the devastating effects that these fishermen have on the fish population. Imagine the decades of destruction. That is why in Trinidad you can throw a line and never catch a fish.

this video shows why the fish stocks have depleted there. Uneducated greedy and dont know how to keep the resource thriving. all those juvenile fish died for very few adult fish. wonder why few adult? because you killed the bait stock and you killed the juvenile game fish in your greed. I feel sorry for you all. god bless

there are ways to net fish that reduces the bycatch significantly with bellows tubes to channel them away..

Not gonna be a Greta...but if this madness continues among other indiscriminate methods; our fisheries already strained will be doomed. I can see your efforts to assist the trapped fish and perhaps in a way it's good for people to see what goes on and why.

@@KoSMTT I prefer what toy did by sharing this video so that we can all see what's happening every day. This however is a mare drop in the bucket as opposed to our utterly uncontrolled fisheries. There are things happening right here in and around our waters you will not believe. If I had some proper coin I would personally turn around the fisheries for good. But I don't have that pull nor coin. It's soooooo easy to do eh, but there must be a desire.

It was indeed heartbreaking to see all of the bycatch....It is the traditional way of fishing and means of living for many...But I really believe it can be adapted to ease of the loss and damage to the eco-system...It has to be sustained for those to come...

@@KoSMTT Indeed bro, seen it w my own eyes. Another misfortune is all that sargasso weed, once they have so much of that in the net there's no way for all that bycatch to escape a larger seine. Put out some surf rods w chicken rigs. Use shrimp for bait, bet you could get on some of those sea trout/ salmon. I'll be blowing that beach up with some surf rods. Respects
