Running the chain over a wheel/tyre so the pull is upwards would likely work better

on youtube you can find a video of a pastor (or something) asking a very simple but relevant question: "Why? WHy?? WHY????¿¿¿¿?????? WHHHHHHYYYYYY¿?¿?¿?¿?" I just say this not because i do not understand what you are saying, but because i can't believe someone else beat me to it, leaving a comment like the one you left. Ah well, Geniuses think alike, they say.

Yeah, I struggle to see why that's much better than just wrapping a chain around the tree a few times.

Like others have said, you want to leave the trunk cut higher, and put the grubber as high up as you can get. Longer lever arm = more bending moment = more torque to twist the roots out of the ground. Sorry you bent it, just means you need to upgrade to the next bigger grubber!

I would have added weight in bucket and used the 3 point lift and hooked the chain onto blade and shortened the chain length. But that was a larger tough stump for the sized tractor! Thanks great content!!!

Brock, I think that was an unfair test as the Brush Grubber was not used properly. I own one (that same model/size) and works just fine for us on our farm here in Maine. You were trying to pull the stumps along the same plane as the ground, essentially 90 degrees to the stump. This provides an incredible amount of resistance. We pull stumps with our Brush Grubber by lifting the stump vertically, using a chain hooked on our loader bucket. Raising the loader bucket pops the stumps out quite easily with hardly any effort and I've been pulling stumps upwards of 4" diameter. Try using Brush Grubber in that manner and you'll see how easy and well it works. By the way, my tractor is a 1998 vintage, New Holland 1725 compact (29hp) that has seen better days. I did a video on my channel about a year ago showing the Brush Grubber in use with our tractor. It's a pain in the butt if you are using it by yourself because you constantly have to get on and off the tractor when trying to rip out a large number of saplings (I just pull out the entire sapling without cutting them first). The Brush Grubber works best when there is a second person to attach the unit to the stump or sapling while the other person operates the tractor. I think it's a great value for the price. 👍👍👍

I have one and it actually worked well with a 100 hp tractor. We always placed the spring down, pulled slowly and only have had a few trees slip through the grip. It is quicker and more consistent than wrapping a chain around the tree in my experience.

Nice concept on paper. I would think a couple of pointy ends, like tongs, might be a better design, so they can actually dig into the meat of the stump. Think I'll stick with my chain and or backhoe. Thanks for bringing us all along.
@garycox7508
@garycox7508 Жыл бұрын
pointy ends would dig more, but then you'd have a smaller area in the stump supporting the force which would tend to create an incredibly effective log splitter. The spiked pads distributed the force across a relatively large area of grain which helps keep the stump from splitting apart when you pull. If you were pulling vertically (and thus with the grain), then the spike would probably be ok since there is so much more strength in that direction versus cross-grain. I've used the brush grubbers quite a bit in clearing my property and there is some very subtle design genius to the product that you start to appreciate when you see it both succeed and fail (due to poor placement of the tool, using the wrong size grubber, or rotted wood). As for chain and backhoe..yep those work too for sure! The grubber shines when you have a stump that's too short to get a chain wrapped on..and it's typically faster than a backhoe. I use all 3 types of tools (grubber, chain, backhoe) depending on the particular stump to optimize my time and energy given I have a small tractor (2025R) and it needs all the help it can get :)

Howdy Brock! I have the smaller size Brush Grubber and it works great for what I use it on. So far it has held up pretty good, but I don't use it on stuff much bigger than an inch in diameter. My 25hp sub-compact can pull about 80% of my stuff out but on occasion I have had to use the truck - mainly due to traction. Good review - thanks for sharing 🤠

I have the same experience as you. The Brush Grubber peels the bark off. Subsequent attempts won't hold the slippery bare wood. I've tried their choker chain with a bit more success. I have not found a method with 100% success rate yet. However, I have approximately 95% success with 3/8" grade 70 chain using a unique "knot". I wrap the chain once around the trunk/brush. Cross free end 1 over free end 2. Pass free end 1 under free end 2. Wrap free end 1 around trunk/brush again. Hook free end 1 onto free end 2 close to the trunk/brush (assuming you have clevis grab hooks not slide hooks), Hook free end 2 to pulling device (tractor, truck, skid steer, winch, etc.). This creates a Chinese Finger Cuffs situation. It works the best of all methods I've tried.

I have that same model and it works great. It's definitely much more efficient if you have two people - one on the tractor and one to hook/unhook the stumps. Get an old car/truck wheel (without a tire) and place it next to the stump. Run the chain over the top of the wheel so when you're pulling, the stump is coming up and out. That gives you more pulling power and is better than using your bucket to try and pull.

I have 2 brush grubbers (different sizes) and the spiked choker chain thing they sell. It's critically important to use the right size grubber to match with the stump you are pulling. If you use a too-big grubber, it doesn't grip properly and is apt to slip off. Too small and you are apt to break the thing if you have enough tractor. When using the "right" one, those things work great in my experience. It also helps to kind of pound the spikes in a little before you hook up to the tractor to give it a head start in establishing grip. I've pulled about 30 stumps (of about the size you showed on the video) with them (with a 2025R). You're right, on the little tractors, traction is key so I pull with my heavy hitch (full of about 800lbs of suitcase weights) from its integrated grab hook. The weight plus the slightly elevated angle of pulling puts a ton of force down on the rear tires which helps a bunch. As far as breaking the grubber, that's likely due to the weird shaped bunch/cluster of stumps you pulled which creates corresponding weird side forces on the clamps. Also, that might have been a good candidate for the next step-up in size of the grubber. In addition, the company sells a spiked choker chain for stuff like that (irregular stumps made up of a clump of plants grown together) which eliminates that issue altogether.

Have had 1 for 8 years and it works great on honeysuckle bushes up to 3” in diameter. Works easier if you leave the trunk up about 2-3’ and hook it higher.

I noticed these before and wondered if they work well. After these trials, it seems like a lot of work to get these tiny stumps out of the ground. These seems to keep on slipping off the stumps once the bark was gone. Since I already have a backhoe on my 1025r, I will keep using it. these small stumps only take a few seconds to get out with the backhoe.

the instructions say: place the brush grubber near the top of the stump. It seems when you pull, the trunk above the grubber squeezes the grubber and twists it. so near the top so the grubber can pass the trunk.

@jeremyj612

Yep. Like you said it’s neat but it doesn’t give you anything you can’t do a few other ways. Chaining to the bucket works well too because you can change angles and move back and forth without dropping tension.
@wilburfinnigan2142

The design comes from what they call a pallet puller. you have a long trailer loaded with pallets and to move them back to get the forks under you have to pull them and it was developed to grab the center board on the pallett to pull them back, they work good most of the tie also !!

I think it bent because the stump wasn't uniformly round. It looked twisted. When the bark slipped, it made the jaws slide in opposite directions. It still takes a lot of power to do that! With my 3046, I just do a double wrap with a half-inch chain around the stump and pull. The harder you pull, the tighter the chain gets. It seems to work best if I leave the stump about two feet high and hook the chain just far enough from the top to keep the chain from coming off before it can get a good bite. Nothing works perfect under all conditions, and sometimes we have to compromise...like by digging! Where there's a will there's a way! Never take "no" for an answer, especially from a stump! Nothing better than a big stump to give a man a reason for a bigger tractor. That is, if you need a reason. If all this stuff was easy, we'd all be bored and take up knitting. Great video, though. I can always count on you.

They are good if you don't cut the tree off so short. I have the larger one that will open for a 6 inch tree. I pulled a 30 ft shadow rooted tree with a 37 hp kubota. The key is to clamp on higher and i ran the chain under the box blade to keep the ftont tires on the ground. The ground was soft and wet it came right out. I also have the same size as you were using and haven't had any problem with them braking. I always attach them to the tree with the jaws bitting into the tree over half way around the tree and the brush grubber truned parallel to the ground. Always clean the bark or ripped up tree out of the spikes so it can get a good bit.

I didn't watch the whole video, but the pull that bent the grubber I could see it was headed for trouble because the pull direction wasn't the same as the orientation of the grubber. If it isn't pulled directly on axis it puts stresses that the tool isn't designed to resist.

guys, i saw this video the other day of a guy using a car tire. He put it infront of the stump, upright ofcourse. Then a rope hanging over the tire, fastened to the stump and the other side to a car or what ever. When you pull, the tire will act as a lever and so the stump will be pulled out vertically. And it seemed to work very nice. Have you guys ever tried that?
